I adore the Switch. But I also adored the DS line of systems. Between the original DS and the New 3DS I owned the DS, DSi, 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS XL and 2 New 3DS, one Japanese and one American.
But imagine if you will, If Nintendo had taken a different route and released a totally new DS system. One that boasted modern mobile devices touch screens, and in glorious HD. As well as the lower resolution that older games were designed for. Supporting backward compatibility all the way to Game Boy cartridges. Such a device would likely have been a bit thicker than the current 3DS systems to support the needed hardware - like the Game Boy slot, but it could have been something truly special.
The system would have had a vibrant e-shop full of new HD game releases, a full DS library now downloadable, indie games and virtual console galore. It would have supported all the video streaming apps and had a built in web-browser comparable to most modern tablets.
Such a device would undoubtedly have been very expensive - possibly more than the Switch. And yet, I think such a device could have worked. It could have been wildly popular. Or perhaps this is just the pipe dream of a lazy man who should be getting back to work. lol
Thoughts?

I think a Switch DS would be more likely in the future as a successor to the Switch. It would basically work exactly like the Switch with handheld and docked modes but with dual screens that can be closed like the DS. It would also be more powerful than the current Switch.
If this ever were to happen, it won't be before 2022 I think though.
I really hope so. I'm not sure it's necessarily the best idea for Nintendo, but the slow death of dual screen gaming (and touch screen Nintendo gaming) is a real shame. We should never have to go back to constant pausing for maps and item management.
@SleepyOtus I cannot remember where, but I believe Nintendo stated a 6-7 year plan for the Switch. Meaning 2023-2024 around which we'd see whatever new device they decide on. I think incorporating the DS and Switch lines would be a wonderful idea. It would however have to be a repeat of the Wii U. Otherwise the touch screen nature of many games would be ignored in TV mode - much like how the current Switch uses its touch screen so seldomly that many forgot it IS a touch screen. I could imagine a detachable top screen that connects to the TV, where the bottom part functions as the controller while in TV mode. Then when you Switch to mobile you just snap that part right back on... hmm interesting thought at least.

I like this idea. If they ever release a Switch DS and give it backward compatibility with 3DS games i would upgrade instantly.
Only reason i don't have a Switch yet it's because of the huge backlog of games i still have on my 3DS (also counting the DS games). Because of that i'm not exactly in a hurry to get a Switch for now since i'm not even halfway through my backlog.
If they ever make something like that, personally i wouldn't have a reason to not upgrade right away. Still, i think i'll buy a Switch way before they even make any new model or revision, but something like that would be the final push to adopt it early than i planned.
Would be nice, would also require more processing power and I fear this would raise the price much higher. Nothing wrong with the graphics at the moment in my opinion
@GameStationForum The one thing I would want graphically is a higher resolution. The games on 3DS look nice enough to be sure, the 3D models and environments are nice. But they are obviously pixely and blurry at times. Raising the resolution to 720 or 1080 would smoothe everything out very nicely. Also a brighter screen couldn't hurt - but that isn't a graphics thing.
Also having that higher resolution support would mean video apps on 3DS would be actually useful. I find it cringe worthy to have see Netflix and Youtube on the current 3DS screen.
