Creating charm and challenge through stuff like level design and smart enemies is one thing (although that can also be taken too far), but the basic gameplay needs to work right. Just because you're walking on ice (which only occurs in small sections, anyway) doesn't mean your jumping should be all screwed up. Jumping in Ice Climber gives you hardly any momentum nor mid-air control, plus the moving clouds have some collision detection problems. D.K. Jr. is flat out broken, as you're as slow as a sloth and can't jump more than a foot in the air.
These are video games, not real life. You're supposed to be able to jump multiple times your own height and have impeccable physics-defying mid-air control.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

So I finally tried Yoshi. I love it. This is honestly one of the games I expected to hate, but I gave it a chance and ended up playing it for 30 minutes. It's really cute and addicting. A hidden gem for me. Good thing this was included in the free ambassador games or else I probably would have never gotten it. Boy I would have missed out.The only game I actually hate is DK JR. It sucks. You can barely jump, every little fall kills you, and it's too slow. I really wish Nintendo included something other than this game. I'll probably just delete it. I can't figure out how to play the Golf one...Ice Climbers is pretty unfair because of the jump. It's a nice little game, but I'll never play it more than 10 minutes. It gets too frustrating too quick because of something as basic as the jump. As for the rest I love them. Except Metroid and Zelda ll because I haven't played them yet. Can't wait to though. Over all this was a incredibly nice thing of Nintendo to do.

Wrecking Crew and Yoshi really surprised me with how fun and addicting they are. In fact, they may be my favorite of the bunch. Besides, Metroid/Zelda/mario of course, but seriously they are really great. Wrecking crew is kinda like a more basic version of Donkey Kong '84, which by extension is an older version of Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and it's really addicting, lol. Yoshi is simple, but immediately addicting. There's a lot of skill involved, actually. it's just plain fun to play. The music is also charming and fun. Actually, even Golf is fun, and I was expecting that to be complete and utter crap, lol. I'm glad these were free, because I never would've bought Wrecking Crew, Yoshi, or Golf otherwise.

I can't figure out how to play the Golf one...
Check out the specific game thread to find out how to play. I wish they had included full instruction manuals instead of just listing the controls.

I kinda like DK Jr. It's really short though. I must have beat this back when I was a kid cause I beat it in like 10 minutes. As soon as I started playing I suddenly had flashbacks and knew exactly what to do.Weird huh? Anyway the top three games are obviously Mario, Zelda 1 and Metroid.Zelda 2 has always been a favorite of mine despite the unfair hate it gets. The rest of the games are meh.

DK Jr. is a wuss. He falls two feet from a vine, he busts his balls and dies...@Link79When you go through the 4 levels, you start again but it progressively gets harder and harder.Oh, and thanks for sharing that- about the red doors in Metroid. Now I can get back into playing and hopefully beat it. On SMB, i made it to 7-1 with 5 lives... and I barely even ran with holding the b-button. It actually feels kinda easy that way... I have the game suspended lol

I got to 8-2 using warp zones... One at 1-2 and one vine on 4-2. Do you use warp zones or beat it all the way through?

I've given all the games a try, ended up deleting most of them (kept the usual, mario, zelda, metroid though Zelda has aged badly imo).
I don't know tbh, I'm usually one to enjoy NES games, but these titles have been underwhelming for me. I hate the jump mechanics in Ice Climbers, Donkey Kong Jr wasn't that much enjoyable either. Wrecking Crew and Yoshi were fun for a while, but I'm just not that interested in them anymore but they were free, so I can't complain that much, I'll just stick to what I like and call it a day while waiting for the GBA stuff. :3

can somebody tell me how to play nes open golf. I always press a when the line is over the white marker but the ball usually only goes a centimmetre.

@ Komicturtle92Mario has the same problem in the original DK. You barely fall two feet and you're dead. Everybody seems to love that game though. At least the Nes version of DK Jr isn't missing a stage like the Nes DK original.

Exactly! I have that exact same problem! I can't figure this damn game out...

I use warp zones yeah lol I just want to breeze through and beat it.
Back to Donkey Kong:
Do they have Donkey Kong 2 on VC by any chance? Or DK3- whatever it's called. I know the main character is named Stan with a bug spray thing...
94. Posted: Sat 3rd Sep 2011 04:21 BST
@ Komicturtle92Dk Jr pretty much is DK 2. It's the sequel to the original. All three DK Nes games are on Wii's VC.

At least Mario (or Jumpman)doesn't move like a sloth and knows how to jump decently.
@90 and 92See my link in Post #84. Specifically, you have to press "A" three times, not just twice. Once to start, once to set the power, and once to set the accuracy.

@ BulbasaurusRexI guess I've just had more practice with DK Jr. I beat that game several times as a kid.It just takes some getting used to. Strangely enough I wasn't able to finish the original DK until many years later. It's alot harder for me.
97. Posted: Sat 3rd Sep 2011 04:58 BST
Wrecking Crew is a lot more fun than I expected it to be and I think I'm going to have to "cheat" and get a Map for Zelda! I'm also loving the love that Yoshi is getting. Nintendo Life should revisit their review and give it something other than a four

On your first shot, press the button when the arrow is as far as it can get, then press the button again when the second arrow is on or very close to the white line. Don't worry if you make crappy shots at first. This is a pretty hard golf game.

Hit A before the marker bounces back to that line. THEN hit it a SECOND time when the split marker goes to that line. The first one is the measure of your backswing for power... then the second press is your accuracy. That's what you use the line to measure for. Took me a while to figure out, too.
