You may be right on this one but Super Mario Land's level design and enemy placement was topnotch garbage. I mean, it being short wasn't enough that they had to make uninteresting, ugly layouts that were repetitive and boring. If it wasn't for the vehicle levels that game would be even worse than it already is. And it's pretty bad.

Well, during the time when it was released i saw past all of that considering it was the first Portable Mario of it's time. I looked at it as Nintendo's odd ball quirky & fresh first attempt if anything. The vehicle portions were pretty special for the time, the music was memorable, the SFX were pretty trippy, you were supposed to find Daisey instead of Peach and the entire game alone was just a crazy unique breed of Mario all on it's own. But you're right, the stage design for the most part is pretty lousy in this day and age. But the super simplicity of the graphics and slippery wierd controls almost compliment it, it's hard to explain.

But ya, I totaly agree with ya. Maybe it's SML2's longer leangth that turns me off considering i have to endure more of the same craptastic level design.
Where as SML can be beaten in not even 2 hours. lol SML2 to me just wasn't that fun....Decent overall, but i wish more of the stages were like Wario's Castle. That would of been amazing.

What soundtrack? I remember maybe... three songs.

yet all 3 you have to admit are pretty memorable.

Especially the underground tune This track is so enchanting, hypnotic & alluring that it puts kittens in a trance and makes them get up and do the Egypt-O dance.

I have yet to play the other two but I am looking forward to them.

The underground theme is pretty cool. I mean, even Brawl has it on there, so Nintendo must think highly of it as well. lol

You have yet to play SML2 & 3? If that's what you mean, SML3: 'Wario Land' puts both SML 1 & 2 to shame. It's clearly of higher quality, and it's incredibly polished all around. Shake it! WL1 & 4(if you look past the unchallenging gameplay and easy to find treasure pieces) are the best in the WL franchise imo. 2's good, but 3 felt like one massive chore to complete.

It was 'too' long for it's good, too simular to 2 in ways, the amount of stage revisiting and backtracking was nuts, the frustratin factor was sky high do to Wario's triple hit reaction, and overall it just wasn't quite as fun to play. But at least it was pretty challenging, unlike 4...Which i'm still currently playing hehe.

I've played 4 but even if I played the other ones, I doubt they could win my heart like Shake It! did. That game is truly awesome and is one of the best games to come out of this generation.

Ya, Shake it completey anihilates the rest of them...It's in an entirely different league all together.
One thing i admire about WL4 though were the twisted funky & monstrous boss designs....You've gotta admit, they were pretty awesome, regardless of the easy difficulty. Spoiled Rotten is personally one of my favorites, not to mention the Clock chicken. Shake it's boss fights however from a gameplay perspective were just flat out amazing....Hot Rod Fredrick(completely forgot his name) the 2nd Boss, where you're strapped in Wario's Boxing glove vehicle with the tilt controls made my jaw drop and smile at the same time. Possibly one of the most innovative & fun boss battles i've ever experienced in gaming.

Shake it is such an underrated masterpiece, how dare NSMBWii get the fame award while completely overshadowing the far superior Wario Land.
GoodFeel knocked it out of the park, although I'll admit Shake it! wasn't quite as bizzare as WL1,2 and 4, but it had it's own distinct style and it completely worked.

Here's hoping Wario Land 6 make it to either the 3DS or Wii U. Too bad the franchise has taken a complete back seat to Mario. Shake it's sales were pretty weak based on what i remember, which is pretty suprising....

Well no, it doesnt clearly put either of them to shame. You may be a big Warioland fan, but that doesnt mean SML3 was better. I've purchased SML1 and SML2 for my 3DS, but I have no intention of buying 3 - and yes, I have tried it before. Opinions differ on the matter, but it's a lie to say Warioland was flat out the best.

I have never got to play the original Wario Land, and for some reason they won't release it in the US eShop, but it does looks like it's a good one. I do like Wario Land 4...though I've kind gotten bored of it lately (beat it years ago on the GBA and now I'm an Ambassador).
Someone mentioned the simplicity look and feel of the first SML is part of what sort of makes it charming, but personally, I feel that way alot more towards SML2. It's pretty easy, but I still find it to be pretty fun. It's not bad to have a nice, clean, fairly simple, Mario game to play on the go.

This is the thing though, I'm not a big Wario Fan, I'm a big 'Wario Land Shake it!' fan. I just recently got into the previous entries in the franchise WL1 aside. I'm not biased towards WL by anymeans. I just found Wario Land 1 to be a more polished, fine tuned and better designed platformer than SML2 that's all. many well agree. Also did you finish WL by the way? I usually don't like to form a real opinion on a game until I've finished it.

SML2's platforming was just lazy and sloppy in comparison, until Wario's Palace that is. The rest of the game 'everything else awesome aside' for me just got kind of got boring. But I adore everything else about SML2, but ugh, the stage design is such a poop fest.

Yeah, I guess the level design was a little bit lazy. Still, for what it is, I enjoy this game every once in a while, and I think a big part of that is it's simplicity....picturing a poop fest in the game is kind of disturbing by the way I wonder if the bunny ears would make....yeah never mind.

A poop fest would of probably fit in the quirky world of SML1 & 2 quite nicely! Kidding aside, and about the bunny ears/Carrot it would be incredibly rad if they ever made their way into a future mario. I'm pretty sure everybody will get burnt out on the Racoon Tail/Leaf/Takooni suite eventually as it's already been in SM3D Land, Makrio Kart 7 and the new NSMBW2 which is blasting out in Aug. As much as I love that retro power up, I'm dieing to see a return of the Frog suite in NSMB2.

You nailed it. The length of the game wasn't it's only problem though. It always felt like everything was moving in slow motion, especially the enemies. The paragoombas would jump and take like 5 seconds to come down again. I'd like to see them re-release the game with physics more inline with Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World. Anyone else feel the same way?

Well, that's one no vote. Anyone else? Don't get me wrong, it's still one of my favorite Game Boy games and I'd give it a 9 out of 10 easy but there is no denying that the enemies move incredibly slow. I'm glad Nintendo re-releases VC consoles in their original form but I'd kind of like to see them do something like they did with Metroid: Zero Mission. Stay true to the original but make it more colorful and faster.

I dont think it's unique enough to be remade, unlike Super Mario 64 for example.
It's a fun game, but it had its fair share of issues.
As you said the physics is strange, the game is overall far too easy, the few bonus stages add little to the game, the Bunny Ears powerup is overpowered, it had a super easy mode as opposed to a hard mode, the stage design was a tad boring, and lives became meaningless much as they do in Super Mario 3D Land.
That's a lot of problems, but I'd still say 7.5/10.
