On the 3DS XL I keep it one notch above the off position, the very slight 3D effect gives the illusion of a crisper / brighter image, like HD lite IMO.
Full 3D tends to make me feel slightly nauseated, and the off button takes away from the image quality.
when I use 3D I keep it at max but now that I think of it maybe that's the reason I can't use the 3D for too long....

I have my 3D on full, all the time. Playing without 3D is just so much less enjoyable for me, and having it on full is never too strong for me (Ocarina of Time 3D being the one exception to that rule (makes my eyes hurt even on half) - but that was an early release; they obviously hadn't gotten the hang of it yet).
For me, the depth slider is either all the way up or completely turned off. I often tend to use the latter, since the more recent games aren't exploiting it that much anyways.
Depends on the game, really. If the game has an unimpressive or laggy 3D effect (Virtue's Last Reward; Pokemon X and Y; New Super Mario Bros. 2; Dead or Alive: Dimensions), I'll just keep it off. If full 3D is impressive but not too overwhelming (Star Fox 64 3D; Link Between Worlds; Super Mario 3D World; Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D), I'll push the slides up all the way. If the 3D is impressive but too overwhelming when maxed out (Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy; Resident Evil: Revelations), I'll usually put the slider half-way between the top and bottom.
As much as two-thirds of the way up all the way down to as low as it can go without being off. i do a lot of adjusting. i try to keep it on high but sometimes it can be hard to keep the image looking clear so ill turn it down all the way so that text bubbles still pop out while keeping an image that isnt blurry.
