It’s pretty obvious actually. If you looked at the past, you would see that Pokémon Emerald came out in 2005, one year after the DS did (2004). The 3DS came out this year (2011), so in late 2012, Pokémon Gray will come out for Japan, and in March 2013, it will come to America. So basically, all the generations of Pokémon are tied to one system and that system only.
Gen 1 -> Game Boy Gen 2 -> Game Boy Color Gen 3 -> Game Boy Advance Gen 4 -> Nintendo DS Gen 5 (I'm sure) -> Nintendo DS.
Game Freak won’t have to worry about sales. It’s a freaking core Pokémon game, for crying out loud. Pokémon Emerald is the third best-selling game for the Game Boy Advance at 6.32 million copies. Not bad for a really late GBA game. And I’m sure that Pokémon Gray will sell 7+ million, with how Pokémon is still popular to this day. I mean, put Pokémon on any handheld, and it will be selling like hotcakes.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill

Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
I doubt Pokémon Gray/Grey will even exist for this very reason, to be honest. We might get Ruby/Sapphire remakes - if we do, they'll be on 3DS - but otherwise I think we'll see the sixth generation on 3DS sooner rather than later.
Gray is a very dull color. The Pokemon formula is getting very dull.
I want something new. Something fresh, something we've never seen before and something that is unexpected. Something that, the Pokemon name can benefit from.

Nobunaga's Ambition X Pokemon There ya go.
That was unexpected, but it's just a crossover with another very "dull" gameplay formula.
Because maintaining an only vaguely accurate pattern is far more important to Nintendo than shifting hardware units.
Pokémon Gray will be on 3DS.
Just to clarify something: Game Boy and Game Boy Color games came in three flavours:
Game Boy Original - worked on both systems, had a basic two-color palette added when played on a Game Boy Color (which could be changed on the boot screen by pressing a directional key)
Game Boy Hybrid - worked on both systems. Had an advanced pallet when loaded into Game Boy Color, but pallete switching is not possible.
Game Boy Color Only - Only playable on Game Boy Color (had clear game carts)
Pokémon Red and Blue were Game Boy Original titles. Pokémon Yellow, Gold and Silver were Game Boy Hybrid. Pokémon Crystal was Game Boy Color Only.

Pokemon x Samurai Thing (can't remeber what it was called) was pretty unexpected.
