Well, things had to remain consistent. There’s no point in adding 3D and breaking the one consistent rule for one random micro game.

Maybe it could’ve made sense to add 3D to a mini game that uses the top screen instead.

About performance issues, I’ve been playing on a 2DS and haven’t noticed anything yet.

@Silly_G Totally agree with this.
If you have a physical collection of WarioWare games sat in your little WarioWare Shrine, like I do, then this is quite frankly one of the biggest disappointments that I've had. I thought Game'n'Wario was disappointing, but .. Now I think it might have a competitor!

If you're new, it's fantastic. It's exactly what a starter needs to get into the wonderful world of WarioWare.

@Jayenkai : Gold/Gorgeous is especially good for those with no other means, but if I were to recommend any Wario game as a means of introducing one to the series, it would be Smooth Moves, no question. Smooth Moves is a smorgasbord of wild, imaginative, and hilarious ideas, and no game has been as ambitious with the Wii Remote as much as WarioWare had been. I simply cannot recommend it enough. The multiplayer modes were also very well implemented (the 5 player one with the nerve-racking rope-cutting activity at the end is a favourite at our place) and I would love to see a proper successor to this on Switch. Hell, I would settle for a port. The 12 player multiplayer mode was also great as it is so inclusive (though it could have, in theory, supported even more players than that).

I have been clamouring for a new motion-based WarioWare game for years, but I cannot say that I am particularly optimistic. It was disappointed enough that we didn't get a second one on Wii that took advantage of the Wii MotionPlus (a Switch sequel could make things right in that regard, but will they bother?).

Game & Wario had some fine ideas, but yes, it was a huge disappointment. Gamer and the multiplayer activities were highlights, especially Sketch, the likes of which cannot be replicated on any other platform (I was baffled that a Pictionary game had never been made for Wii U), and I loved the use of the camera, even though I hate having my picture taken. I'm glad it was made as it still had some great ideas, but I wish they had fleshed it out a lot more. The single-player activities played it much too safe and lacked the quirkiness and inventiveness of previous WarioWare games.

I'm kind of curious as well. I played the living snot out of Touched! back in the day and just impulse-bought the original WarioWare on the Wii U VC. Other than Game & Wario (more of a spinoff), that pretty much covers my experience with the series.

Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)

Depends on how addicted you are in getting high scores.

It's a nice trip down memory lane.

It also includes full versions of all the popular Wario Ware songs.

@ReaderRagfish : It is not worth taking your 3DS out of retirement for, no. Which is really unfortunate, because under ordinary circumstances, I couldn't recommend WarioWare games enough.

There simply isn't enough new or interesting content here for those who have already seen it all and done it all before. Even more disappointing is the lack of 3D (obviously gyro-based activities could have been exempt) and that many Wii microgames have been repurposed, serving as a bitter reminder of how much more fun they were on the console that they had been originally designed for.

Microphone games/activities aside, there is literally nothing here that could not have been done better on Switch. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if a future Switch instalment ships with an exclusive Joy-Con with an in-built speaker, camera and microphone in order to allow for a broader range of activities (well, that's what I'm fantasising about, anyway).

I would definitely recommend it to newcomers and those who have missed a WarioWare game or two, but for those who have already played through it all, I cannot recommend it except to the most ardent of fans. I'm a huge WarioWare fan, but I have to admit that I'm bored and am finding the game to be a bit of a tedious grind. I didn't wait 8 years to play some enhanced (and some downgraded) versions of past microgames. I really, really hope that a proper sequel on Switch is currently in the works because I'm yearning for new content. Frankly, I would much rather have preferred a Smooth Moves port on Switch over Gold on 3DS.

@Silly_G: Good to know. Thanks for the feedback!

I think I'll grab this since I haven't retired my 3DS just yet, but it'll be a little while. My 3/DS library presently contains a lot of my backlog.

I really enjoyed the demo for this and I have never played a WarioWare game before. Should I buy it?

Melack

Sisilly_G

@Melack : Definitely. You'll have a blast, I'm sure. If you enjoy Gold and you have a Wii or Wii U, you should definitely buy WarioWare: Smooth Moves as well.

@ReaderRagfish : Metroid Prime Federation Force, Miitopia, New Style Boutique 3, Devilish Brain Training and a number of other 3DS games released last year are now dirt cheap in Australia, so I can't imagine that WarioWare Gold will be too far behind, especially since Nintendo made the genius decision of releasing this at the dead end of the 3DS's lifespan.

@Silly_G Smooth moves was my first and only experience of WarioWare aside from Gold, now. It really was a huge amount of fun. I remember especially liking the final story mode minigame, the dancing one

I love WarioWare but never played Twisted or Touched (the former wasn't released in Europe, the latter I just never got round to buying) so I'm happy with Gold. There's a good amount of stuff to do what with all the missions, challenge modes and unlockable doodads, and it has a good sense of humour. A few gripes:

  • The cutscenes, despite being well made and having pretty good voice acting, are not all that funny.
  • I don't like the fact they've brought back the necessity to reach a target score on each individual microgame for 100% completion. It gets tedious quickly, but I did it in WarioWare Inc so I guess I'll get there eventually in Gold. At least some of the missions introduce extra objectives for some individual microgames, which makes it a bit more interesting.

It hasn't dethroned Smooth Moves as my favourite game in the series, but I think I'll still be playing Gold on and off for the next few years, trying to complete all the missions and get high scores. Hopefully there'll be a Switch instalment at some point with all new microgames, but Gold will keep me busy until then. Well, that and replaying Smooth Moves.

Playing on a New3DSXL, with the very “right at the edge” A button, and constantly hammering the button (especially in the Door game) has practically obliterated my thumb. My hand's in agony!!!
This isn’t the game’s fault, of course..

I still find it really disappointing that none of the "whilst playing" music has the staying power of previous games.
Going into the "records" section, and playing all your favourite tunes that used to play in the background whilst playing the games.. that really makes it apparent.
This game has nothing .. NOTHING that stands out like that.
It has a little rap, but the rap ONLY happens during that one cutscene. It doesn't flow around the games.
Instead, it's that same droll repeating loop, over and over.
The GBA version coped better with this functionality. Why is it not here?!

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Although there’s nothing “wrong” here, there's definitely something missing.
It's not “Gold”.
It's just Gold..

@Jayenkai : I miss the songs from past games, Jimmy's aerobics song in D.I.Y., Mona Pizza from Twisted, and Jimmy Love from Game & Wario are series highlights.

@Silly_G I’ve unlocked Mona pizza in the records, and tomorrow hill, as well as a few others. I’m not sure what else is in there, but it’s a fairly competent selection of floor scrapings dumped uncaringly into a menu.

Most of the “Arcade” consists of “Look at the lovely picture. Read the text. Amazing. Feel the Gold.”
sigh

Unlocked (eg, randomly stumbled upon) the last of the microgames, today. I’m glad I didn’t hype that event up in my mind, because all that happened was it added a couple of achievements. No extra end credits. No big bonus. No colour change on the menu..
Just another menu item ticked off.

Gotta agree with all the posts praising Smooth Moves!

The way it used the Wiimote was genius, it was very cool to see polygonal microgames for the first time back then. The microgames were very memorable (the dancing one, star nose and the driving one, anyone?)

Really gotta turn my Wii on one of these days and give it a play. I haven't even unlocked all of the microgames after all this time, if i recall correctly!

@ReaderRagfish Yeah, Twisted is a fan favorite. The microgame selection is amazing, and it was the game with the most microgames in the series for a long time.

Twisted was my first WW game, I used to own a bootleg copy where you would use the D-Pad instead of motion controls. I picked it up in a flea market back then.
I only got a proper copy some time later.
