Topic: How does it feel?

When you first pop in The Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening DX all those years ago, you play and enjoy the game. Now, on the 3DS VC, you buy the game again, and you play it again after so many years. You know that feeling?

And for the newer gamers: when you buy a game for the 3DS VC, you try it out and like it. And then you think "So this is what people played back then, huh." And you feel so honored/proud-of-self to be playing the great games of back in the day in your next gen console hand-held. You know that feeling?

I feel more like: "yeah! Here's an awesome game I never got to play because I was too little/not born yet!"

"That game with the shield looks kinda nice I wish my mom would buy it to me."

It never went beyond that until I could play it for the first time in my 3DS. Then it felt like...

"Now, if I could only kill these damn slot machine frogs."

I feel like the new generation of kids are missing out on some of the experience. Remember box art from the late 80s/early 90s? Totally ridiculous and often had nothing to do with the game. And there was no internet to look up a game to see what it was about. Buying a video game and playing it for the first time was a majestic experience that the VC, which favours impulse buying, can't really duplicate.

I think my most awe-striking gaming experience as a kid was Final Fantasy IV (then called Final Fantasy II). I had never played a RPG before and didn't really know anything about them. That's a wonder that you can really only experience once. After that, every new game is either "Oh, this is pretty cool" or "Ehh, this isn't very good."

Games are still fun of course, but that age of wide-eyed amazement and discovery is mostly over. With the internet and emulation and everything, the whole thing has become quite demystified.

I did actually play Link's Awakening back in the day, on a friend's borrowed game cart. I was six and never found the sword. Also for some reason the spinning teeth guys terrified me and I never went back to the beach again.

Apparently one of my friends beat Ocarina of time when he was six. I call lies to that!

I remember the original B&W Link's Awakening to be so amazing, I got it on Christmas and played it endlessly on our holiday trip to the States. I can honestly still see myself standing there at the airport or sitting in the rental car just playing on end. And when I had finally finished the game...I jumped right back in beginning from scratch. I beat the game 100% at least three times straight in a row, which is something I haven't done for any other game ever before or ever since.
...might replay it this holiday season in fact.

Collecting heart containers in Zelda is like playing it on easy mode. Just don't collect those heart containers.

Yep, those Game Gear games are awesome... The Mega Drive 3D classics will hit everything else out of the park

It feels good, although I've been playing classic games ever since I was little!

To me it feels like I get to live the childhood I never had because my parents dont like games. Btw, Donkey Kong gave me that first feeling, I played the Nes classics version on my gba (my first console and one of my first games)

Don't understand why anybody would have the need to find all those seashells more than once. (Even when you do it totally isn't worth it). 3 times is madness.

I did something similar with a Link to the Past but it is not stupid when it comes to collectables. (3 times in certainly less than a week including the very first).

I have only played Link's Awakening 100% once. Think I might have played through it a single second time.

The first playthrough took me a few months which is what I want from games nobody seems to make games like that these days though.

(People seem to desire stuff you just play for 15 hours over 2 days and it is over.)

Actually, you have to be at least 13 years old to have an account on here, so it's not like the Game Boy Color was too long ago. Everyone should know how it felt to play a good game on a Game Boy by now unless they were isolated from video games until some very recent point. However, it is surprising to see that only 10 years after the release of Link's Awakening, we had Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Legendary Starfy, Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, and Kirby Super Ultra Star. Who knows what will come in 2018? Well, according to Back to the Future, we wouldn't even need our hands to play video games. And that's not even two years away! So much for the tablet industry...

As far as GB/C games are concerned, it's a relief to not have to huddle beneath a lamp anymore, like I had to when I was a kid. The world of backlighting is wonderful.
