Topic: SNES VC for older 3ds

If the older models simply aren't up to the task (I still think they can) then Nintendo should do remastered editions along the lines of Segas 3D classics. What do you think or would a SNES classics remix be out of the question?

I think Nintendo would have started by now if it was ever going to happen, but who knows?

@gcunit
My problem with Nintendos reason just doesn't work out. If a modder can get it to run decently then Nintendo should be able to do even better. Emulators are just programs so optimizing the SNES VC for older models is just harder than the new. I don't know why people keep going on about special chips, ROMs don't use chips it's just space on a memory card now not a cart.

@GameOtaku Modders can't get SNES emulators to run efficiently on the O3DS. And Nintendo isn't going to release Virtual Console games that only run "decently". On top of that, Nintendo needs to ensure it runs well and still allows for HOME menu access and all of its features, which gives them less power to work with than modders.

@GameOtaku The sound on that is terribly choppy and according to the comments many games don't run. I would be very upset if I bought super Mario World and it sounded like that. And on top of that, it doesn't have to worry about running the HOME menu features in the background.

Considering it was a non Nintendo employee who got it to run proves that it's possible, Nintendo wouldn't need to hack or anything to get it to run.

@GameOtaku I feared you were going to get onto this part of the topic. It's been done to death already:

"But emulators..."
"But emulators don't..."
"But if Nintendo emulators..."
"But Nintendo don't/haven't so just get used to it".

The SNES only has a 3.5 MHz processor, o3ds 268 MHz and you're telling me that's not enough? That's at least 80 times more powerful! Sure SOME games may not but MOST will run to the standard needed. I think it's a crap move bear the end of its life Nintendo screws over the majority of 3ds owners (we asked for it for a long time) and they put it on the Advance SP of the 3ds family. At least Sega is doing great by its fans and making cheap 3D remasters.

Then I must have only imagined emulating in 2000 on a computer way less advanced than the 3ds with Windows 98 running Sailor Moon Another Story and Sailor Moon SuperS Fighting. 3D games like ocarina of time require more resources than SNES games!

@Ichi
No it doesn't there's not much to SNES games, they are 16 bit. Super smash bros 3ds shuts down most of the system to run on older 3ds and restarts upon return to home. If that's all the SNES games will do then no big problem. NES games didn't get pixel perfect option but SNES did? Cmon it may be "easier" on the new 3ds but certainly not impossible for the old.

Yeah I've read about it it takes at least 4ghz for accuracy and the new 3ds can't do it.

I think Nintendo is being truthful on this one. The SNES had a few chipsets and in some cases like Mario Kart it had special chipsets on the game itself to run them. To emulate all of those chips is a lot of work for the 3ds to handle unless they have the most elegant programmer of all time putting together the code. This is why the Genesis was always easier to emulate back in the day because it mainly just used one chipset.

Still boils down to that some could work and well. Take Pokemon for example, they modified it for Pokemon bank and online trading so does that mean it's not true emulation? Or make a version specifically to run on older models.

No, it doesn't. For it to work well, the games require at least 300 MHz, and it still needs a lot of work.

Basically, either something is emulated or it's running natively. Just because something is emulated doesn't mean you can't add features to it.

What about Sega 3D classics? Isn't that emulation but with extra add ons? (ex Genesis 1 or 2, Japan or international, button mapping, save states) as you said although emulated you can still as features.
Either way it's still a crap move by Nintendo to screw old users. With it nearing time for a new handheld, I see this as a way to just move some new 3ds units. Which is more profit 10000 new 3ds or 20000 VC games?
10000x200=2,000,000
20000x8= 160,000
Math can be harsh, with greed on the mind!

This thread is a perfect example of why i weep for the future of our planet (theoretically; everyone knows i have no emotions), as younglings seem to enjoy being willfully ignorant of reality, but still continue to insist they are right on things they know nothing about.

I'm probably older than both of you. Nintendo could've made it available to everyone not necessarily emulation but ports or collections like Megaman legacy. Don't you think it's odd that we have been asking since they started putting VC on 3ds for the SNES games only to wait till the end of its life to put them on a slightly updated system with only 2 (3 since e3) that run specially for it? Those numbers were just theoretical, but what is the hot market in retro gaming right now? 16 bit SNES and Genesis! I own a SNES but I'm not paying $200 for a cart of earthbound. Besides that October tgey said flatly no more VC titles and less than 5 months later look what happened. You'd think they would at least put more NES or Gameboy VC on to make up for it.

GameOtaku

In October of last year, Nintendo said there was no more VC coming. Auto correct needs correcting.

Not at all, my point is simply this, why did they choose to emulate SNES on the new 3ds instead of making it available to all platforms (3ds,2ds, new 3ds) they had options to make it happen much like what they did for Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater. I would rather support the developers than free emulation. Why not just compile some SNES games in a cart and call it SNES classics reloaded? Something for a wide audience instead of a relatively small one.

Reasons that I won't upgrade to new
1. Hate the nub
2. Face tracking since I wear glasses (turning it off would negate the whole point
3. Only xenoblade, binding of Isaac and runbow (not enough exclusives to warrant an upgrade)
4. I have one of the larger available mem cards for 3ds, the new uses only mini sd, not only that it doesn't come with a charger!

GameOtaku

the_shpydar

I would genuinely be shocked if you are older than me, since there's maybe a dozen people on the site who are. My age is right in my profile, feel free to check it.

But anyway, what you're describing now is not emulation. Releasing a compilation title on cart or as a newly produced download title is a completely different beast. And as to why they haven't done that? Simple business. No matter how "big" the retro market appears to be online and in gaming forums, the reality is that it's not that large of a portion of the install base or the gaming market in general. Producing new compilations takes significant money, time and resources. It's not simply taking some rom files and slapping them on a cart. That's just not how it works.

If they thought an SNES compilation would be profitable they would have produced it, plain and simple. They are a business, and a business's main goal is to be profitable. This isn't rocket science, and it's frustrating that some people still act like they understand how the business works yet get upset that the ideas they have, which would almost certainly result in a net loss to a publisher, don't happen (usually leading to the ridiculous complaints of "Nintendo is lazy" yadda yadda BS).
