I just noticed that there was an update available for Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. Just downloaded it, but I have no idea what it actually does. Also, I got the Monado Theme for free as a gift for preordering the game. It looks very cool.
Newcomer to what? JRPGs in general or just this "series"?
For JRPGs in general, I'd say it's fairly accessible. Although my advice for everyone looking to get into JRPGs is always start with Final Fantasy 9 as it's one of the best in the genre whilst also being the simplest.
As for this "series", they're completely unconnected. This has no relation to Xenogears of Xenosaga except some common themes.
I superduperwuvyduvy love this game. I really can't remember the last new (to me) franchise I got into. I couldn't be happier that Nintendo re-released this on 3DS, it's been my only next-gen Nintendo console and it's been doing an absolutely superb job, I haven't needed a Wii U yet and probably won't pick it up until the sequel comes out...
I've watched a couple of walkthrough videos on Youtube to understand more about the battle system and Arts and Gem crafting and all this stuff and I keep being amazed by the incredible graphics, the color, I see what people say about the colors, they are so gloriously unique, the red, blue and green all look sensational and for some reason so very unique. I've never been one to need "good graphics" to enjoy games at all but that artstyle has captivated me like no other game....well since Wind Waker was released when I was 13.... I'm tempted to drop over $100 on ebay on the Wii game to experience it on console but I guess I can get my fix of HD Xenoblade when the sequel comes out. I hope it lives up to peoples expectations.
I played it for 3/4th of an hour and was a little bit shocked by the graphics.
I mean I am not a graphics nazi, but compared to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate they are really disappointing to me.
So far I have to get used to the combat system, but it seems allright.
I like the story and voice acting so far.
Looking forward to continuing this afternoon. =]

How good is the 3D? Is it the nice, deep 3D you see in MH4U, or do tiles just pop out of the screen?

It's not as deep as MH4U but honestly it's not that bad as some have been saying. I've seen far worse and would say it's some where in between. Not deep but it's definitely noticeable.
There's just something about having this game in the palm of my hands that just feels right. It looks good but there is definitely a noticeable color drop. Other then that it looks pretty true to the console version. It has been a while since I played the console version so I may have blinders on.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.

I'm running two saves simultaneously on the Wii version and this one and I agree with you so I don't think you have blinders on.
Speaking of 'on', the 3D isn't mind blowing or anything but I have it on most of the time. I think it just about justifies it itself in my opinion.

Makes sense. MH4U was developed specifically for the 3DS, after all, while this is just a port. To be honest, though, DKCR3D had some really nice 3D, so maybe that is a better game to compare it with in terms of what it is capable of?
My time at home is very limited. Between school, work, and family responsibilities, my free time to just mess around with a home console is pretty much restricted to nighttime, and that doesn't give me much time before I need to rest. Even though I own the Wii version, that makes some gigantic console JRPG pretty inaccessible to me right now. As such, a handheld version is VERY attractive to me. I'll deal with slightly worse textures to gain portability and not having to mess around with the nightmare that is the Wii's controller options (even the Classic Controller sucks).
I've been seeing/reading about different people's reaction to the disappointing graphics. But then I read how some people are saying they're not that bad.

I think they just mean they look better on the big screen, which...I guess I can see why. But, I dunno. lol
