Topic: Avenging Spirit Impressions

I'm at level 3 and so far it's really fun! My only complaint is the you can tell it'll be pretty short...

I'm curious about this one too. Considering it's from Jaleco I'm not expecting much.
They don't exactly have the best track record for great games.
Is there anybody here who's played this before that could give their opinions?

Why is Nintendo releasing these lesser-known Gameboy titles as opposed to really popular ones? Copyright issues??

They're releasing lesser-known games because we still have quite a few years of 3DS lifespan, so no way they're going to put all the great games at once and then be left with nothing but lesser-known games for the duration.

But, Corbs... if they are looking to "boost" 3DS sales I would think now is better than later as far as releasing the more well-known titles on VC for 3DS. I actually have some friends that won't buy a 3DS because the VC games are kinda lacking. I think Nintendo has waited long enough. This price reduction is a sign that they are desperate for sales. Releasing more quality popular games for both the 3DSware and VC would only benefit them in the now. If they're only releasing one or two VC games per month then thats only 12 or 24 VC games a year! And there are so many they could release that would benefit them more easily.

I don't think the price reduction is an act of desperation but an attack on Sony.
They (Sony) are practically shoved into a corner and forced to also drop their price or face what happened to Nintendo ... but more so.

The game seems interesting and so far, 10 hours in, nothing really was said, is it that bad?

Nintendo is most likely more worried about 3DS sales right now, rather than the Vita, which is not even out and won't be for quite some time. They gotta get this system rolling and fast.

As for Avenging Spirit, it's a fun little game and one I still like to drag out of play from time to time.

They're releasing lesser known games because companies who want to release games for the 3DS only have lesser known games in their catalog.

Jaleco doesn't have any big name titles on the Game Boy to release but that isn't stopping them from releasing games.

The likes of Konami, Square and other fan-favorite companies aren't showing an interest yet with even Capcom only releasing two games in Japan so far (Rockman World and Red Arremer).

We have had a good showing from Nintendo so far. Still many well known games to release but the ones they have released have usually been good, with the only poor ones being some of their very earliest. They seem to adopting a "release all they can regardless of quality" approach so they're getting the early dated games out of the way first.

But you know, many Game Boy games are dated and are quite short and simple these days. The lengthy gems are actually very few. I can forsee many obscure releases like Avenging Spirit coming down the road, at least until a wider variety of handhelds and consoles are supported other than just the Game Boy.

I love it so far. The first levels are way too easy, but the final two are pretty brutal. The story makes no sense though. I though a mafia had kidnapped my girl. Why am I fighting strange monsters as bosses. It makes no sense. Furthermore, the game has some sort of cuteness that really doesn't suit the story. Like the appearance of your ghost or the music in the title screen. But I do like switching characters. Just wish more was done in terms of puzzles that only a certain character could solve or something.

Because they'd rather hang on to their franchises until the 3DS sells more units, and then more people might buy the games.

I thought this thread was about Avenging Spirit. Anyway I randomly decided to pick the game and damn - it's pretty good. It's short, and difficult, but a lot of fun. There's a ton of different enemies/characters which can really change your strategy and it's really good to be able to do all the cool stuff the enemy does!

I'm on stage 5 now and damn is it getting brutal. I believe I'm currently a nunchaku swinging Ninja...(thank you restore points!). Really good game and definitely worth £2.70. Also I saw some footage of the Arcade version and it looks like it would make an awesome 3D Classic(but I doubt that would happen).

Well I watched some youtube videos and it does look like a decent game.
I'm guessing Nintendolife will probably score it 7/10.
About how many stages are there?

6 if I'm not mistaken.

I'm reviewing this, but haven't played it yet. I've got a lot of time this weekend to devote to it, and I'm really looking forward to this one, so watch this space!

May I suggest watching the front page instead, occasionally refreshing? You may have better luck there than watching this space.

I can't believe how great this game is. I mean, I'm an old school gamer and never even heard of this when it was out when I actually owned a Gameboy and GBA, etc. I have to say that I am overly impressed with this game. Great graphics, sound, visuals, storyline, it's so unique and yet so dark and fun. Cartoonish look and feel but with dark overtones, if you catch my drift. Great game! I give it a 9/10 as far as Virtual Console titles go. Grab it today! The review is spot-on!
