I'm guessing some games could use them as an alternative way to pay for DLC. Nintendo could probably offer some goodies for your mii with the game coins.

Only 300 max? At the limits they put on it one would reach that in a month. One would have to keep finding things to spend it on to get the best out of it.

Reggie himself has gone on record to say that Play Coins can only be used for content in the game, and not downloading new content.
Why are they limiting them to 300? So people can't use them as a form of achievements or something. Doesn't make sense.
They limited play coins to 300 (10 coins daily) a month so people won't try to rig the system. You know, shaking the system to make it think you are walking. If you do try shaking the system for coins, your hand would be very sore, so your better off just walking{in which I do alot}.

Hostestly I was expecting something where they would give you a coin for every 3DS you passed in that day or they had some kind of GPS that keeps track of how far your 3DS moves. Both would be much better then shacking your 3DS counts as a foot step.

The Lego Pirates game said something about doing a streetpass battle and the winner being able to win Play Coins.

If that's not the right link, you'll have to forgive me, I don't feel like re watching any episodes right now.
Yeah but if a 3rd party developer wanted to make some kind of online shop for their game with new costumes or something for purchase, I'm sure they would be able to charge play coins for content.
I figure they imposed the 300 limit so that people who want to use the feature will have to spend their coins. Otherwise why bother with a total holdings limit just to stop people from trying to shake the system a lot? They already do that with the 10 coin max a day thing. Though I really think the limit is just to try to encourage people to keep their 3DS on them at all times to try and achieve that limit throughout their normal day. It's only 1000 steps a day, which is pretty little. Also the limit I would think is there in order to keep some games interesting for a little longer. If you can open up everything on day one as opposed to having to do it slowly over a month, then you'll end up playing the game over a longer period of time.
I mean honestly no one can really stop people from trying to rig a step system. And I don't honestly see why they'd care to try to. They make their devices with it's intentions and a lot of people will use them in the way they are intended for. If there are those who do whatever to get their steps up (like putting a pokewalker on the washing machine or just shaking it back and forth) then whatever. Unless somehow you're committing a real crime with that device no one (not even the company who made it) really cares that you aren't using it for it's intended purpose.

What he said. Its to get people to keep the 3DS on them as much as possible. Plus, if people are seeing playing them in public, its pretty much free advertising.
Once you defeat the dragon on AR games fishing game, it will open up a blue cube that when you click, you have a choice to use your play coins to buy more things, such as free fishing, 3d tools, a globe, and more.
