Maybe we'll get the NES Mario games as 3D classics.
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

Considering it's somewhat of a flawed compromise release with the loss of like a 1/4 of the screen space (which causes issues in some late stages with leaps of faith) it's not a bad game. But due to that if they add GBA to the roster of VC games you can kiss it goodbye as NES Classics SMB does it right and full screen with hot saves and hi score saving too, just as the GBA 'mario advance' stuff gave us the other games gutting and tweaked from Allstars or snes remixed ports (smw1 and 2.)

@tanookisuit but Deluxe brought various improvements, such as stage select, simultaneous multiplayer, challenges, and it had the levels from The Lost Levels. Hopefully Nintendo will make a compromise, taking the camera from the original NES game, and injecting it with the extras from Deluxe.
They'll probably want us to buy 3D Classics of SMB 1, 2, 3, and the Lost Levels, so I'm guessing they won't release this game because they'd be giving us two games for the price of 1. Plus, the screen doesn't really do it justice. Then again, a lot of people might buy this and the NES versions, so I guess it's possible they'd release it anyway just to try to sell us more copies of the same game over and over.

Maybe they could've done it as a colorized Super Mario Land ROM hack?
For me the Deluxe version lacks the second screen. The picture is just too small for my liking. You couldn't see the ground when standing on a platform. Leaps of faith all the time if you don't know the original by heart.
If you want a good handheld Super Mario Bros. port/remake
I suggest Nintendo makes Super Mario Bros. double screen
I get it, a mix of the features of Deluxe yet the full view area of the GB Classic would be best, but also NOA is notoriously lazy so I was taking it from a black or white comparison knowing their habits. The mix was best, but I was going for all or nothing.

makes it 3D
makes it (like) Deluxe
then re-release it.
You're smart enough to know that Nintendo won't ever do that, SKTTR
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

I wish i would have known that back in the day 'cause it sounds awesome. It would be really great if Nintendo did that. Keep the orginal graphics though and maybe make them 3D. I mean look at the success of MegaMan 10.
