The Vita isn't getting a ton of support from western 3rd party devs, either. Unless you count the indies, which are only really supporting it because of early incentives from Sony, mixed with the relative lack of AAA competition, making the system more of a draw for indies.
Well the question is do we really need western support? The DS and 3DS (and Vita from what I hear) have amazing libraries as is
The 3DS doesn't have an amazing library it has loads of the boring new type of JRPG and medicore platformers based on Wii Tech and a few games done properly.
The PSP has an amazing library the Vita doesn't really its got Dragons Crown and that is about it. (Not enough of the PSP stuff is on PSN either or it is only on the Japan PSN).

I can seee his point though, what if you don't like JRPGs? Your pickings get cut down by a lot. Platformers for me have been a hit or miss. I like JRPGs but there's some I just cannot play because I watch too much anime and I have played so many JRPGs I'm kinda getting fed up with the typical JRPG/anime-like cliches. This was the reason I could not get into Tales of the Abyss, it's still sitting there in my closet waiting to be finished, maybe I will someday :/
I got to admit, if I hadn't warmed up to JRPGs this generation the 3DS would be a tad lacking in much else of note. The JRPGs easily double its 'must have' library. Which does the system credit, but I can totally see the system being a dud for someone not into JRPGs.
And if you want something that gets away from the JRPG story cliches... try Shin Megami Tensei IV or Soul Hackers.
I don't get that because half of the JRPGs are too different to complain about them just because they are JRPGs. Like I think EO, Kingdom Hearts and Crimson Shroud are kinda different...
EO is different in that it's really heavily western fantasy themed, not to mention its gameplay is heavily influenced by the granddaddy of all RPGs, Wizardry, which is pretty different for a JRPG I guess?

Don't get me started on TotA. MAJOR disappointment after starting the series with ToS. Bad unlikable characters, simple story unnecessarily stretched over 50 hours, massive frontload of technobabble, and completely linear. Still fun though.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

The story wasn't any simpler that TOS's nor was it much more linear. How exactly was the cast "bad" or "unlikable"? Luke was during the beginning but he was supposed to. As for the techno-babble I like it since it helped flesh out the game's world a bit more, they literally dealt with the fundamentals of their world.
As for @Unrandomsam's post, whats this "new type of JRPG" you find so boring? You praised the PSP's library which was also considered a JRPG machine, and fantastic if you like Atlus or XSEED, the later being a rather prominent 3rd-party developer for the 3DS as well.
I don't see the issue here. Of course western support for 3DS would be nice, but most of them are simply unable to come up with anything that doesn't involve semi-real settings, overprioritized graphics and terrible excuse plots. They lack the kind of creativity that makes up most successful 3DS titles, and even though japan lost A LOT of creativity over the last 8 years, they're still doing it better than the west, where most games look painfully similar.
It might be a bit generalized, but the point stands: western devs know what sells (FPS, GTA, realistic but boring sports games), and that stuff won't ever sell well on a 3DS.
Western developers do not see handhelds seriously, the type of games western developers used to release on handheld are better fit for mobile phones...... Japanese developers take handhelds with the same seriousness of other consoles thats why they make awesome 3DS and Vita games
Most of your biggest western third-parties really don't have a history with handhelds. Many of them found their first successes on PCs or Consoles, and that's where they have built up their audiences. They also want to work on the most powerful platforms that are on the market at the time, and have little to no interest in working on what they view as lesser hardware. Also, while popular, handhelds in the west are viewed as either secondary consoles or something you buy for kids. Most western developers don't mess with handhelds, because they assume their target audience is either not playing them, or does not exist on those platforms.
One other thing to note is that the West and Japan have wildly different markets. In Japan, handhelds are the top systems, and dominate the market over home consoles. As a result, many Japanese developers turned their efforts to handhelds, since that's where most of their audience is. Handhelds are also cheaper to make games for, serving as a further incentive for them to work on handhelds. Compare that to the west, where home consoles and PCs are the top dogs in the the market.

Oh c'mon. That's a completely ridiculous accusation. Of course they could make good games for the 3DS if they tried. As we've seen from western indies, whose games are often suited for the 3DS quite nicely.
I think the bigger issue is that western developers have largely been set up to make action blockbusters over the last decade. It doesn't mean they're incapable of doing something else, it means it just doesn't fit their general company layout. If they were to make a 3DS game, what do they do with those 30 guys who are working in advanced graphics? Just lay them off?
