Honestly, now that that's been brought up, I also expect that there's something else/a few more things that the 3DS will either surprise or impress us with.
Real guess: I just thought of something since its supposed to have the graphic power of GameCube, if not...better. How about the ability to play GameCube games on it? Would love to take Paper Mario 2 and Pikmin 2 along with me everywhere I go. (oh, and the Wind Waker too)

That'd actually be really awesome. And probably not impossible either.
The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.
No, it won't play GCN games for sure. Disc-based media is out for Nintendo's portables since spinning the disc and operating a laser uses a heck of a lot of battery life, not to mention it involves moving parts which can wear down over time and are affected by bumps and movement.
I'm sure Nintendo has some good ideas for it. They've never ceased to pleasantly surprise this last generation.
The only thing I could think of is a portable virtual console that has NES, SNES, GameBoy, and N64 games.

I'm sure they could work around it then, like if you had registered your GameCube games and Nintendo approves that online and stuff they would allow you to download it like a VC....or it will just turn out to be a VC download, knowing them.

Or have a channel on the Wii, that transfers the game to the 3DS. I would happily sit at a charger to play TTYD, WW, SF: Assult in my hands. Even let us transfer N64 games.

B-but WiiWare and current VC titles already take long enough to transfer from SD card to internal memory! Imagine the time it would take to transfer a whole GCN game over wireless to a handheld! The handheld might run out of battery life before it finishes! Madness!
Well we'll see. If Nintendo finds some practical way to do it then I totally welcome GCN games on VC on the 3DS.
