Topic: Pokemon amiibo TCG: Yay or Nay

I haven't heard many people talk about the possibilities of amiibo functions coming to the Pokemon TCG. Given Nintendo's history of implementing card technology, such as the E-Reader, I think its a given. Of course cost is a factor here, so I'm kinda thinking if they do integrate amiibo cards into the TCG, it would like be random chase cards and not EVERY card.

What are your thoughts? Would you like to see amiibo tech come to the Pokemon TCG? Or does the likely increase in cost of booster packs and starter decks turn you off?

I don't know about the card game, but amiibo cards for some kind of Pokemon game seems a near certainty. I can't see why Nintendo couldn't make the external NFC device they're selling for older 3DS models work with iOS and Android devices. That would then open the door to an online Pokemon TCG in that space. I'd be very surprised if something like that wasn't already in development.

I'm saying no. Only because I don't think Nintendo would sell the packs of cards cheap enough to be close enough in price to normal trading cards. Also if they were to do it then it would need to be every card. Nintendo would have to do it for every card and I can see that being a new TCG/video game cross over where the following things could happen.

1) As Sean_Aaron games could be played online and handled using NFC devices like phones or tablets.
2) In the next Pokemon game using the cards will allow you to capture the creature in the game.
3) The ulitimate cross platform game where you get your Pokemon at a basic starter level and then level up using both the TCG and game. Then trading the card will mean that you've given up the card and the in game Pokemon.

It would be really expensive. I wouldn't say no if the price stayed the same, but I think it is more likely to get a different card game with Amiibo, maybe something new. If the digital game and physical game were the same then I think it would get kinda boring. If the was some way where the cards could be used for a TCG and the amiibo functionality could be used for an action game (maybe you build your character equipment, similar to Hand of Fate) that could be interesting.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@DefHalan: I don't see the games being the same. You play TCG games as normal, but they can be refereed by a app. They could even throw some animations in for good measure.

Then you take your same card to add your new shiny Charizard to the latest console game just by touching the card to the console NFC reader. There could also be a link between both games where the more you use the Pokemon in either TCG or video game would level the Pokemon up.

As for cost. Nintendo could swallow the cost as I'm sure it's would only be a small bit off the profit of each card pack sold. I know if they did bring TCG video game link cards I'd buy them. And I've never brought a Pokemon TCG card in my life. I've been given single ones for free by Pokemon stores in Japan or Game in the UK.

They could make the amiibo cards like the shiny ones: only included in special decks or box sets. That would give them appeal for collectors without requiring them for regular play.

sounds cool especially for me as a pokemon fan, but knowing those guys ask almost €5.- for a measly 10 paper cards. :l

No. I just want a new handheld Pokémon TCG game that is similar to the two released for Game Boy Color all of those years ago. The whole appeal of those games is that cards were so easy to obtain (all for the price of a single game), and I didn't need to buy a whole heap of physical cards to enjoy it (even though I was collecting physical cards here and there at the time). I would NOT however, want a successor to the GBC games to be, in any way, similar to the one available on PC and iPad. Those games require a ridiculous amount of grinding and are exclusively online only, which put me off completely. Meanwhile, my VC download of the GBC game has over 200 hours logged in (which includes some hours from my cousin in Turkey, who doesn't know any English, mind, you, who was also crazy about the game).

I would be more than happy if they rebooted and annualised the series for 3DS, as there are more than enough cards being released on an annual basis to justify such a release. They would certainly make more money from me by annually releasing a digitised version of the card game as I no longer buy any cards. A couple of years ago, I impulsively bought a few Black and White era theme decks, but I had only ever played with them once or twice and I won't be bothering again. It's just too much of a bother trying to play with physical cards when I have plenty of multiplayer games that I can play on Wii U.

In short, I see absolutely no reason how the TCG would benefit in any way from amiibo cards. Each theme deck already includes a redemption code for the Online version of the game anyway, and a digitised version of the game will get tedious very quickly if we are constantly required to arbitrarily scan in cards. There are other concepts that The Pokémon Company can explore in which amiibo can be better utilised. The TCG, at least in its long-established state, is not one of them.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

Not something I'll be involved in. I care about the aesthetic and displaying the amiibo much more than the content they provide.

I was wondering if there was a topic on this. I am honestly pretty amazed it never happened. Either using the TCG cards or separate Amiibo cards like Animal Crossing did. Seems like it would have been an obvious choice. It might be related to the failed e-reader back in the day.

Not gonna lie, I am still kind of hoping that when Pokemon comes to Switch, a system with native amiibo support, that they do some kind of Amiibo functionality.

What's the point in even having a video game version of a card game if you need the physical cards to play it? That is such a stupid idea. That makes about as much sense as releasing Uno amiibo cards in order to play the digital version of the game. Ridiculous.
