So, what's the difference between and arcade mode and a time trial in a fighting game, exactly?
[/div]
[/div]
arcade mode is normaly where you beat your opponent in a best of three rounds match. the rounds are timed, but it`s not a necessity to beat you opponent as quick as possible. although, if a time runs out while both charecters still have energy left, the charecter with the most energy wins the round.
arcade mode usually has a set amount of charecters to defeat, mostly to reach the final boss(es) charecter(s).
time trial mode has you fight against a set amount of charecters that you can pick from. e.g 10, 20, 50, 100.
the idea is to pick an amount an clear your way through that amount of fighters in as little time as possible.
the set you pick with the higher amounts of fighters tend to get proggresively harder to defeat the further you go.
most time trial modes are single round matches.
depending on the game, some dev`s make time trials harder by only partialy re-filling your energy bar after each defeat of an opponent. so you need to make sure your defence is pretty strong.

DOA taking the lifebar aspect from other time trials in fighting games and puts it in its survival mode.
However, the mode I put the most time into was Free Play. It allowed me to learn the ropes pretty quickly, and now I play on the highest difficulty on the game. It's basically arcade mode, but without the game over screen. When you lose, you can just keep playing. It's basically multiplayer without the other player. @darthstuey A game can be stellar without getting over a 90 average on Metacritic. Just look at Vanquish. That game has got to have the greatest 3rd person shooting mechanics on the planet. You seem to realize this though. A big problem with a lot of 3DS games was lack of content. Pilotwings and Steel Diver become a lot more enticing when their prices are severely cut, which did just happen in my territory (USA), since both can be bought at $5 right now, an eigth of the price. I don't think anything like that has happened in Britain yet, but it'll happen eventually, since I doubt most people will buy those at the rediculous price of $40/Pounds. When I looked around, I learned that Atlus doesn't publish games in Europe, which really sucks. You're missing out on Devil Survivor: Overclocked, which is an absolutely phenomenal game. Ghostlight is publishing it in Europe, so keep an eye on it in the future, it's really good.
Kid Icarus Uprising is an amazing game. The controls take getting used to but it took under an hour for me to get the hang of it.
Yes, Star Fox and Zelda are remakes but they're definitely worth picking up again. SF has a new mode that lets you jump straight into any level(score attack). OoT has a new 'boss rush' mode that pits you against the bosses back-to-back(like boss endurance.)
The eShop has many games that your son would like. Pushmo, Mighty Switch Force, Colors 3D. Also some Virtual Console games such as the first 3 Mario Land games, Zelda Link's Awakening and a few Kirby titles.
Sorry if I sounded a little harsh in my last post (the way you worded your first post almost made it sound as if you were trying to troll. Sorry for the misconception).
A few games I would highly recommend:
Tales of the Abyss - It's a great RPG that'll last 40-50 hours, and that's not counting if you decide to take on side quests. The only major complaint against it is that it doesn't add anything new from the PS2 version, but if you (or your son) haven't played it before, that one minor complaint should be mute.
Dead or Alive: Dimensions - Easily the best fighter on the system, IMO. A lot of people have commented on this, so I really can't think of anything to add.
Kid Icarus: Uprising - You already seem very interested in it, so it'd be redundant to try and convince you any further.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy - Despite the "Assault Horizon" subtitle, this isn't connected to the console title at all. It'll have 18 missions on a single playthrough, but there's either 23 or 24 missions in total, so it takes 2 playthroughs to see it all. It has over 20 unlockable real world aircraft (multiple color schemes and special weapons to unlock in addition), unlockable special & survival missions, achievements (in the form of medals), and it looks & plays great.
All these titles are rated "T" or under.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I actually miss some more RPG games. I like puzzles and platformers, but I think I've had enough of them (My last 2 purchases have been Rayman Origins and Shinobi, and I already have Mutant mudds, Pushmo, and more). Got myself a copy of Heroes of Ruin but it was pretty disappointing. Maybe I'll check out Tales of the Abyss sometime, but I'd like some new content, not just remakes... that, or play EO III while EO IV is released in Europe :/
Oh, and hate me all you want, but I think it's time for nintendo to move on from Mario, Link and co. They had their great games, no doubt, but they have way too much spot as every year's main releases. Stop milking that cow, and put those great developers to work on something fresh and new.

1. There are more than 3 gaming genres y'know.
2.I partially agree with too many Marios and Zeldas but Zelda isn't THAT overdone and Mario at least has enough side games that are completely different games from the platformer's slow decent into safe, fan pandering redundancy.
Nintendo should stop milking the ice climber series
Digitaloggery 3DS FC: Otaku1 WiiU: 013017970991 Nintendo of Japan niconico community is full of kawaii! Must finish my backlagg or at least get close this year W...

Yeah, I know, you know and pretty much everyone knows, now let's hope nintendo realizes too

Mario - Platforming
Paper Mario - RPG
Legend of Zelda - Action & Adventure
Star Fox - On rails shooter
Mario Kart - Racing
Mario Party - Party
Look at all these different genres...heck Mario covered most of them
Current games: Everything on Switch

On retail I bought Ghost Recon Shadow Wars (best game on 3DS one of the best ever), Mario kart , 3d land, ocarina, starfox, pacman galaga, kid Icarus, revelations ( 2nd favorite after shadow wars so thats third party for you), MGS, DoA... and I think that's it. On eshop the amazing pushmo , freaky forms, zen pinball, sakura samurai, kid Icarus as bonus, vvvvv and mutant mudds. Considering the vc the dsi and the DS library..... seems plentiful to me. And there are already about 10 retail games already out (like heroes of ruin and Mario tennis) or upcoming (like Luigi mansion and nsmb2 and paper Mario and castlevania) that I want.
When I spend O.99 on my smartphone to unlock something I feel like i wasted more than when I pay for an amazing experience like re r or shadow wars or Mario 3d Land or kids Icarus even if its up to 40 dollars.
