Well, I think/hope Café´s out late 2011 and I also think it would be a great idea to unite the online playroom between games of different consoles. With a huge fanbase, Mario Kart would be good as first in line for such a feature. I guess you guys are happy with things the way things are.
If Nintendo had warehouses full of their new console ready to be shipped that soon, they would have announced it last E3. Japan might get it during the first half of next year, but they need a lot more time to manufacture enough units for an international release. I think Nintendo themselves even said 2012 (they didn't specify where, though).
What you're saying makes sense for some games, but Mario Kart would probably benefit least from it. From a business perspective it doesn't make sense, especially for a high profile, first party title. Why does it even matter what system your opponent is playing the game on?
And no, I'm not happy with the way things are. It would be nice if they could fix Mario Kart's broken gameplay.

I don't think that there is any reasonable chance of Nintendo's Project Cafe (Wii successor) being released this year. At the earliest, Project Cafe might be released in the Spring of 2012, some were along the lines of March or April.
However, trying to make a Mario Kart cross-platform game for the DSi, Wii, 3DS and Project Cafe is totally and completely unnecessary and unrealistic. The Nintendo 3DS is on a whole new graphical level for handhelds. The 3DS and Sony NGP are pushing the envelope of high quality handheld graphics. The DS and Wii are going to be obsolete within milliseconds and it wouldn't be profitable, economically sound nor feasible to try and intregrate the DS and Wii with the 3DS and Project Cafe as the graphical capabilities of the 3DS and Project Cafe make the Wii and DS look like pea soup. SEGA turned down putting Sonic Generations on the Wii because it wasn't graphically capable and they chose instead to develop Sonic Generations for the 3DS instead as it has already been said to be far more graphically powerful than the Wii by the editors over at IGN.com's website.
However, I'm quite sure that we will see cross-platform games for the 3DS and Project Cafe as was illustrated in the cross platform game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time for the Wii and DS.
