Topic: who thinks we need louder sound on 3DS?

i understand they have gone for a safe setting,

but i think there should at least be a different volume setting for when you have headphones on.
even make it part of the parental controls so it is not very loud for children if you like.

but when i listen to my music i'd like to bass to be pumping proper

I've never had a problem with the sound quality on any of my DS consoles. Especially with headphones plugged in, I've always been great.

I don't really understand why people want their DS to be so loud when they're not using headphones. I think the people around you would probably prefer that you have the sound down. Just sayin'...

I don't know if it's possible for them to make it louder via an update, but it would be useful. Personally I find it possible to listen to music with the volume knob up just a tick, but my ears are probably hyper-sensitive or something (turning it up anywhere near max volume makes my head explode immediately). Not everyone can hear well and sometimes loud locations demand louder music, so why not? The parental control thing is a good idea as well.

The real question is whether it's actually possible to do that, or if we would have to wait for the hardware revision. It might be a hardware thing.

It was one of the first things that struck me when I first had a go on a 3DS that the sound was drowned out by the background noise of the shop... I haven't tried it with head phones yet. Although I did plug it through a pair of amped up speakers at school the other day - that was fun!

Haven't had a problem with that either yet.
But if you're playing at home you can at least get some nice stereo speakers which don't cost too much. As one that likes a bit more bass to his experience this makes a big difference to me.

The DS Lite is plenty loud enough, and so are all the other DS's, including the 3DS. No problems here, especially with my EAR BUDS plugged in.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

The original Gameboy had an amplifier accessory you could plug into the headphone jack.
It made the Gameboy taller and kinda awkward to use but it was great to annoy parents.
They already hated those bleeps and boops and with the add on you could really drive them nuts.
It was almost too loud.

When using headphones it isnt really an issue but the 3DS just doesnt seem load enough to play music without them. The sound just gets drowned out by other background noise.

I also believe it would be a great mistake to have increased output on open air.
and didn't complain about the quality of the sound (although EQ settings would be greatly welcome!)

I also have the sound at half at home. In a silent environment.
But when you try to listen to music while on the street, i would like to know what you think, after the environmental sounds cancel everything. It is possible to increase the volume via an update. you can at least increase it to double. And 99% you can increase the output ONLY at the headphone jack specifically. Sam i was planning to replace my ipod

increase volume via an update would mean that nintendo put wether a limiter chip, or some coding to prevent an increase.
A coding would mean nintendo put a stronger sound hardware than what they intended to use anyway rather pointless. think about it:
they have to spend money on:

  • a stronger/costly sound hardware + a limiter chipset and pay a guy to code something to limit sound. $$$
  • they could go simple, cost efficient, by putting the sound hardware less powerful, cheaper in the end. without any use of chipset or coding.

With this in mind, I highly doubt it can be fixed by a patch/update. I think its a matter of hardware power. I cant find what the 3DS hardware is in detail neither.

but anyway, i hardly put the sound fully on when im using it without the headphones. i dont wanna bother anyone around me with my gaming noises.
with my headphones, it varies from game to game, but its usually near the max, if not always. Better get yourself some great headphones too, because i got cheap ones and almost didnt hear anything in the bus, or walking on the street. i had to go buy costly headphones with great sound to be able to walk with sound on and actually hear something decent.
even there, its far behind what an ipod can give you.

the ehadphone jack might be a source of the problem, i wonder if it can be tweaked or something.

That's why you should use headphones or earbuds when playing outside. I never play my games out loud in public.

Now I'm pretty sure my hearing isn't stellar, I think it's probably a little under average, but I have no problems with the volume on the 3DS. I haven't tried the music on it, but that's what my ipod is for. I've never really tried to play it in public, but even playing it in a room with the tv on I still can hear it just fine with the volume on a medium level.
I dunno maybe my 3DS is just superior (totally kidding).

I really think the issue is with the music player, I mean when I play the 3DS games they sound perfectly load enough without headphones but when playing music without headphones the sound just doesnt seem to cut it... surely if thats the case then mabey the music player just needs patching?

Yea, I have to say i don't think I've got any major issues as far as the sound, but as Raptor mentiooned yes, the music player is definitely in need of some sort of patch. I find it a little ironic myself, thateven with certain headphones, it still isn't quite as loudas it could be. But even to listen to it without the headphones, simply not loud enough.

Not loud enough for me. It should go to 11.
