Topic: Way to transfer stop motion video on 3DSXL to regular computer?

3DSXLMOM

Hi there--My daughter is doing some fantastic stop motion videos on her 3DSXL (it's the Legend of Zelda one), and she wants to show the kids at her school's Imagination Fair what she's doing. Is there a way to transfer the videos to a larger computer screen so the kids can see what she's doing better?

Ah .... this is awesome, a great topic actually. The AVI from the 3DS can be played in almost all modern players just fine, and I think YouTube can convert them properly as well. Go into the SD card, navigate to the folder with the videos that are in AVI format, then copy those. I forgot the name of the folder, embarrassing but story of my life, it's the one that's not Nintendo. The folders in that other folder will have them.

Just put the SD card of the 3DS in a computer with the right software to watch videos and you're good.

Yep all you have to do is pop in the SD card and you can take it right off. And then you can do things like this:

Gah, was that stored in the 3D format for YouTube? This embedded player doesn't have all the buttons so I can't tell.

@KittenKoder Since I edited it, I think it lost its 3D attributes.

Ah, you have to de-alias the video images into two separate videos for most players, then just squish the image so half of it fits on the appropriate side, which reduces the resolution for the final result but meh, 3D is awesome. I wish YouTube would use the aliased video instead so you didn't lose the resolution and it would be compatible with the 3DS, using the new YouTube app with 3D vids would be so awesome, it would bring me back to YouTube.

When I get a newer computer, which will be at least a year from now because I am moving soon, I will go back to my original project, making a 3D music video for Nintendo Video and YouTube using pure CGI. It's a hobby of mine.

Also, just some important tips, never remove the SD card while the 3DS is on, and never remove it from your computer while your copying anything to or from the SD card. There's a feature on windows called something like safe remove that you can use to be sure you don't corrupt any data. Oh, and the folder you want to look in is DCIM.

Does happen to know the exact model Nintendo uses for the sdcard that comes with the 3DS XL. (I suppose anybody doing this could have a look or upload a photo if they wanted). Any help would be appreciated by me. (I need a bigger one but I want as few possible issues as possible).

Any help much appreciated. (I know mine is a Lexar but I have only ever had mine removed once and it was by dropping the 3DS).

SDHC cards work with the 3DS, too.

Some of the higher capacity ones need to be re-formatted in order to work I've heard, though.

I think only SDXC have a higher chance of not working with the 3DS

For the best card, 32 gig is your ceiling, and if you do go that high stick with the brand Nintendo likes, Lexar. Lexar is practically guaranteed to work with the 3DS, it's Nintendo's preferred brand and is the brand shipped with the units. I rarely recommend specific brands for things, I actually don't like the notion of "this brand is always best" for anything, but in this specific instance Lexar is your brand.

I am unsure why other brands can fail, and some fail more often than others, to work for the 3DS. I haven't done research in this recently and don't know if any new light has been shed on the topic. One of the best budget brands won't work past 16 gig, Sandisk, and it truly is one of the best brands of SD card, but the 3DS just doesn't always like them for some reason or other. The only reason I mention the brand is because even the cheap ones can be an investment for some people, and it sucks when you spend money on something that doesn't work when you don't have much money to spend.
