Topic: Where is all the 3DS love?

Ok, so I know we just got a splurge of awesome games for the 3DS. I am up to my face in FE:A, MH3U, LM2, and I finally got PMSS.

I guess my question is, every time I look at the front page there is some kickstarter announced for a game to go to Wii U. Or some article about how, ah shucks, a game isn't going to make it to Wii U. Why aren't these developers bringing these games to the 3DS eShop? Correct me if I am wrong, but the install base is MUCH larger for the 3DS, amirite? I also think it could be argued that the 3DS is the better system as well. I am all for the Wii U and whatever, but how about some 3DS love?! The list of upcoming games is crazy short, and they are all going to be out by the beginning of summer.

I have both systems, but I love my 3DS way more than my Wii U. The games are better, the system is better (of course, imo) and it's just all around better. If making the games in 3D is the concern, well, it shouldn't be. I rarely use the 3D as it is, and I assume most people hardly use it.

(Side note: I kind of wish the 3D gimmick had been passed on and the extra space used for better graphics or something.)

Anyway, this is just a spoon ranting about wanting more games to look forward to.

I believe people are looking to Wii U because it's easy to port to, easy to develop for, can support bigger games, is a home console, and there's a rumor going around Nintendo's giving out dev kits for free.

In the Summer Rune Factory 4 and Animal Crossing and Project X Zone are all coming out. Compared to the usual lack of titles in the Summer I really don't see the point of this article at all. 3DS is set with great games The problem at the moment is that WiiU needs more games. 3DS is fine. So turn this thread into a WiiU is doomed/Nintendo is Doomed thread plz >:[

I think your perception of things is not quite right. NL are posting about Wii U development because there's scarcely an announcement of an original game for the system, so any announcement is big news. On the other hand, the 3DS' continued level of high sales globally ensures that many developers are willing to put their games on the system; there are probably a far larger number of games on the way to the 3DS, they're just not publicised as much. With the Wii U, any game announcement is shouted from the heavens because the Wii U is in such dire need of software.

Well, I don't think the Wii U is doomed. It's a cool system suffering from Nintendohateritus. Blaze and 3Dash you bring up excellent points.

I just need more 3DS love, more more more more more. I bought the dang thing when it came out, upgraded to the XL and am just a beast in love with this thang. I don't even touch my PC anymore. My PS(1,2,3) are all covered in dust and all sad and stuff.

3DS is the best. Wii U can have its leftovers.

The 3D is NOT a gimmick. Try playing Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Super Mario 3D Land, Pushmo, Mutant Mudds, etc. and then tell me that the stereoscopic depth doesn't greatly enhance the gameplay experience for you.

If I want super-sharp graphics then I'll go play something on my 360. The 3DS lets you experience games in a whole new way.

I don't understand why they can't just make it similar to Sony's system (you can play PS3 games on your Vita or something like that), essentially like how Capcom did with MH3U. It would be perfect for Animal Crossing, you could play on your 3DS while away from home and then when you get home you could pick right back up on your Wii U. Besides, where is the ability to control your Wii U with your 3DS?

I own all of those. In my opinion (get your pitchfork ready youngster) the 3D is cool, but has little bearing on the actual game play. I will admit that I watch every cut scene in FE:A with the 3D cranked to 11. However, I do not play the games in 3D. (Wait, strike that, I do for the first half hour or so to see if they did it well or not. But then I leave it off.)

ChrisT99: Hell yeah dude. I likes the way you think. Fire Emblem would be awesome with a feature like that, and I would totally buy both.

I think 3DS is getting enough love as is.
It's a fantastic console after all.

A lot of people would disagree. I know I would. I don't mind if people dislike the 3D, for whatever reason, but I tire of hearing it being called a "gimmick."

One thing I've noticed about Nintendo: a lot of their "gimmicks" become industry standards before long. I don't know if glasses-free 3D will catch on with the rest of the gaming world as well, but it is certainly unique, and a welcome change from this never-ending race to see which machine can produce the prettiest graphics.

Well I am with you there. I do not love Nintendo because of pretty graphics. I love them for the experiences that they create. On that note, the 3D is an amazing addition to that experience. I remember the first day with my 3DS, I couldn't stop smiling and nerding out on how awesome the 3D effect is. I should not have used the word gimmick. I myself have gotten upset when others referred to the Wiimotes as a gimmick.

I guess what I was getting at is, I feel a lot of developers won't bring their games to the 3DS because they don't want to add the 3D into the code or whatever. I would rather someone brought their game to the table with no 3D than not at all.

Has there been any of that? I haven't heard anything about developers having problems coding for the 3D effect, like we've heard for years about writing games to work with the PS3 hardware, and it has a ton of third-party support, but I could be wrong. I certainly wouldn't want an otherwise excellent game to not come to Nintendo's handheld because it lacks a 3D effect, although I do feel that some level of 3D is expected for all retail releases on the system (which might explain some of the annoance people had with Devil Survivor: Overclocked, which has almost no 3D in it at all). At least in some cases, though, games can be released on the eshop without incorporating any kind of 3D (Fractured Soul is a prime example, although, due to the gameplay style, it might be a special exception).

I think the biggest drawback to the 3DS hardware is the lack of a dual analog control scheme. There are quite a few games that are either entirely unplayable or extremely uncomfortable to play without the second analog stick. On one hand I don't care about this too much, because the games I usually like to play don't require dual analog sticks anyway, but, on the other hand, this does severely limit its appeal to indie developers.

The 3DS has a ton of third party support, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Vita becomes the go-to handheld for indie developers. There are already a ton of previously PC-exclusive titles being released on the Vita (one prominent example being the stellar Hotline Miami).

One thing I think we can both agree on, though, is that, regardless of any of its limitations hardware-wise, the 3DS is quickly developing the best software line ever for a handheld. Actually, I think it is stronger software-wise than most of the Nintendo consoles I've owned, SNES put aside.

But 3D is a gimmick. Dictionary definition is "an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, especially one designed to attract attention or increase appeal." Yes, there does seem to be a very negative connotation when you call something a gimmick. And personally I love the 3D and think it adds quite a lot to the games. But it is a gimmick, just as motion control was a gimmick (that again, I love).

Might as well accept that term

Someone get this man a medal. A gimmick it is then. Let's embrace the word for what it is.

It doesn't enhance the experience for me. At all. I seriously can't think of a single 3DS game where the 3D enhanced the experience for me. Or Any movie where it didn't hinder the experience for me. 3D is a gimmick. Northing more.

I guess the better discussion is not "is stereoscopic 3D a gimmick," but "is stereoscopic 3D something with practical value to the gameplay experience."

Open question: does the 3D enhance the gaming experience for you, or is it just something to attract attention to the system but which has no practical value?

The 3ds has completely taken over as my gaming system of choice. It started off slow but boy has it stepped it up in my opinion. I enjoy almost everything it has to offer, Streetpass, Swapnote, 3D, 3ds Sound and Activity Log. The Eshop is also starting to gather a library of great games aside from the awesome list of retail games. Plenty of love for the 3ds from me, lol, "gimmick" and all
