Topic: Gargoyle's Quest

This game is amazing, wanted to know what u guys think who may have purchased it today. It is said to have a steep learning curve, even in the first level. I haven't played it in years (!!!) but I have fond memories of it. So what are your impressions?

I was just flipping through an old Nintendo power to see what they thought of it.
They said it's pretty good but I noticed a mistake in the magazine's review.
They called it Gargoyles quest 2. I'm pretty sure the Gameboy game is the original.
The Nes game is the sequel.
Anyway I'm going to go ahead and get it. I've heard nothing but good things about it so might as well go for it.
I hope good sales might persuade Capcom to release the whole series.

For the past few hours, when I tried to reach the e-shop, I get an error code and it says "The e-shop is undergoing maintenance. Please try again later." Gee. Well, I would download Gargoyle's Quest, but... Why, on all days, would they want to have the e-shop down (on U.S. new download day) ?

They had a message about the update in the news section of the eShop for quite a while.
It's unclear whether this maintenance is just a standard sort of thing or if it's to prepare for the ambassador program or what, but considering there's one for the Wii Shop channel too, then it's probably nothing too important.

Ben... I didn't see this news update this morning when I logged into the shop, though... weird.

@Link79 I'm 99.9% sure I'm gonna download it, too. Just with the e-shop being down and all, I have to wait til later. Anyways, good idea about looking in past issues of Nintendo Power for reviews ,etc. I've also gone onto YouTube to see screenshots and videos of e-shop games before buying them (specifically VC games I've never played before but have been around awhile.) Thanks for sharing

I will be downloading this one as soon as the eShop is up and running again.

I won't download this, I already have the original cart version. But I would reccomend it to anyone with enough money in their eShop, it's very challenging and very fun.

Yeah it sure comes in handy having those old magazines. I somehow missed this game but it sounds like it'll be fun.
Once the shop is back up I'm gettin it.

I got the game in the morning, before they went into maintenance mode. Yay!

I haven't touched the game in a good 10years probably, had the cart back when it came out and held onto it for a lot of years. It's a fantastic game, challenge is a bit stiff, but it's not unfair exactly either, just not a lot of restore points at all. If you like the Ghosts n Goblins world moved into an action RPG style pre-Metroid3/SOTN type thing with no in game map, no actual xp, but items and gear to level up with then you should like it.

NintendoLife just gave this a 9/10 in their review today. And I totally agree with that rating. This is a fantastic game and needs to be played to be believed. Superior graphics, gameplay, replay value and difficulty curve. Go grab it!

Once again VC proves it's the place to find retro gaming delights!
Just because you haven't played it doesn't mean it isn't worth it.
Nothing like an old game that's new at the same time.
If Capcom sees good sales maybe they'll give us the Nes Sequel and the awesome Demon's crest.

I bought this yesterday because I missed out on this game as a kid... and wow.

It's games like this that make me glad that the Virtual Console exists in the first place. I probably would have never played this amazing game otherwise.

I've been wanting to play this game since I saw it in an issue of TOTAL! back in the early 90's.

Glad to finally get a chance to play it, had a little go and it's pretty damn good. I'll play more once I've finishd Link's Awakening

Well I just found out something interesting. The Nes sequel Gargoyles quest 2 was actually ported to the Gameboy but only in Japan. The one I was reading about in my old Nintendo power was not the gameboy original. It was the port that they never released in america. I was a little confused when the game in the magazine didn't look like the same game I was playing.
The world map looked totally different. Then I figured out the review was for the cancelled port of the Nes sequel.
Guess they cancelled it at the last minute because it was basically the same as the Nes game.
Glad I finally solved that mystery.

@Link79 They should totally re-release it for the 3DS VC, then! Seems like if Gargoyle's Quest is a big success on VC then it would be a wise business decision (licensing permitting) that Nintendo would want them to showcase the sequel, as well

Who knows but maybe We'll get the Nes version at least.
I hope Demon's crest might hit either the Wii or 3DS VC soon.
I'd be jumping for joy to finally get that legally.

Why would you think Capcom needs a license to release a game from a series that they themselves own?

Which issue are you looking at? There is a Game Boy version of the sequel, but it was only released in Japan. There was a North American Game Boy version, but it apparently got lost in the Ghoul Realm on its way to stores.
(NP reviewed it, they expected it to be released, but it was canceled with no explanation)
