Topic: Why do Nintendo Games Never go Down in Value?

Example Fire Emblem: Awakening is still selling for the same price as the new ones, even the second hand ones are selling almost full new retail price. And others like Bravely Default, Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong 3D and any Kirby game are selling second hand almost same price as new. Why? The games are not rare as there is so many second hand ones selling. Games on PlayStation and Xbox lose there value within months, any 3DS games takes years. I don't get it...

@Tsurii Really? I can find New Super Mario Bros. U for around €20, Bayonetta is still around €28, but I've seen it go for as low as €20 as well. Nintendo games will usually drop to 20 bucks after two years, if the game isn't rare. They don't drop as fast in price as other games, but they don't stay €60 for years. Even after a few weeks it's usually possible to get them for around €30-40.

Anyway, the reason why they stay that high? Often because they're quality games that still sell after years. Look at Splatoon for example, it still manages to remain in the top 10 in the Japanese charts, despite the abysmal Wii U sales. As long as the games still sell pretty well, there's no reason to drop the price. When people buy Nintendo consoles, I wouldn't be surprised if they got some of the ''older'' games as well that they missed out on.

In short, they stay relatively high priced, but if you look around, I'm sure you can find some good deals.

What country do you live in? In the UK where I am at least this has kinda stopped this gen. 90+% of Nintendo games launch well below the usual £45-50 games cost here, and a good portion of them drop to £20 eventually. Even lower than that in some cases like Bayonetta 2.

I'm in the UK. Sorry, I should have been more clear, I was meaning more 3DS games as opposed to Wii U. I see Wii U games in general do drop a bit atleast but some 3DS games, especially Nintendo published or made ones just stay at silly prices.

Supposedly some of this is also up to the retailer. My local Walmart just dropped their price of Metroid: Other M down from $50 USD to $20 after how many years.

They seem to not drop as quickly in the US. Most Nintendo games are still full priced here. Even DS/Wii games from years ago. The retailers don't typically want to waiver from the official MSRP for whatever reason.

3DS games drop, you just got to keep an eye out. I got Triple Deluxe for £20 from Argos not long after it came out. Code Name STEAM for £5 a month after launch. Chibi-Robo for £12 a few weeks after release. Recently got Paper Jam Bros and TriForce Heroes for £15 each from TheGameCollection. Sites like HotUKDeals are great for getting bargains.

Wii U is the same. Twilight Princess HD and Star Fox Zero both available for £22 this week.

Main Pokemon games in particular never seem to lose their value. Even used and in below average conditions.

Due to my understanding, it's because most Nintendo games tend to be what I've heard called "evergreen".

Most other games tend to get the bulk of their sales during the first month (even first week) then drastically drop off. Once interest drops off, retailers drop the price.

For many Nintendo games (like Smash, Mario Kart, Pokémon), they still sale at pretty consistent rates months (if not years) after release, meaning retailers see less reason to drop the price.

To Nintendo's credit, they've released quite a few of their titles under the Nintendo Selects label e.g. The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds. This means that the prices have been permanently cut in half. I would love to see them do more sales in partnership with companies though, like they've been doing with Humble Bundle.
