I just made a topic about a reply I'd gotten from Nintendo regarding the circle pad and its compatibility with DS games, and theblackdragon's response got me wondering:
What DS games will you try again on the 3DS to see how the games will play with the circle pad?
I'm curious to see how Super Mario 64 DS will play.
according to what's been said already, only games with full analog movement controls (e.g. you would be using the touchscreen to direct your little dude and he'd follow your stylus everywhere you pointed it without fail and without automatically falling into one of the 8 directions) would be able to take advantage of the circle pad. anything else will be stuck with their normal four or eight directions. it would probably be a hassle in terms of games requiring precise control because you might think you're hitting one direction when you're actually off by a fair amount and the game registers another direction because of that, haha.
anyway, the only game i can think of off the top of my head that would really be aided by the circle pad would be SM64DS. i'll probably wind up giving that a shot whenever i manage to scrounge up the funds for a 3DS of my own. :3

I'll probably go back to Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS, Maybe Grand Theft Chinatown Wars. I'll also try to play Okamiden sparingly so I can save it for the Circle Pad.
Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS, Diddy Kong Racing DS, GTA Chinatown Wars

Retro games, Modern games, all AWESOME!!!
I can say with 100% certainty that if the circle pad can be used in DS games, then it will be emulating the d-pad, not adding analogue control to DS games.
Having said that, like HolyMackerel said, some games may well still be easier on the thumb with the circle pad, but you are not generally going to find it to be an improved experience. I suspect in a lot of cases it will actually be harder to play like that.

My top replayed DS game due to Circle Pad digital input is Super Mario 64 DS, but as ImDiggerDan said it won't add analogue input, meaning the range of movement is still up to 8 directions for such DS games.

Well, like theblackdragon said before, I think the only games that will improve significantly with the addition of the circle pad will be games which have both the option to control your character with the stylus or the D-pad, as these games generally don't have their characters only move in 8 directions, for example, Super Mario 64 DS.
At the moment I can't think of any other game that has both options like that...Super Scribblenauts
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
Even with just 8 directions, Phantasy Star Zero and Pop Island would benefit immensely from the analog pad. My thumb is still sore from those games.
True Dat.
Also Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. That game really wrecks your thumbs.
