I would normally prefer to wait until the library develops, I'll be getting a 3DS as soon as I can because all I have right now is a DS Lite with a broken hinge, it still works, but the top part is just really floppy which is annoying.

The only con that really seems convincing to me is the fear that the first generation will have some sort of devastating bug, but surely if they somehow screwed that up they'd just send a patch or get you all fixed up somehow wouldn't they?
Other than that it just seems to be a matter of if you have the money or not. I'll probably get it so we can finally have two DS's to play multiplayer together and I'll just buy the good looking games as they gradually come out. I'm not scared of any upgrades to the console itself, it doesn't seem like having an original DS still is such a bad thing compared to its other versions.
The only thing that worries me is how long it might take to get your hands on one if you don't preorder, what do you think?

this is true. I was gonna get a Wii for Christmas 06 but couldn't get it until 3-4 months later. And I was looking for the console at least once a week too.
To me, the whole issue of waiting or not comes down to economics. If you can afford it, why not? Myself, I don't have the money to put towards a new handheld just yet so my choice to wait is out of necessity than choice. I would love to be able to buy a system day one, but due to how I have to budget out my income, I've always had to wait tell a price drop or a good deal to buy a new system. I don't think in my entire history as a gamer I've bought a system day one.
I'm looking at buying a 3DS on Day one. Though I'm holding off on preordering until we actually find out more on Jan 19th.
I still have a backlog of games I'm working through so if it takes a bit for me to get a 3DS I don't mind waiting a little bit and having it show up a few months later. I think it's cool that you can pre-order right now at some places but I'd rather wait until I can pre-order what color I'd like.

I have a (somewhat broken, but still playable) DS Lite and I think the first version of the 3DS is the perfect moment to buy it. I will buy it straight away. I won't buy the 2nd version.
After that there are 2 possible scenarios: 1. Buy the 3rd version 3DS, don't buy the 1st version of 3DS successor, buy the 2nd version of 3DS successor. 2. Don't buy 3rd version 3DS, buy 1st version of 3DS successor, don't buy 2nd version of 3DS successor.
If my calculations are correct, the 3DS has a high probability of being released in the last week of March, Aka, my spring break. My mind just imploded...

this entire post sounds exactly like my thoughts. I'll be very busy until June anyway, and I'm actually starting to lean towards waiting for summer. I just hope stores are restocked and it's no issue finding one.
