I suppose the economic argument is that the low supply is part of what creates the demand. People rush to buy them because a) they know they won't get a second chance and b) because they know they will be able to sell them on at a profit. If there was enough supply for everyone a and b wouldn't apply and all the "buzz" would go out of the market, possibly resulting in lower sales. Having said all that though I reckon they could release much, much more stock and still leave the market wanting more.

Nintendo don't care about their fans, why would they fix their amibo problem?

I admit that the limited stock of amiibo is really grating, but some people love to just overreact completely.

Yet nobody thinks of the logistics. We have no idea how and where amiibos are being produced, so it's entirely possible that Nintendo simply can't produce more. The factories need to be paid, prepared, and equipped with all necessary materials and molds, staff has to be readied for quality control, planning for which amiibo is to get produced in which quantities needs to be done... the list goes on.
With a company like Nintendo, who haven't been in the toy production market that much, this is likely to be rather new as of yet. since their toys so far were manufactured by different companies (regular toys), or in very small quantity (Club Nintendo items, Limited Edition bonuses, non-peripherals).

Also: paranoia fuels the scalpers. Instead of getting all uppity about amiibos already being sold out, wait for Nintendo to restock them. You're not gonna die from not having one specific thing as early as possible, and the world won't end, either. Cut the drama, ignore the scalpers, get stuff later.

they absolutely could scale up if they chose to do so. Probably pretty quickly.

Considering that I thought this forum was about their lack of games coming out on their systems, I have to agree on the Amiibo's. Since the gold mario was announced, I have not found it anywhere in stores...I was about to clip it out of the newspaper and just look at that instead. It's only been the same ones that I see in stores (Mario, Luigi, Kirby, Samus, Bowser, Peach, Zelda, Link) and that's all I've seen, so I don't even really know what else they have released...I can't even find a Diddy Kong one, and I thought Sonic and Tails came out too. Other than that, I've just been collecting them and keeping them, but for the people who use and buy them, this is something of poor business practice and shows that nintendo just doesn't care about their fans as much as what people think.

Since NES days, they were a great family company. If you wrote them a letter, they'd respond. Call them, they'd respond and be very friendly in listening and talking to you. It was that way all to the N64, but seemed to turn around at the age of Gamecube. I wonder at times if it's their new president. Is he like the previous president of Disney, trying to ruin the company and disgrace it, or is he actually trying to help them? Disney is not what they used to be, their animated movies are not as great, and with the fact that Frozen was their last hit (big hero 6 flopped and many others before Frozen flopped), it seems that the company is falling out of it's once grace. This makes me wonder if nintendo is falling like them too. For nintendo, they used to be the big company to always follow...great games, good service and great systems...but recently, they only care about the money and not the fans, which is starting to hurt them...just look at the Wii U. Nintendo can get out of this by making a better system with just a normal controller...stop the game shortages, work on getting other companies back into their grips, listening to fans and stepping back into the past at how they were with fans and the company.

Nintendo have always been utter milkshakes. They just hide behind a facade of cute family-friendly characters. They have a tradition of being extremely hard-nosed in business and not particularly customer friendly, often to their own detriment. I say that as a fan.

That's my opinion anyway!

Gotta agree on that! I always thought Nintendo was an extremely friendly company due to they appeariance and style of the games they make, but after reading a book on their history and business practice as well as having a direct contact with customer service when my gamepad broke (they wanted 85 pounds for repair, even though it was still under warranty... does it even cost that much to produce a new gamepad?!), I have to say Nintendo truly are utter cheeseburgers!

Nevertheless, I still love all the Nintendo IPs and games, just my opinion about the company changed completely.

@Kaze_Memaryu
Thank you.

There is also the fact that many people bought certain amiibo, because they knew that they would eventually become rare, which lead to further shortages. I'd guess no one expected that so many people would buy the Wii Fit Trainer and other not-as-popular or well-known characters.

@JLPick You can't find the Gold Mario because it was an exclusive limited edition release. You generally had to be at Walmart at midnight the night of release to get one, and even then, there was a chance they'd run out.

Also, in response to all the bashing of Nintendo's history and business practices, there's a couple things you've gotta keep in mind. Nintendo views their developers as artists and want to protect their artists and the integrity of their creations. Nintendo's always been careful about quality control in this regard and quick on legal matters because of it. As for the restrictions placed on developers (of all parties) for the NES? That wasn't Nintendo being greedy or cruel or whatever. That was Nintendo assessing what caused the crash of '83 and doing everything in their power to ensure that the NES didn't flop in the US. They limited how many games could come to the system from each 3rd party to 5 a year so that the devs would be forced to use that time to make the game play well (or at least keep them from making a game every month or two and having no quality to show for it. Nintendo was Draconian in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations because they felt they had to be.

Remember the story about the Nintendo PlayStation they were working on? And how Nintendo apparently screwed Sony out of the deal? Well, not really. Sony's contract attacked the artistic integrity of Nintendo's developers and they weren't ok with that, so Nintendo got out of that deal and set up a new one (and obviously, that didn't go so well, either.) The use of cartridges on the N64 was partially to keep costs low, but also to avoid insane loading times that the PSx wound up being prone to. Even the minidiscs of the Gamecube era were designed as a form of physical DRM that would make piracy difficult without really screwing the consumer out of anything they deserved.

Nintendo may have had some questionable practices and decisions in the past, but there's no question that was to avoid a much worse outcome.

It was limited edition and only for Wal-mart. That's why you can't find it anymore.

I suggest you do some research before searching. Tails never got an amiibo. Secondly, I've seen Diddy everywhere here, so he may just be popular in your area. As for Sonic, well he's only semi-rare for some reason.

Other than that, I've just been collecting them and keeping them, but for the people who use and buy them, this is something of poor business practice and shows that nintendo just doesn't care about their fans as much as what people think.

Or they have issues keeping up with demand for 50+ figurines, but I suppose it's easier to use the "don't care" card. Oh, and they must care since they are actually restocking the amiibos occasionally.

Since NES days, they were a great family company. If you wrote them a letter, they'd respond. Call them, they'd respond and be very friendly in listening and talking to you. It was that way all to the N64, but seemed to turn around at the age of Gamecube. I wonder at times if it's their new president.

If you do some research, NoA had the following presidents:

Minoru Arakawa (founding-2002) (fyi Howard Lincoln was never the president. He was the chairman.)
Tatsumi Kimishima (2002-2006)
Reggie Fils-Aime (2006-now)

Is he like the previous president of Disney, trying to ruin the company and disgrace it, or is he actually trying to help them?

I'm not really sure where you are going with this. Disney is even bigger now and is making a profit (as of last year). How are they "ruined"? For that matter, how is NoA "ruined"?

Disney is not what they used to be, their animated movies are not as great,

You're right. They are bigger now and they have made a steady increase in profit from 1991 to now. As for their animated movies, you seem to be cherry-picking the bad ones. Let me remind you that not all 1990s animated flicks were diamonds.

and with the fact that Frozen was their last hit (big hero 6 flopped and many others before Frozen flopped),

Um, Big Hero 6 made over $650 million in the box office and was critically acclaimed to the point it won the Oscar for best animated feature. How the heck is this a flop? Also, examples of those "many others" that flopped? Most of them made the company a lot of money, but some did get panned by critics like Cars 2. However a few is not many.

it seems that the company is falling out of it's once grace.

Once again, what are you even talking about? Did you do any research to back your claims or is this just based on your personal opinion?

This makes me wonder if nintendo is falling like them too. For nintendo, they used to be the big company to always follow...great games, good service and great systems...but recently, they only care about the money and not the fans, which is starting to hurt them...

Okay, what about Nintendo Directs? How about these events at Gamestop and Best Buy? How about the digital event aimed at the fans, not the media? How about Club Nintendo and the new program? Do these not exist to you?

just look at the Wii U. Nintendo can get out of this by making a better system with just a normal controller...

Like the N64 and Gamecube?

stop the game shortages,

By pumping out half-finished titles? No thank you. I'll take complete quality games over quantity.

work on getting other companies back into their grips,

Like the companies that insulted their fanbase?

listening to fans

Gamecube adapter. Mewtwo and future DLC. Feedback for amiibos hence the restocks. Xenoblade Chronicles in America. I can go on...

and stepping back into the past at how they were with fans and the company.

You mean like how they were with you?

This whole rant was based on false accusations. You seemed to cherry-pick the bad stuff and failed to do proper research to back up all your claims. Even if this was personal opinion, it still seems very narrow and baseless.

Frozen was not a bad movie...just over rated. The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and Big Hero 6 were not great? I disagree with that.

Because they don't do exactly what "fans" tell them, like go 3rd Party, move to apps, and give away all content for free.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

if they did what "the fans" wanted their next console would be called the PS420blazeit and release with Mario Theft Auto and Mario Turismo Seriously I'm glad Nintendo are a Japanese company and largely ignore the Western bickering. Others would've caved 10 years ago!!

Those who are saying Nintendo doesn't ignore their fans - have you ever had a direct contact with Nintendo customer service? I don't want them to listem to the fans in terms of game-making, cause that's what they do best and definitely don't need any help/advice. However, their customer service is simply crap. Not respecting the warranty? Sending consoles back in even worse shape than before rapair? Intentianally reducing stock in order to create demand? I used to think Nintendo was fantastic towards their fans until, as I mentioned earlier, my Wii U stopped working (by itself, after 8 months) and had to send it for repair. Terribly disappointing experience. I'll keep playing Nintendo game and buy their merchendise simple because I really enjoy the products, but the company lost A LOT in my eyes. (Hopefully, I'm the only one of a few customers with such terrible experience)

Nintendo's customer service is a mess, yeah. They're not the only ones. Gaming companies in general need to pick it up in this area, but I was never under the misconception that they'd have good customer service. Also your Wii U died in eight months? That's nuts! Definitely an abnormally bad experience, but still!
