I've been asking myself the same question for a while now. It did take a long time for the DSi to come after the first DS so I would say yes, but who am I to say? If there are some good games at launch I don't see why not to get it!

I don't believe I'm going to get one straight outta the gate. Nintendo has a bad habit of releasing a handheld and then putting out the SUPER NEW AND IMPROVED! version a few months later, leaving you with a clunky old dinosaur to play on. I'm really excited about some of the games for it though. Icarus, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Gameboy games, and possibly improved online functioning seal the deal for me, but I'm probably gonna wait.
There are few benefits to being an early adopter. If you wait then the price of the system and/or its games may drop, the game library will be larger, bugs and flaws will be found, support will improve and firmware updates or hardware revisions will be released. There are no benefits for preordering it - no limited edition devices, free 3DS Point Cards or discounts that we are aware of. AFAIK there are no real disadvantages to waiting on it.
How often do Nintendo systems have bugs in them? Let's see...oh right! Never
Wii disc read failure, inability to copy/backup certain save files (networked games), DS Lite hinge cracks, circuit board microfractures, non-responsive L and R triggers and the inability to transfer WiiWare/VC/DSiWare titles are some of the recent ones I'm aware of.
Oh, and this. Apparently his Wii's GPU got fried and it started rendering pixelated artifacts all over the screen.
Oh the non responsive triggers better be gone they were on my lite and my dsi(but work after you press them a few times) i hope they are gone on the 3ds

Y'know, I'm really excited for its release but I'm not sure if I'm going to get it straight away or not. Price and launch titles mean everything at this point, as many have said. I definately think it'll be a musthave, just maybe not in the first year.

More than half of those weren't even bugs. Besides, there are these things called "duds" in the electronics business

I'm buying one on launch day because my DS lite is almost completely unusable -- the hinge is cracked and the shoulder buttons are unreliable. I don't know when or if Nintendo would release an upgrade, and even if they did there's a pretty good chance it would only be an XL version that's 50 bucks more expensive.
