Rubicon Development, the makers of the self-funded iOS title Great Little War Game, have revealed to Develop Online that the studio received Vita development kits free of charge from Sony.

Rubicon reportedly received four Vita dev kits to bring Great Little War Game to Sony's new handheld. Steven Haggerty of Rubicon told Develop Online that Sony seems to be stepping its game up in terms of getting developers on board with Vita. "We've worked with Apple, and you can't get anything out of them. Microsoft rarely responds and I suppose Nintendo are okay, but Sony are always there to help. They always get back to you."

Those Sony kits are on loan, incidentally — they're not Rubicon's to keep.

Do you have a link to that? Even so, it's a pretty big gesture to the 3rd party developers. What is Nintendo doing to lure in 3rd party titles?

Sony has also come out and stated that just as much resources are going into the PS VIta as that of the PS3 and that last time around that didn't happen because they were getting ready to launch the PS3 and had to pull a lot away from the the PSP... But wait, isn't Nintendo releasing a new home console this winter? Are we seeing any big name titles releasing in the winter/spring of 2012 from Nintendo with the exception of those titles that have been disappointingly delayed? I'm starting to think that Nintendo and Sony are about to switch chairs. Nintendo's answer to not having a lot of good games coming down the tube has been to delay and spread out those that they have.

Thank you. Again, why isn't Nintendo doing this? Last time I checked they weren't good at getting lots of 3rd party titles on board.

Nintendo doesn't value "indie" developers. Iwata already said so. They think their dollar games on IOS devalue the whole industry. So I doubt they'll be giving away free dev kits.

Sony meanwhile has stated that they value these developers and most likely know, that if they tried, PS Minis would be a serious gaming competitor to IOS if Minis work on both Vita, PS3 and PS Certified phones.

My question wasn't just directed towards their treatment of indie developers. Nintendo should be kissing the boots of all the major 3rd party developers and I don't see it happening.

The great advantage of Sony vs Nintendo is that Sony is not a game dev company, so all third parties are welcome. But Nintendo is, so they depend on third parties to effectively sell their hardware but at the same times thrid parties will have an impact on the sales of Nintendo games. I've even suspecting that Nintendo is frustrating the release of some third party Wii games here and there to do not affect their own already crappy sales on games. All in all, Nintendo has became a risky bet for third parties.

Sony owns a number of development studios.

Beat me to it. Great post. One such timely example:

Sony today announced it has purchased Sucker Punch Productions, developers of the Infamous and Sly Cooper franchises.

Well I guess we'll see what happens. If Iwata really wants to push digital content, he needs to get more small developers, and that means giving them free dev kits or helping them.

well sometimes, an indie guy can make incredible achievements.

like... Cave Story ???
like... Minecraft ???
like... Dwarf fortress ???
i think its worthy to help indie developpers. a lot have very innovative ideas, but lack either experience, studies, money, etc.

Yeah, Nintendo is living in the past. Sony sees the new wave. That's why they're offering a 3G version and that's why they're embracing all those companies making games for the smart phones. Sony is going to try to beat them by joining them.

My understanding is that Sony is attempting to take on Apple's dominance in smartphone gaming through a combination of the Vita and the Playstation-certified phones and tablets. I do think that the Vita has a better chance of getting the attention of those smartphone gamers who are tired of dealing with on-screen buttons. I'm not sure they will succeed in their goal, but they are definitely making some aggressive moves here. And I do wish Nintendo would recruit like this, because there are some great developers out there making smartphone games that would be even better with physical controls.

Well for one they are still trying to get their third party's straightened out So I doubt they are concerned about the Indie at the moment. Though i agree this would benefit, but give Nintendo some slack. They are working on improving themselves..... just very slowly.

Indie developers huh? Personally, indie developers can either be really crap, or really awesome. Minecraft, Terraria and Cave Story are some really good examples of awesome indie developers. Cave Story has already been released on DSiWare, WiiWare and soon 3DS, so I think Nintendo still like Indie developers, it's just sifting through the good ones and the crap ones that I think Nintendo hate. Whereas, with big name developers like Treyarch, Ubisoft, EuroCom etc. you can usually expect quality, but even then, big name devs can make crap games.

Also, Ninty are only just dipping into the third party market and Indie devs aren't their top priority right now. Maybe in afew years,. but not now no.

Give them some slack? I gave them $250. They don't deserve slack, they are supposed to be delivering for we the consumers. What you guys aren't getting around here is that Nintendo has a huge amount of competition now. They've rule the handhelds for a long time because they didn't really have any competition. Last gen someone finally stepped up but just like Microsoft's first gen Xbox, the PSP was Sony's dress rehearsal and it was a pretty good dress rehearsal(currently outselling the 3DS two to one). Nintendo doesn't have the luxury to be putting forth such a lackluster showing in this day in age. Times have changed and they have three big time heavy hitters who are looking to pass them by. You continue giving them some slack and I will continue wonder if this is the last handheld Nintendo releases if things don't change dramatically in their strategy/implementation going forward.

You really think 3G with AT&T is the new wave? You're real funny

I also want to point something else out: we've been paying close attention to the indie developers that made great games. Now let's count the amount of crap games made by indie developers. That's pretty much the overwhelming majority there

If you can be bothered to look outside your backyard, there is a whole world who uses 3G and aren't joined at the hip to one provider to get the 3G service.
