@jump didn't sky landers come out years and years before hand?
Skylanders in it's first 6 months sold the same amount as Amiibo has right now.
I'm not trying to put Amiibo down as it's down a good job of servicing Nintendo fans with their own toys-to-life but it never took off in a craze. There's 136 Amiibo and 60 million 3DS users and 13 million Wii U users and only 40 millions Amiibo sales and look at how hard Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival flopped.
@jump festival flopped for different reasons. It's actually awful.
I got Amiibo Festival for less than £10 from The Games Collection a few months ago (it's gone up a bit since though - http://www.thegamecollection.net/animal-crossing-amiibo-festi... ). I think that's probably a fair price for two Amiibos and three "Amiibo" cards...
If it had been that price to start with, I think it would have been better receieved and sold more, but hey ho. Win/win for the consumer?
Yes the craze has died down but I can see amiibo running for many more years yet. With Infinity gone and Skylanders on the ropes Nintendo probably has what's left of the market share and they can be inventive with their functionality with each new release. Even with decreased sales I can't believe N arn't still making a profit on them as a whole. If they're smart they'll include afew in the inevitable holiday bundles come November.
With a new console out there will be new IP's to milk... also with the Bayonetta/Shovel Knight amiibo's out there it still leaves the door open for 3rd parties (Steamworld? Gunvolt??)... codename steam?!? xD
Also, I think they'll really go to town with amiibo for the Fire Emblem Warriors game, i'll bet my lunch that Chrom will get one eventually.
I know if more games used amiibo like how they were used in Mario Kart 8 or Super Mario Maker, I personally would be a lot more enthusiastic about amiibo.
Why can my Ness amiibo still not score me a Ness-related outfit or weapon in some game?
I'm quite relieved that there are no more (announced) amiibo for the time being. II have nearly everything except Gold/Silver Mario, Gold Megaman, the Skylanders ones (I'm not interested in them and don't really perceive them to be amiibo), some of the Animal Crossing cards (mainly series 1 and the extremely limited Sanrio set) and... I think that's it. I have the Monster Hunter Stories set too, but I have nowhere to display them due to their size.
i was at my local walmart, which i rarely go to, and was quite surprised to see switches in stock but zero amiibo, not even a section dedicated to them anymore. it was usually a small space maybe 20 pegs but it was there last year. and it had a section for lego demensions right where amiibo 'should' have been, so im not sure whats up at that store. best buy, toys r us and gamestop still have amiibo stock right now. BB has animal crossing only, had a few botw links last month, gamestop animal crossing and various late smash waves and toysrus the same.
imho, like the whole toys to life market, amiibo have lost a lot of its momentum, but could be somewhat fixed by making the content better. all amiibo should give at least a costume or portrait or something of that particular character in game and then a bit of bonus goodies and/or maybe something else if it fits. sometimes they do this right(fire emblem, but those are usually rare) and i think the figures themselves are getting better but the actual content they unlock is mostly lacking.
i hope they continue w them tho, even tho i only buy a few these days i like to see what they come up with.
It certainly seems to have died down. I was pretty bummed that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 didn't get any Amiibo or even support for the Shulk Amiibo... If we don't get Amiibo for the upcoming FE or Kirby and other first and second party titles (Bayonetta 3) then it might be a sign that Nintendo is phasing it out. Pokemon SM and USUM didn't get any support either, despite there being several Pokemon Amiibo. I am really shocked Pokemon never jumped onto that bandwagon with cards like Animal Crossing did. Maybe bad memories from the E-reader days...

I really liked the way FE Fates implemented amiibo, so I'd be very disappointed to not see the same amiibo implementation brought back for FE Switch (with support for the 5 new FE amiibo released since then). I felt that Echoes using phantoms that could only be used for 1 turn was a huge step back...
I’m fine with that. Have purchased every amiibo ever so far, just pre ordered the detective pikachu. Would like to be able to say I have a complete collection but if it ever has a surge again and they release a shed ton more, i’ll probably phase out. 1 or 2 here or there though, that I’m fine with.
The big retail stores near me have the amiibos on discount, but only the common ones. The more limited ones or newer are being sold at quite the expensive price.
There are some game shop in my place (At Tunjungan Center, the Black market of video game shop) sold Animal Crossing Amiibo figurines with very insane cheap price. Just IDR 25,000 or US$ 1.86 !!
And the Amiibos are Legit Original.
