Well I didn't think of the fact that both the DSi and GBA use the ARM7 processor, so I guess GBA hardware is intact. My goof on that one. Then I can't see why GBA games won't be a part of a DSi Virtual Console if one is in the works.

It's important to remember that backwards compatibility with the GBA was a happy accident of how they designed the DS hardware rather than an explicit attempt to make the system backwards compatible. They needed a secondary processor (the current design team seem to love installing those things for sound processing, input, and what-not), they were looking at ARM, and they needed an expansion port. Add 2+2 and it made sense to go ahead and make the expansion port a GBA slot. That also helped determine the size and speed of the secondary chip.

Since that's core DS hardware, there's no way that any system backwards compatible with the NDS will be unable to run GBA games. Even though Nintendo removed the expansion slot, the rest of the hardware must remain.

Isn't GBA part of Nintendo's '3 pillar strategy' or something? Might this explain why they wouldn't want to convert GBA games for VC download?

They abandoned that fast. That was Nintendo's not-so-subtle way of saying, "Ohgodohgod, I hope the DS doesn't fail horribly." So if it did bomb, they could still go on with the GBA, but the GBA was only supported for another year, I think, after the DS. One pillar has certainly been retired by now.

I wouldn't trust what the rep said as absolute fact under ANY circumstances. Do you honestly think that Nintendo keeps their in-store reps up to date on this stuff? I don't.

I still believe that Nintendo would break stupid records by not having a DSi VC. It's just a matter of time until something gets announced.

This. I work at a gamestop, and I have to say reps are not always that informed. I've known about stuff that our reps didn't know yet, just because I actively follow gaming news web sites. I'm sure the reps have been told to try and quell rumors at the moment.

The DSi does not have completely the same GBA hardware inside since it's one large processor now, but the processor is just at the threshold (4x as fast) to be able to do emulation, which is what a VC would be. I have heardd rumors that the ARM11 processor in the DSi has some of the other components of the gba as well.

Hang on. Wasn;t there an announcement that GBA games WOULD be made downloadable some time ago before the DSi was released? Wasn't it on this site in fact?

"They say video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock n' roll."

Stuffgamer1

@LEGEND MARIOID: Yes, but it turned out to be unproven rumor, supposedly sparked by Nintendo reps at some (but not all) of the Club Nintendo Platinum Members DSi preview events. That doesn't mean it's untrue, just that they weren't SUPPOSED to be talking about it at that time.

EDIT: @Zerokku: I work at Gamestop also, actually. That was part of the basis for my statement that you quoted. Not that I've had all THAT much experience dealing with our Nintendo rep (I've only seen her once, I think...), but it becomes pretty clear around there that people are REALLY good at not telling their peons what's up. And why would they? They want to AVOID those kinds of leaks of information!

Never believe a Nintendo Rep they have NDA's an never reveal any News (still remeber the News of Iwata who said there won't be any video stream service on Wii) he said that Nintendo doesn't need this because the are a game Manifacturer and wii is made for gaming and what do we have now(Wii noma) so never believe anything until its revealed on a PR News.

and by the way still remeber that interview with Reggie from an American Newspaper(NY Times) with an error(Downloadable games for DS) Reggie said he meaned Demos but now we know it was DSi ware and wasn't an error he accidentaly revealed News for the future.

The only GBA Games I liked were Pokemon, R/S/E and LeafGreen, so I don't care!

Plus I'm gonna keep my DS Lite, in case I wanna play GBA games.

@ thewiirocks - Yep, that's 100% right. As I said, I wasn't thinking when I posted that comment. I just can't see any way that Nintendo won't milk a DSi Virtual Console when you have that type of back catalog of games at you disposal and can make money on every one of them again with little to no risk involved.

I'm positive we'll get a DSi VC announcement. Positive.

In fact, if there is no DSi VC by this time next year, I hereby give the mods permission to change my forum name to Chicken Foolish.

Well, I actually think we will see the VC added, but I still give you permission to change his name either way. Thanks.

Yeah, well, I reckon Nintendo will declare a fully 3D Pokemon game, and if I'm wrong I'll change my name to something ridiculous...

I, Oh...

That's pretty catchy, "I, Oh..." You should definitely change it.

Spmething Ridiculous could work.

I rule when it comes to games. So deal with it.

Slapshot

If the Big N doesn't drop a DSiVC they are absolutely dumb and have way to much money. There are a ton of great games on the GBA.... so many underestimated games such as Shantae and M&L:Superstar Saga. I have a large collection of GBA titles but missed both of these and was about to purchase them recently but bought my DSi and am now waiting for the inevitable release for download wich will prob be alot cheaper and on a much larger screen. So heres hoping it comes very very soon.

There will be a handheld virtual console, it's just a matter of when.

Right now it's not really necessary so there's no reason for Nintendo to bring it out right now.

They might even wait until their next handheld.

AlexSays

Adam

Supposedly the DSi has the GBA hardware inside of it. If so, I see no reason why they'd wait until the next handheld, but this is just going off of what other forum members have said.

Considering that Nintendo loves selling the same games over and over again, I'd be surprised if there's no DSi VC by the end of the year.

In fact I bet we'll see it at E3.
