Topic: The Official Demise of the Top 20 Lists

As many of you may have noticed, we're no longer going to be putting up the Top 20 lists anymore. Due to the free WiiWare demos being released as their own separate entities on the Wii Shop Channel, we can't see any reason to continue the Top 20 WiiWare releases. And since the DSiWare also has two free apps already with more to come, we thought it might be time to do away with it as well.

We did want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who posted the other various region Top 20s each week and everyone else who regularly chimed in on the Top 20 comments. We had a good run.

I think they should be continued.
Perhaps just ignore the free demos?

In related news, instead of working on the Top 20 lists, Corbie will be writing full-length reviews of each demo to arrive on the service.

And this just in! Chicken will continue reviewing the same high-quality games as always. Probably even more so now.

Yeah, tomorrow there will be 2 new demos in EU which brings the total to 5 for both regions. And that's 1/4 of the top 20 list...

I am overcome with sadness. I remember watching the charts each week just waiting and cheering for Pong Toss to finally drop off the Top 20 list. Wednesdays will never be the same

That's kind of a bummer actually. I understand WiiWare, but DSiWare only has 2 free games, so that's still 18 games of information. It's pretty easy to check, but I'd rather have it in an easier-to-check location that has past weeks for reference. Oh well.

Dang, I always loved Cheering For good games and booing the cheap mario apps.

It's a shame. I always loved watching and making the lists. Let's pray that Nintendo soon decide to remove the demo's from the list.

Darn. I thought they were just late this week. I never thought there would be a demise.

Can't someone else (i.e not a staff member) continue to do the charts on the forums if they haven't already?

I would love that, the only problem is that the top 3 of the top 20 are demo's in Holland and two demo's are on there way. So then it would be a top 15. When more demo's are coming, there will be nothing left I'm afraid.

Well the top fifteen is still an acceptable number. We pretty much know that there won't be anymore demos at least until the current ones expire and Nintendo decides whether or not to give us demos for more games.

I also believe that this week's charts should have gone ahead as normal with a message that they may cease to continue depending on our reaction. There are still many people who would have liked their regular although slightly condensed charts. We, the readers, should have been included in the poll of whether to cease the charts or not.

I opened up two topics. I hope to see you all there with the list (without demo's) till Nintendo finds a solution or when there are so many demo's that there is no list to speak of:

The placement of the demos doesn't matter since there is no importance on whether one free demo is downloaded more so than another (I assume everyone is downloading all five anyway).

I do hope Nintendo changes what goes into the "Most Popular Titles" category because the demos are pushing games out of the spotlight and it's not really fair to those publishers/developers. They should just have a separate tab for demos and be done with it. When I recorded the Japanese Top 20 Wednesday and the first few were demos I felt there was little point, so I cannot say I'm surprised to see this decision being taken. Now if Nintendo would provide us with actual sales numbers, that would be news worth reporting every week!

On the other hand, getting the top 20 for three different systems was becoming a bit of a chore, so I cannot say I'm overly sad about this turn of events!

Now this is sad, I rarely can connect my DSi to the internet, so I rarely know what's in the Top 20 unless I check Nintendo Life.
Dang, this is sad.

Now I'll never find out if a game overtakes the free DSiware stuff! [unless I actually take the time to check myself, but that's not gonna happen untill I get more DSiware.]
