Nintendo said that later, ambassadors can download "updated" versions of our NES games. I was thinking, why shouldn't these games be 3D Classics? All of the NES games seem to be likely choices for 3D and I can't see Nintendo not making Super Mario Bros be a 3D classic.

Probably because the only ones that would make sense to have in 3D would be Zelda 1, Golf, and maybe Metroid and Balloon Fight (but those are pushing it). What would 3D possibly add to the rest of them besides aesthetics?

Nintendo have already shown their reluctance to make 3D-Classics. The updates they have planned for the NES games are ones they planned for release, but would delay the games too much. These include a restore point feature and adding multiplayer (not just switching between a single system). I very highly doubt any 3D will be added to the games except for maybe an emulator foreground.
I'm almost disappointed they gave us some of these games as VC because I was hoping there would be 3D Classics versions of them we could purchase. I'm still holding out hope that some of these will become 3D Classics. If they're really not planning to make any of these as 3D Classics, then I fear they changed their minds about making as many 3D Classics as they initially suggested they would.
No, making a game into a 3-D classic would have to be a simpler game, which is why we see games like Urban Champion as a 3-D Classic. I've kind of figured out Nintendo's formula for this... it must be a very simple game with a limited amount of scenes that can be easily transformed into 3-D. They wouldn't make SMB a 3-D classic because of the huge variety of levels, that would take programmers FOREVER to turn into 3-D. Nintendo is only looking for simple games for this process which is why we have seen the mostly lackluster rollout that we've seen in that genre.

Well I really couldn't see 3D doing much to improve Excitebike or Urban Champion but those happened anyway.
@Grumble It may be possible they are releasing the games that are easier to make first since they didn't take as much production time. Besides, SMB doesn't seem much more complex than Twinbee and Xevious

From my experience with Excite Bike 3D, I'd be perfectly okay with Nintendo ditching the 3D classics idea altogether (save for whatever they already have done, of course.) I just don't see much value in 3D-ifying perfectly good classic games.
3D Classics should just be lumped together with Virtual Console games. They are the same retro games, just with some updated 3D effects. That doesn't merit a completely new classification.
