Eventually, but they kinda remade them for the DS in Japan, so it'll be a while.
You're thinking of Final Fantasy Legends II & III, FFL1 hasn't been remade I believe and I don't think there's any chance Square Enix are gonna localise those DS games or put these games on 3DS VC.

It has, just not on any hardware available outside Japan. There was a WonderSwan Color remake (that included a port of the GB version as well) and a Japanese cellphone port of the WSC game.
FFL1 is decent, but the other games are better. I still really want them on the 3DS VC, though, as I hear they use similar mechanics to FFII, which is my favorite FF game up there with FFVI.

FFL2 is probably more what you're looking for. In FFL1 you have three classes: humans, who can only upgrade by buying stat-up items; mutants/espers, who randomly gain stats after battles but also have their skill list randomly altered as well; and monsters, who only get stronger by eating other monsters.
In FFL2, humans also gain stat points, and stat gains are based on what weapons you use.
The big difference from FF2 is that Legend 1/2 don't allow you to lose stat points, so you don't have to force your character to use weapons or spells specifically to keep their stats weighted.
Legend 3 though feels more like an FF game because it replaces the use-based stat gain system with a normal experience level system.

You'd probably like the entire SaGa series. They aren't very hard to get ahold of either, since most people consider them the worst RPGs out there (sound familiar?). For the record, though, I actually like most of the SaGa games. FFL1 and Unlimited SaGa are the worst of the bunch and probably the ones people played the most, which is part of why the series gets a bad rep. The rest are actually pretty impressive. They're flawed, but they're also very different, too. They're kinda like Sting games, in that they're both designed with creativity over functionality in mind.
^Yep. Actually, Sword of Mana (GBA) is a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure. That's the only Mana game I've played (the GBA one), and I really enjoyed it.

More like reimagining. The two have nothing in common as far as I can tell.
The "remake" thing is just what I've read on it. If they do have vast differences, that's just extra reason for me to buy FFA if/when it's released on eShop

FFL 1 - 3 and Adventures were amazing. I remember playing them towards the end of the GB life-cycle, post Pokemon, and still thinking "These are some good games". FFL1 was a bit glitchy but the whole story and idea was really good.

I was just looking at an eBay listing for FFL and almost bid on it. It ended up not selling (starting bid $9.99). I just couldn't decide on it although I was pretty sure I played those games back then.

I'd get all four of the Final Fantasy games on 3DS VC when they appear.
I wish the DS remakes of the GB SaGa games had been localised. They look good. I played a lot of FFL3 but did not complete it. Just got completely lost.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
