This guy is an outlier (and an idiot), nearly every other listing with just the console is going for $400-$500. Y'all complain about that but I'm still without that Hatsune Miku vita I've been wanting forever because the listings for that go from $500 used and up to 1,800 new.

I don't get it. Apart from being a limited edition, the majora 's mask 3ds looks freaking ugly. The red XL is the real beauty of the bunch. Which is why I got it

What if there was an entire lake of water- enough that everyone could drink. But half the people buy up the lake and start charging $1000 a bottle of water. Would you say "oh well it's supply and demand"? I would hope not.

The issue here is also that this is not isolated anymore. It's gotten to the point EVERYONE wants to leech every last red cent they can from others- fair prices be damned.

If I had a bottle of water an you were thirsty, would it be "ok" for me to charge you the clothes off your back and sell you into slavery simply because I know the demand is high because you're dying of thirst?

Yeah, see, the thing is that people need water to survive. People cannot live without it. So, yes, withholding a basic necessity of life in order to make more money would be immoral.

Your continued life, I'm happy to report, is not dependent on owning a Majora's Mask New 3DS XL. Heck, even your well-being isn't dependent on it. It's a pure luxury. It's not even like you need that system to reap the benefits of owning a New Nintendo 3DS XL. It's purely a cosmetic thing.

I see no problem with more enterprising individuals selling it for as much as they can get for it. Nothing immoral about that. Supply and Demand, as others have said. It is harming nobody.

If Nintendo wouldn't produce highly-sought-after consumer goods in such ridiculously low quantities, we probably wouldn't be having these issues.

The problem is that those who want these limited edition things often assume they're hard to get as soon as Amazon or the manufacturer doesn't offer it on the site anymore, whic his exactly the moment scalpers wait for. They exploit the ambition to own something unique (welll, somewhat at least) by charging high prices right away, motivating other owners of the item to raise their expectations as well. And this causes a chain reaction across the board:

  • step 1: people who seek a limited item see it for a high price
  • step 2: they also see (in case of ebay) that many people are "watching" that same item
  • step 3: seekers see that other offers are even more expensive
  • step 4: the first thing they think is "gotta get the cheapest one of these, this might be my last chance" and bid on the item
  • step 5: resellers notice the increase and manipulate their own price stakes by placing higher bids through secondary accounts (or friends)
  • step 6: return to step 3; rinse and repeat

It's not much of a "supply and demand" issue, but more of a manipulative cycle that makes people believe they want it as long as they can afford the thing. The real "demand" doesn't go beyond trying to snag the item for a reasonable (i.e. original) price. People going for these ludicrous offerings are more desperate to have a status symbol than a handheld, since there's a limit to how much one should treasure looks over functionality (an issue that degenerates the gaming business as a whole, but that's a different topic).

What I'm trying to say here is that too few people ask themselves in all honesty: "Is THAT really worth THIS price to me?", instead being practically blinded by the shiny surface that hides something very regular inside. In the case of the Majora's Mask N3DSXL, it's very obvious that it doesn't offer any functionality that a regular N3DSXL would lack, and it boils down to approximately 5$ worth of golden paint. Yes, it's not that easy to measure the value of it, but that's the basic rundown.
But would it really break your neck to get a regular N3DSXL and then get some cover sticker of the mask on etsy or similar sites (or do it yourself)?

If you make millions a year, is it really wasting money anymore than a normal person buying for the normal price if they are big fan and already have a 3DS?

I'm not trying to say that rich people can't afford to lose amounts of money that would seem trivial to them.

Babie's post said "there's a sucker born every day".

If some hypothetical rich person is buying an hypothetical 3DS being sold for 10000 dollars just because it would mean nothing to them, then they're still that "sucker" she's talking about.

I wanted the Majora`s Mask XL but I ain't willing to pay more than $229.99 plus tax for the thing. I am hoping that maybe just maybe that there might be another special edition released when XC3D comes out, because I am not getting one until at least April anyways.

Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Finished the Alola Dex.

Everything seems so backwards in this thread.

It's not eBay sellers who are the problem, it's the buyers. If somebody is fast enough and smart enough to buy something before everyone else and sell it for more money good for them. It's the American way, robber barons are the heroes of US history.

And people paying exhoribant prices for videogame consoles probably aren't as stupid as the people who give them the money to do so. A-Rod will make $20 million this year to sit on a bench. Carmelo Anthony - of the 10-45 Knicks - is being paid $22 mil to recover from knee surgery. He can afford a $10k 3DS for every room in his house while he sits around recovering the next few months. I'd bet most of these go to athletes and unconvicted white collar criminals - think Wall street, hedge fund manners, CEOs, etc. Maybe Mark Cuban is buying them all for members of the Mavericks? And you just know Mark Zuckerberg owns one or two.

Sucks for those of us who would like to buy things at MSRP though.
