Topic: Ways Pokemon Games Can Improve

Blast

Hey, there. I'm Blast and I'm a huge Pokemon gamer. I love the main series like Black, Gold, Yellow, etc. Actually my favorite game of all time is Pokemon Platinum.
I enjoy Pokemon games greatly but I think its about time we created a thread dedicated to how we can improve the experience of a Pokemon (main) game. If there already is a thread for this then please let me know.

Here are some of my suggestions

giving the gamer several things to do after beating the game such as.... exploring unlocked areas, more sidequests, funny and serious oddjobs the gamer can do
a cast of characters that actually have depth and not boring and in the way
a villain that's either really evil or morally confused
a rival who is frustrated with their life
more references to previous Pokemon games
take inspiration from Harvest Moon
take inspiration from Mass Effect
take inspiration from Animal Crossing
breath back value into the word "Legendary Pokemon"
bring back Distortion World
bring some anime like elements into the story

Hahah so what do you guys think?

@Blast all your suggestions are awesome!!!
here are mine:
real time battles where you control the Pokémon directly(even if just a minigame)
rewards from online battles
more minigames/extra modes
Battle modes with crazy rules or(inclusive or) gameplay completely out of normal
take inspiration from the Pokémon Adventures Manga
change the base stats to make more Pokémon viable in competitive battling
less event Pokémon that aren't distributed through Wi-fi(ok this one's a personal rant)

goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

....just coming off of a wi-fi battle that went all kinds of wrong...I think a balancing of the Mega Evolutions is in order. I agree with what's been posted above, but that sticks out to me, as I feel they went and made certain Pokemon WAY too strong now... That and make sure other modes of battle (double, triple, rotation, sky) are better integrated into the game. I mean, they really didn't put in any kind of triple or rotation battles in the main game of X and Y! Sky battles...also don't seem nearly as fleshed out, so I'd look forward to seeing that expanded upon.

Graphics come after gameplay. Every time. It takes more than being pretty to be a good game.

I'd like to have:
Non-random encounters
Better storylines
Possibly being able to join the bad guys AND/OR,
Have more evil/motivated bad guys
Have objectives better than becoming the champion (or at least more subplot stuff to strive for)
Make becoming the champion actually mean something
Harder difficulty, at least in post-game for training purposes

And I agree that non Wifi distribution sucks >.<
That is all (for now).

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!

These are some improvements I think they could make based off of my experience in Pokemon X.

Better tutorials, maybe they could make a Pokemon School you could visit that would go into a lot of depth of everything you should know.

A harder difficulty, even if it's an option. The fact that no one except for the guy with the magicarps had a full team on the initial playthrough is just pitiful.

A better way to balance online play. Frankly I stink online, but it would be nice if I could choose to start with 0 points instead of 1500 so I that I don't have to lose twenty rounds before I even get a chance to start winning. Maybe they could make "For Fun" and "For Glory" modes like SSB4. "For Fun" would be for the people like me who don't mess around with breeding or IVs or whatever, choose the pokemon for our team based on how we like them instead of how good they are at battles, and just want to battle! I just can't enjoy online when all pokemon get crushed by one OP attack, or when someone uses some annoying tactic over and over again. (Like poisoning, burning, and confusing my pokemon, then using substitute over and over again so all I can do is watch my pokemon die.)

To add to that, the Battle Spot should allow us to use our full teams in single battles, instead of having to choose just three.

Better StreetPass features. Seriously, when StreetPass was first shown, before I had ever even played a pokemon game, I thought Pokemon would be an amazing game to use StreetPass with. There could have been StreetPass battles, wonder trading, item trading, Pokédex battles, and your trainer info would be shared with each other, but nope. Instead we got a poke miles thing that was slapped on as a pointless after thought, just so they could slap "Supports StreetPass" on the game info. That was of the most disappointing things about this game for me tbh.

More replayability. I beat the game and the side-story, and I want to play more, but honestly I'm struggling to find stuff to do. It's obviously not fun just running around the pokemon village, battling the same pokemon over and over just to level up pokemon quickly to fill my Pokédex. I guess I should try breeding, though. All that said, I've spent 100 hours playing so I can't complain that there was too little content.

Balancing could definitely be improved. Online I tend to only see a select few pokemon. It would be nice if most every pokemon had there own ups and downs and unique abilities (more than there already are) that would basically make it less a question of "Which pokemon is most powerful?" to "Which pokemon best fits my play-style?"

I would like to see trainer Stats like you can get a trainer specialized in water pokemon and s/he would give perks to water pokemon when s/he uses them

Not a bad idea but at a certain point, or maybe just for player vs player battles trainer stats will need to be even.

Pokémon faces a problem that many other franchises do not have to deal with. What makes Zelda (example) great? Every succesive game has new elements, from different items, to enemies, but also differences in gameplay. Well, you may say, but so does Pokémon, doesn't it? Pokémon introduces new things every generation as well, a lot of new moves, abilities, items, Pokémon. That will keep the franchise feel fresh, wouldn't it? Not exactly. The main difference is that Zelda isn't afraid to remove certain elements, whereas Pokémon builds on the previous generation, without removing anything, they only add more; more Pokémon, more moves, more items. Except for one or two items, all is carried forward to the next generation. We have yet to see a game that contains less than its predecessor. Some Pokémon aren't even ''usable'' anymore, they have such big movesets, a lot of Pokémon are just overshadowed by others, remember when your Machop learned just six moves in the first games? I'm not saying we should go back go the first generation, but it's definitely something GameFreak should look at, and take as an example. I don't think it will hurt the franchise is the Pokémon stand out more, and have their own unique moveset. More doesn't always equal better, keeping things simple and small will usually lead to more creative games anyway.

Modify the move learning. Instead of learning at set levels, have the moves a Pokemon can learn have point values, like the magic system from Final Fantasy VI. When the Pokemon sees a move used, it gets MP (Move Points) for that move. When the move reaches 50% learned, it becomes available to use, but will have a tendency to not work or not be as strong, which lessens as the learn percentage goes up. This would actually make the gyms useful for something other than getting plot coupons, since the trainers there could teach your Pokemon moves of a given type in "training battles".

Also, the point values for a move would be different by the Pokemon. Pokemon will naturally be more "attuned" to moves of their own type, and less so to a type they're weak against, translating as needing less or more MP to get a particular move.

This is just a bare bones explanation of my idea.

My problem with X and Y is that some "new" features weren't really that great.

Mega Pokemon were absolutely horribly executed (by giving the most powerful Pokemon mega-forms)
The new "battles" were boring. Sky battles were not that great.

I agree with this.
Mega evolutions are a way to combat having to make tons of more Pokemon and implement them as well as older ones in a game, which is a good idea. The execution was just terrible and I think it was bad idea to revolve the story around it.

You know those gaming consoles at the start of each game? Wouldn't it be swelltastic if you could play games on them, I know it would. You could buy Pokemon games on them, and start a collection on a shelf somewhere. You could buy games from Pokegames, or get games from defeating gym leaders twice after the game (but they are much harder to beat) or special people you meet in the game. And with download being a thing, you could download some exclusive games only available on the pokE'shop. And the girl had a Pikachu 3DS XL or something, well why not continue the fun on the go with games on the 3DS/XL/2DS, while playing it on a 3DS/XL/2DS, Xzibit would be proud

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!

I would like it if you could have all gyms available and you could choose which order you wanted to tackle them in (ALBW style).

This might be hard to execute though. You would need to program the game to make the levels rise consistently, plus make all routes available, and do something with HMs. It won't be nearly as easy to do as LbW

maybe, being able to become a gym leader, elite 4 member or actually act as the champion and defend the title in the post game.
if on the 3DS they could even make it so the people you streetpass become the new gym leaders if you've already beaten the game, you'd have to choose you favorite gym and make a team limited to the gym's type to register on streetpass.
