I love how coins pop up out of nowhere as a reward for doing weird things.. It's like a really weird reward for doing 'exploration', lol.
I just currently arrived at W4 with all Star Coins acquired in W1, W2 & W3. My Coin Count is at 19 578, I doubt I'll even try to go for the million myself. I've heard that all save files coins are combined though, so I might reach it at some point in time when replaying it.

I find running through the levels with a strict time limit and one life, trying to get as many coins as I can to try to beat my current record is one of the most enjoyable parts of the game and what really makes it stand out from the other New Super Mario Bros. games.

@Tech101 Haha I've only been playing for ten hours so far, and quite a bit of that was co-op with the other guy playing as Mario so I didn't even get any progress from that.
I've gotten to the end of world 6, but haven't spent any time going through everything to get all the Star Coins and everything yet.
One million coins shouldn't really take that long.
One round of Coin Rush takes about ten minutes and it's easy to get at least 10,000+ coins each time.
Would be playing more than I have been but have Uni work to do.

It just feel utterly pointless to me. Not my cup of tea, I'd rather have had some kind of a minigame collection like in the first game rather than Coin Rush tbh. I like to take my sweet time with the courses and enjoy them for what they are. But I've never been a fan of speed-running in any game.
I'm at 52,000 after less than 3 hours. :3 About 2:30.
Where is the spotpass thing btw to see how many coins everyone has? :3
