I want to buy this 3ds because i need another hand held gaming device.. however i am afraid to buy it, I have a habit of buying things at the end of their time, then another newer model comes out... So I know nothing about nintendo, honestly played the games when i was younger but now i want to again, and i just want to make sure i still have a year before nintendo releases something newer then the 3ds XL, thanks
I dont think you have to worry about the next gen handheld for awhile. The 3DS is strong in its sales and have some great games out already and more to come.

I would expect the 3DS to be Nintendo's primary series of handhelds for at least another 3 years. Perhaps even longer, if the DS' incredible lifespan is anything to go by.
The 3DS has really only started hitting its stride recently, in both sales and quality software, and it's unlikely that Nintendo would be willing to blow that all up any time soon in order to introduce new hardware, especially with the way the Wii U has been struggling.
EDIT: Nintendo will undoubtedly release another 3DS model at some point, but I wouldn't sweat that either. The XL is a perfectly fine representation of the platform as it is.
Thanks for your fast replies and my lord do the game choices look great i can't wait!, is there a time frame for the model change after the 3ds xl or is that still confirmed but the time frame isn't? i always like the newest model
Edit: For example if say the new model was a month or two away I wouldn't have a problem waiting for the new and improved 3ds xl
Nintendo has said nothing about new 3DS models - personally, I don't think there'll be anything after the XL. Can't see where else they can go besides giving it a facelift, but the XL is a fantastic bit of kit, so I would highly recommend it. If you don't already own a 3DS or 3DS XL, I'd suggest buying one because, really, what guarantee is there that there'll be another model - and you could miss out on years' worth of amazing games if you do decide to wait, which I don't think would be a good idea.

There is no official word about a new model so if there is one then it won't come out this year or even early next year. At the earliest maybe holiday 2014 but I think Nintendo will be focusing more on the Wii U by then
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Maybe a 3ds XL lite! haha, thanks so much guys the community here at nintendo is kinder then most, i have 1 final question and once again thanks for your fast replies so far, my question is do you guys believe they will mention something about future 3ds xl revision at gamescom in august?
In terms of a new model of the 3DS, there could be in the future, though I can't see it happening for a while and I don't really know what they would do. It used to be all about making stuff smaller, but now it seems that big is the new small when it comes to handheld devices and I can't see them making a 3DS XXL. But potential future re-designs shouldn't put you off from purchasing now otherwise you could be playing stick or twist forever.
In terms of an actual successor to the 3DS, I think the 3DS has a good 3 years left, based on Nintendo's usual console life-spans and the fact that it's in a pretty comfortable position with its immediate competitor posing no real threat. They won't want to make a new console if they don't have to.
As others have said, I don't see the 3DS being taken out for another 3-4 maybe 5 years at maximum. As for revisions, they will undoubtedly release a new model eventually, but I don't think that'll be any time soon, besides it would most likely be cosmetic changes anyway.
I think it would be best if you buy a 3DS now really, there's plenty of triple A titles out there right now for you to play and there's plenty more on the horizon. I don't see the 3DS game library slowing down any time soon if I'm honest.
Don't worry about what might or might not be happening in the future and put off what would be for a could be that may never materialise. If you like the current 3DS models and are happy with the asking price buy it now and have a blast!
I don't think nintendo has ever made hardware announcements at gamescom, though i could be wrong on that. There might be a revision sometime in the future but that's most likely a few years away and i really can't see what improvements nintendo could make to the hardware that would justify a revision. So i say buy it now.
All we can go by are by the regularity in dates of previous launches:
Nintendo DS - 04
Nintendo DS Lite - 06
Nintendo DSi - 09
Nintendo DSi XL - 09
Nintendo 3DS - 11
Nintendo 3DS XL - 12
Reflecting on the time frame which surrounds these last two iterations:
The rapidity at which Nintendo was able to engineer a new model is surprising in the case of the 3DS XL - my instinct might be to feel cheated at the sudden turnover. However, upon consideration it seems there were many positives to be found, countered in turn by some innate advantages in the original unit. As a result consumer choice was advantaged, as larger screens improved the viewing angle but also enlarged the dimensions of the original.
These swift adjustments were likely spurred on by a desire to assuage the sea of doubts left in the wake of an underwhelming launch; with the introduction of a second model into the wild, consumer interest could revive and thrive, ultimately.
I'd say you've got at least two or three years until Nintendo even considers a new handheld video game console to replace the 3DS. Don't worry about it.
There will be a new handheld that comes out. But as far as when, it will be a few years.
They could come out with something like the 3DSXXL but I don't really see that happening and would not get a lot of sales due to people not wanting to buy another version of the same system, I still have my Origional Xbox 360, got it a week after It came out and only had ta send it in once ta get it fixed.
