I I'm enticed by it, but would it even be a good gaming handheld or phone....I smell a boat-load of airtime data charges.

Nope. Too specialized, hardware power just can't compare with 3DS, people who own a PSP will not want to buy another PSP anyway.

Yes, the PSP is weaker than the 3DS.

A phone and handheld console in one, ummmmm yeah. Am I the only one who remembers the fiasco that was the Ngage? Of course I cant blame others if they forgot about it.

No. The reason is that the PSPhone use Android, a mobile OS that's very, very light and it's not ver usefull for big games (unless the 3.0 version can handle it).

Umm, iPhone? Or are you one of those people that pretend there are no games on the iPhone worth playing?

Why on earth would anyone think the PSP Phone would be a competitor for the 3DS? Clearly it's more gunning the Apple iPhone market.

And will it succeed? I think so. Sony's built some pretty good momentum behind its Ericsson brand (as phones, they're better than the iPhone, in fact), it's already got a strong online games platform in the PlayStation Network, and unlike the iPhone, it's offering buttons.

And if it is an Android OS as promised... well, that OS is doing some huge business these days.

I can't say for sure the PSP Phone will succeed, but it is bringing together a lot of very high quality brands.

I kind of thought that as a possibility.......Wow I did not know someone tried it before Apple.

Very true...

They actually are, I read an article on N4 that was talking about it.....But didn't make it clear that it was going to be a phone exactly.

Depends, really
You can't say whether it's gonna be a success or not based on photos and a few unconfirmed specs. If the software's there, there might be a chance for it. If it's linked to PSN properly and lets you download minis and stuff then they might get some serious sales from the Sony crowd.
You never know! It'll definitely be better than the iProducts for gaming, but there's very little chance it can compete with the 3DS.

True, I'd definitely like it more than a iPhone.....Hopefully it would have the ability to switch off the mobile when not needed and use WiFi, to reduce charges and it would be cool if it can be used through WiFi as a phone, such as like an iPhone can work through Vonage.

Depends what's in the store and if it has access to the actual PSN store.
If I can play God of War on that....Mmmmmm Or NIS games...Ahhhhh

Also hardware wise, aside from a dedicated graphics card, like most cell phones out today, it's specs blow the 3DS out of the water.

Time will tell in the end. We need to know more about the stores and cost, but if it has PSN and cost the same as the X10, then I think it'll be a hit.

Also I think it would me more competing with mobile device, though it'll obviously compete with 3DS in some form when it's released.

Oh and battery life!

Bingo. Among other things, the low battery life did a number on the N-Gage, and made playing games on it more of a pain than anything else. Really, they were trying way too many things before the technology and processes were ready for it. If the battery life's good, and everything else functions, it's possible it could stand a chance out there on the market.

Yeah they are....Actually some of Sony's phones in the past were a little clunky...

I agree, battery life is crucial. Even for the non gaming phones. My little Samsung Two Step, easily has 2 days of battery life but when my sis gets a hold of it, its dead within a few hours. She text pics and everything.

Actually I am not that all fimiliar on wht the iPhone can and cant do. So I wouldnt know how it works with games. I do know that the Ngage was the biggest flop in headheld Consoles in history and the fact that it was a bad phone too makes it even more of a flop.

I also think it would be more a competitor with Apple.

If it offers the sort of gaming a PSP offers now (or what a next gen PSP would offer), that would be a pretty awesome little device. The real question is what apps/minis would be on there. Would you be able to download any Droid app, or would you only be able to download from PSN? If you could integrate both somehow in an easy to use fashion, it'd be killer. If they only offer the PSN store, you'll lose a lot of "casuals" or "grownups" who get smart phones to be phones/pdas/etc. first and gaming devices second.

The question would be price. New iPhones retail in the range of $600-$1000 USD (based on Hong Kong prices). A phone small enough to be a phone with that sort of gaming potential would be exorbitant. In the States, they'd get partnered up with a plan to retail between $200-$300 with the rest of the cost built into a 2 year contract. Still, the plans would have to be more expensive than an iPhone plan to cover that.

Integrating phone technology at this point is expensive and battery sucking. An iTouch starts at $230 - compare that to the retail iPhone prices. My iPhone also sucks up way more battery than my Touch did. I can only imagine if they decided to add on a UMD drive too!

It could carve a nice little niche like the PSP did. I don't see it squashing out the rest of the Droid/iPhone market, because most people don't want to play PSP type games on the go. Stuff like Angry Birds or Bejeweled hold them over on their commute or while waiting at the doctor's office, and they work just fine on any other smartphone. The 3DS will have it's niche as the gaming-only handheld for those who don't want/need a smartphone. The cheap option, if you will (I really cannot see it selling well in the US for $300, especially after the first couple months when the fanboys already all have one).

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.
