All thanks to the real time shadows, and not......circles. lol

That looks amazing.

It does? Other than the character models it looks like bland hallways with a few random boxes lying about, some pixelated messes of colour that is meant to represent blood or dirt or whatever, and some terrible water effects.

It looks just like Mercs then!

But hey, lots of polygons right?

This is a better show of Revelation's graphics

I don't think Resident Evil is even pushing as many polygons as other 3DS games, it's about the use of lighting and shader effects and also the small touches like how you can see the steam coming from Chris' mouth when he breathes. Resident Evil has an unmatched level of detail on the 3DS, although I personally prefer the look of Beyond the Labyrinth. I'm not with you on this one Waltz... especially when you point to this as an example of good graphics.

Kind of like Resident Evil 4 and 5?

People are getting their expectations way too high with the 3DS. They expect it to push high end PC-quality graphics, yet it wasn't designed to do that.

The Vita has much more powerful tech in it, it's like a portable PS3. That's because it was designed to output that level of graphics. The 3DS isn't anywhere near PS3 quality, yet the games can still look good if the artists work around the hardware's limitations.

Uncharted Golden Abyss for Vita looks okay. That game has blurry pixelated textures too. RE Revelations is on par

Anyhow.. games tend to look better towards the middle and end of their life span before their successor rolls in.

Edit: Just to say- Lego Star Wars III looks closer to the 360 version than the Wii version with real time shadows, self-shadowing, shading- some neat effects and the lighting.

MH3G appears to have self shadowing too. It's something you see better on the 3DS screen itself. And I have Lego Star Wars III and my bro has it for 360, so it was easy to compare. It doesn't look exactly, at all, but they did a good job of giving it that "fake next gen look".. or what you want to call it.. maybe not fake... but that's what developers said.. they can make games appear to be on par with 360 in looks.. or something..

The bolded isn't anywhere close to true but yeah even PS3/360 games have blurry textures in places.

Ergh, you're right. That is ugly as sin.

I wasn't following the game that closely, since I have no interest in buying it. Love Plus 3DS then, can be my new example of good graphics.

Silly, pointless topic then. People should judge graphics on the aesthetic value of the game, rather than an arbitrary number that means nothing, since graphics only exist to look good, and there are PS3 games well beyond the ability of the 3DS that look terrible.

Just so I can say I agree with WaltzElf on something today

The original Super Maio Bros is one of the best looking games ever. It "looks better" than a lot of modern games and it looks so good that I'd happily zoom right into a screenshot of the game, print it out, frame it and hang it on my wall as art. Not only that but I could do that AND not have people think I am crazy for saying it looks good. In a similar way Kirby's Epic Yarn is one of the better looking "modern" games out there and I think people would agree with me if I said the same thing about games like Muramasa: The Demon Blade or Limbo.

Lower tech "art" is better looking than high tech garbage.... unless you're after that horrible looking game look because it's all subjective.

edit: oh, and I'm putting my word in for Kid Icarus Uprising as the best looking 3DS game so far

Yeah, I'm not sold on Kid Icarus' gameplay, but the art direction is peerless.

@Skywake

Super Mario Bros. 3 looks better than the original Super Mario Bros. The art style is defined, and it's easy to make out the different characters and enemies. Super Mario World is a step above SMB3, it's just more colorful and crisp.

Technically superior but not visually superior IMO. You wouldn't be as quick to hang them on your wall...... SMB on the other hand

Yeah, exactly. Super Mario Brothers, the original, is a work of freaking art. Every bit of that game features near-perfect art direction.

From what I remember of my short play of it all those months ago it controls ridiculously well. I'm not completely sold on the ground sections, I'm not sure how well the stylus/circle pad controls will work for longer play sessions and it was the first time I played anything on the 3DS..... but the flying stuff was brilliant and I walked away from that demo wanting a 3DS purely for Kid Icarus.

After playing Super Mario 64 DS and Ocarina of Time 3D quite extensively on my 3DS, I think the circle pad works very well with these types of games.

No not the circle pad itself, the circle pad/stylus dual analogue setup. It was very comfortable and very intuitive when I tried it out but I'm not sure how well it would work for longer play sessions...... given I never played Metroid Prime: Hunters

I love that scene in Kid Icarus Uprising. It sort of reminds me of that scene in Smash Bros Brawl in Subspace Emissary when the Ancient Island blows up and nothing is left so the sun shines through and forms an X.

I'm a sucker for majestic scenery :3

Metroid Prime Hunters played fine (sorta, it had the problem of always having to take the stylus off the screen to turn around, in a similar way that makes me hate PC gaming), but holding the thing with one hand can be tiresome. The Dual analogue redesign can't come soon enough.
