Hey there everyone. With all the talk about OoT for the 3DS there has been no mention of a brand new Zelda title on the 3DS. Obviously there will be at one point, and the Zelda team seems to have their hands full finishing up Skyward Sword (who knows when its coming..) but when we get a new Zelda on 3DS do you think Nintendo will scrap Toon Link for good (considering he's lived on through the handhelds) or will we continue to live side by side with Adult Link?

Or is this the end of top-view (like spirit track for example) games in general? I don't think so.

Here is what Aonuma had to say:
IGN: With two Zelda games now in the works -- Skyward Sword and Ocarina of Time 3D, and both of them using an older, more realistic Link -- do you think we've seen a brief retirement of the Toon Link character? Or will we see Toon Link again pretty soon?
Aonuma: We haven't made a specific determination about what's going to happen with Toon Link. As we talked about earlier, I think the toon-shading style worked really well with The Wind Waker because it was a story of a young Link. So if we did something again with a Link at that age, maybe we'd re-use it. Who knows? If we're going forward, looking to adapt Link to a new piece of hardware, maybe we'd want to bring him to life again with the technology that'd be available then. I can't say -- I don't even want to say that he's retired. I just don't know.
And another thing I just thought of is that for Twilight Princess we made a more realistic Link, but with the fantasy realm if the art style is too realistic it really narrows down what you can do and still feel like what you're doing still fits within that world. I want to make sure that some of the crazier elements still fit within the game world, and aren't breaking that world view -- so sometimes it's better not to be so realistic. Sometimes we need that exaggeration to implement the elements that are more outlandish and could only fit within the realm of fantasy. I think there are a lot of games out there that are super-realistic, and I've never felt that Zelda really fits into the same category as those games.

Umm, even though the current Zelda games being developed are not using Toon Link, that doesn't mean that they will never use him again.

I don't care who they use. Bring back the overworld style of handheld Zeldas!

I wish they would go for a more realistic approach for Zelda. Aonouma rightly says there are are a lot of super-realistic games out there, but none of them are made by Nintendo.... I would like to see them scrap toon link and continue the OOT / Twillight Princess root.

If Toon Link is coming back, I want a new design (outside of Four Swords).

Nahh I would rather see a OOT/MM/TP style in my opinion it makes more realistic from the view.

Hopefully scrapped. Toon Link has been overused already, as is the whole over simplistic style of toon Zeldas. Time to move forward (and Skyward Sword seems to be on right tracks).

Why do you want a fantasy game to look realistic?

All 3D Zeldas root in the design of OoT. But nearly all of the post-OoT ones go for something different, Majora's Mask being the exception, even though the plot itself was from what I heard pretty dark. Wind Waker and Skyward Sword obviously go for a more cartoony style (Wind Waker especially), while Twilight Princess is grittier than Batman (not the Adam West one. though that shark scene was INTENSE). Ocarina of Time itself is kind of... neutral. I hope that the next 3D Zelda after Skyward Sword has that feel.

In the view I feel more like I am Link, not knowing what is around the next turn. While looking above gives away the felling of being their also it does not give a really spooky feeling. EDIT: It also can make me feel like the bosses are really big compared to the birds eye view.

I always feel spooked because I'm a bad gamer, it doesn't matter if I know what's around the next corner.

I prefer "Toon Link" 90% on a scale of 1 to 100%. I also like the anime style of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
I wasn't a major all in and out Zelda fan before the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Minish Cap. It was because of The Wind Waker and Minish Cap that I became a full time Zelda fan. I think Nintendo knows and understands that the anime/ cartoon styles of Wind Waker and Skyward Sword are key elements in drawing in a vast audience and will continue to utilize those styles from time to time. I also think that The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is one of the best Zelda games hands down.
I also think that anime and hanna barbera cartoonish styles of Zelda: Skyward Sword, The Minish Cap and The Wind Waker are perfect fit for a medieval fantasy RPG which is why i enjoy things like Square Enix's Final Fantasy Tactics, Nippon's Disgaea, NEXON's Dragon Nest and Ankama's Wakfu/ Dofus franchise.

Toon Link won't be scrapped. At some point, they might make a Toon Link game on the 3DS, but not for a while. The question is if they want to go down the route of Phantom Hourglass and Sprit Tracks with the touch screen gameplay or The Wind Waker with its broad exploration. I never did play any of the cartoony Zeldas, but once I do, I should have a lot more clear view about where this should go.
