@Arkaein Thanks for taking the time to respond to questions about your excellently designed game. I am currently stuck on Sky Defender (Mission 5, I think?). I can't even get past the little drones and ships that peg the big ships you're protecting at the beginning of the mission. Any strategies?
(Also, a suggestion for your future games: You may not want to make the R and L buttons mandatory, as they seem to break very easily.)

The drones will hover and attack your convoy as long as you keep your distance, but flee to a new position if you get too close. The best strategy is to try to sneak up to them by lowering your throttle and staying just far enough away that they stay relatively still.

As far as not using the L and R buttons, I'm not sure how doable that would be for Thorium Wars type game. At a minimum we need a shooting button as well as two throttle buttons, but once camera and turret controls are added there simply aren't enough buttons available to avoid L and R completely.

And that has something to do with this thread?

Nah, I got to the Asteroids mission -- level 11, I believe -- tried it out a dozen or two times and gave up. It's the worst feeling to get to the border of beating the game but not being able to see the ending.

I'll probably try it out again with Arkaein's advice sometime in the future, but right now I'm busy with a few other DSiWare games.

I don't have the game, but what part of it are you stuck at NintenDude97?

For dealing with the asteroids in Mission 11, the best strategy is to stay out as far in front of your convoy as possible. It only takes a few shots to deflect asteroids when they are far away from the ships compared to many shots once they get close. If you start falling behind it's better to let a few asteroids slip through while staying far ahead than to let yourself far behind where you are forced to take on asteroids close to the convoy. Also be sure to hit the asteroids as much from the side as possible instead of head on, as this maximizes the amount of deflection.

The mine field is pretty similar to the asteroids, and as with the asteroids you want to stay pretty far out in front of the convoy. However, there are a couple key differences.

First, you can approach the mines head on, since you are trying to destroy them and not deflect them. Second, controlling your speed is very important. You want to speed up to get to the next mine quickly, but then as soon as you get close to shooting range start slowing down so you can keep a safe distance from the mine when it explodes.

A big key, as with the asteroids, is a willingness to let a few mines go so that you don't fall too far behind and get forced into playing catchup. You aren't going to be able to stop every mine, so letting one go once in a while will let you keep attacking mines far from the convoy where they can't cause any damage.

@Arkaein The game is really good, and i already know that you gave advice for mission 10, but im stil stuck, and i did everything you said, and it all worked, but when i then went to the 2 stingray things, they killed me, i did kill one but then the other killed me, and this keeps on happening, its mostly because i don't have much heath once all the previous stuff happened, also before you said that you can stil take cover even when the platform falls, but how.

@superdooper153 You can take cover using fallen platforms by staying very close to the edge of the platform on the side nearest the edge of the lake. A few shots may get to you but for the most part you will be protected. By being patient, letting the fighters fly over and then backing away from the platform just far enough to take a few shots you can inflict damage without taking it yourself.

Other than that there aren't many more tips for that section. If you haven't been using it, try the circle strafe technique for attacking the stingrays (turret turned to side, going forward full throttle while turning to keep stingrays in crosshairs). This is generally the best way to destroy them without taking too much damage yourself, as the stingrays will have a hard time hitting a moving and turning target. You can dodge there shots even more by varying your speed with this technique, but it takes practice and makes it harder to hit your own shots.

Thanks. Stuck on this mission with the asteroids coming from Saturn. Lost like three times and gave up. I'll try to put these suggestions into practice. Thanks.

Thorium Wars was the biggest waste of money I've ever made on DSiWare, let alone my DS in general.

Terrible representation of what a 10-dollar game should be. 10 dollars will get you GTA: Chinatown Wars on the iPhone App Store, for crying out loud!

I beat Missions 11 and 12 yesterday and its an amazing game! However, the section with the moving floors and gaps on the floor in mission 12 took me quite awhile to get past. Everytime I destroyed all of the droids, I would go towards the exit a bit too early and fall into the pit. I did this about 3 times and it really pissed me off. So, if Big John Games ever creates a sequel (Since the ending vaguely hints at one), a slightly dampened difficulty would be great. Otherwise a great game thats well worth the ten bucks. The ending was epic, too, and was worth the hard work. Looking forward to any other Big John titles coming to DSiWare or WiiWare!

@Arkaein I have finally beat that mission, also for the asteroid part of mission 11, i keep on losing, how long is it to beat that part of the mission, because if i know it makes me feel like i can do it, its kinda hard though because when the asteroids do a direct hit, it takes away 20% of the ship's health.

If they make a more polished version (or sequel) for Wiiware, I may be interested.

I don't remember the exact amount of time off hand, but I think it's close to 4 minutes to get through the asteroid section..
