So after downloading my 10 games off eShop I decided to play some classic Super Mario Bros. I was disappointed to discover that the B and A buttons on the NES are mapped to the B and A buttons on the 3DS respectively. This really throws me off. Remember how in Super Mario World they changed running to the Y button and jumping to the B button? That's because it's a lot less awkward to hold the run button while jumping that way.
I checked the menu screen and out of the two options there, none had to do with controls. The 2 paged manual didn't help much either. It may not matter so much in games like Zelda or Yoshi, but it really bugs me in SMB. Does anyone else feel awkward with this control scheme, or am I just crazy?

Yeah I'm well used to the A B format, it seems natural for the way I play games, but I think the ability to map you own buttons would nice. (I'm going to guess X and Y do nothing as I haven't got my downloads yet due to being in Europe)

It does bothers me, it bothers me a lot!! Y run, B jump, must be the official configuration for NES games. Hope they at least give us the option on the update.

Yeah, it bothers me too. I hope we get options in the update. I originally learned to play SMB with the buttons side-by-side on the NES, constantly keeping my thumb tip holding run and rocking the base of my thumb to jump. It's totally awkward trying to play this game and having to hold my thumb at such a backwards angle or else let go of the run button to jump.
In the Ambassador versions of the NES games, X opened the menu. In the public versions it is the same as B.
An option to change it would've been nice (or even a third option to also allow X to be Start, like how Y is Select).
So you can at least use it for SMB3 in a SMW snes style except its one row of buttons over. Did I get that right? I don't like the diagonal away from the gamepad angle of the default A-B layout... The angle should be snes style on super speed and jump, at least when you have a diamond button arrangement.
I wish every game had configurable buttons, so I certainly wish they would add in customizable controls for the 3DS VC games.
They have configurable controls for the Game Gear games. It's useful if you own a game such as Sonic Drift 2 where you have to hold down the "Drive" buttons for a long period of time. When I get tired from pressing "A," I could use "L" or "R" instead. They even have those "Rapid A and B" buttons like on the NES Advantage.

That's because Sega puts more effort into their emulators than Nintendo. We could have SGB palettes and Game Link support (not that it matters to me, since none of my friends have 3DSes) if Nintendo cared.
