So it is a freemium stripped down version of the previous game?

Eh I'm pretty happy with the 3DS version, it was cheap and I love all the songs included, plus the ones I downloaded... Event stages are beautiful and the controls work flawlessly (a stylus is better to flick around with than my finger)

I was hoping that this would be something new, but I guess this is good for any final fantasy fanatic without a 3DS.

Well, it looks better on the iPad's Retina display than it ever did on the 3DS, and with a screen that large flicking around is far better than the stylus controls.

It's not stripped down in any meaningful way. It's just a case of you pay for what you actually want to own.

It's stripped down, sir. The Ipad screen is lame. It cannot compare to 3D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got Theatrhythm for 20 bucks and I'm pretty pleased with it. way better value from my point considering there are at least 30 songs on cart that I really enjoy. Plus I've downloaded a few. So for me 3DS is better. Anybody know if the iOS version has Darknotes? I'm assuming not. It's to bad if it doesn't because that was my favorite mode. The controls would undoubtedly be better though, no denying that.

Glad Enix has started opening up to other mobile platforms more. It's good for their sales, and i would have never gotten to play TWEWY if they hadn't. Fingers crossed they do this more, whats the point of limiting what consoles a game is on anyway? if it can be multiplatform, make it multiplatform. Opens the game to new audiences so more people get to play.

@Watz: It's not one of the better looking games ever made though. Its graphics are "cute" at best....
And, doing quick flicks with my finger on my iPad(1) is pretty had for me, I don't know if it's my fingers or my iPad but it generates a lot of friction.

By stripped down I meant... From the original post, the game sounds pretty much like "A little bit of... Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Chaos Shrine"... Not that that's a bad thing. (thought that "scores" thing got me curious, do they mean you can upload you scores as in "your highscore for a song" or "tap map designed by you to be played with a song"? if it's the second, then that's interesting.)

Don't worry, I'll totally download it if I can, just to have the two free songs on my iPad to play.

Really? I thought the art style was one of the best of the year, actually. :O

Eh, The playable characters were as interesting using the same paper doll in different outfits. The monsters on the other hand were pretty good.
The style is also way older than this year, it's completely taken from a 2009 phone Kingdom Hearts game, with added shading (which is a nice touch).

At this point I'm just gonna assume randomly hyped iOS ports are a sign of an SE game that (unfairly) didn't sell enough to make into a series or anything like that in order to make money.

this sounds like a better idea of a port since the only people who care about the game ever might not have bought it yet since it hasn't been out for like 4 years. Also the developer made Retro Game Challenge so I hope they see some money from this.

this does remind me that I still need to get this game.

Can't say I'm surprised after what happened with TWEWY. I can't really see this as a bad thing either, since I can see this working on iOS very easily. Not to mention it's great for people who just want to play a few songs.

Same. I don't think Square Enix will ever reveal anything good from these "teaser" sites.

I'm making a prediction right now that a teaser site for an iOS spinoff of FFXIII will be announced and released before we get even a vague release date for VS. XIII.

I demand bonus points if the teaser trailer for the iOS spinoff has no gameplay in it.

If it plays anything like Reverent Wings (which really needs a port to iOS), then I'll not lie, I would buy it.

Here in Australia Theatrhythm launched for $60.

Given that the iOS game costs the same here as it does in the US, the difference is far smaller.

Gotta be kidding.

Theatrhythm on the 3DS + all the DLC cost close a fortune too.

I believe there are about 48 DLC songs available right now. The retail price of TFF is $40 plus 1.07 per song which adds up to..... 95.54 total. Still less than the supposed total of the app version plus i'm imagining it controls a lot better on 3DS. 3DS still looks like the way to go. Although the composition mode sounds really cool. Maybe we can get an update for it on 3DS? Or I'd even welcome a Wii U port with everything from IOS and 3DS plus anything else they wanna pile on.

So having played with this on the iPad for a few hours here's the realities:

1) It plays just as well as the 3DS game. I will never understand why people think replacing a stylus with a finger somehow makes a game worse for a touch-screen only game, but whatever, people love to try and justify their manias. It plays fine.

2) The composition mode is really awesome, and is more than enough reason to download it and play it again. It adds a whole heap to the experience.

3) Downloading the music I like (and you can preview tracks in this version before buying them, a step up from the 3DS game), and the characters I like has set me back about $20. Now, because I have the 3DS game I've only downloaded my favourite tracks here, the ones I want to replay, but I love how people flip out about microtransactions costing "too much" because buying EVERYTHING is more expensive than the retail release. Just don't buy everything. Problem solved.

4) It looks better on the giant iPad retina screen.

5) Though this game doesn't have the "event scenes" music tracks, it has turned those music tracks into normal field tracks. So yes, Suteki Da Ne is still in the game.

All up there's a couple of trade offs made here, but the additions and the natural strengths of the iPad make it the superior versions. Dunno about the iPhone version, haven't bothered playing it on that.

Having played the demo on the 3DS the other week, I was thinking to myself how much easier it would be to play the game on my android's Capacitive screen. The tiny 3DS stylus kept slipping off my fingers when the game gets hectic. Glad I held off, I'll be sure to get this once it eventually hits the android market. But individual DLC purchases for songs? I'll wait for a discounted package if ever, I kinda like having the complete package.
