I've just received a larger SD card and I'm wondering how I upgrade. My 3DS is fairly new - all I've done is a system update, download some Nintendo Videos, and played Resident Evil. Nothing else apart from settings.
I've followed a guide which says to copy contents from a folder with a long file name into a similar one, but to be honest, I just feel like putting the new card in the system and starting a fresh. If I do this, will I lose anything? If so, what's the best way to do this?
The system's 2GB card seems to be in FAT format, but then I put the new card in, and then put the new card in my laptop, it said FAT32.
Its very simple. Just wipe all memory from the new card. Now copy the entire contents from the old card into a folder on your desktop labeled "3DS stuff" of something. Now put the new card into the computer and copy everything inside the "3DS stuff" folder into it. If you wanna start fresh....just put the new card into the 3DS and you're set. If your worried about losing anything by doing this.....you probably will since starting fresh means losing everything from before and...well...starting fresh.

Not actually sure what's on the old 2GB card. All I've done is update the system, download some videos on the Nintendo Video software, and just basic things like that.
I was going to copy all the contents, but this guide said I had to do a bit more saying I had to copy contents of a long file name into another folder which has a long file name?

Also, don't I have to format the new SD card in the 3DS before then putting it in my laptop to copy files across?

Nope. Not sure what the long name thing is about either. When I upgraded from 2GB to 32GB I did exactly what I said above and everything worked just fine.

Thanks. Did what you said and all fine.
What made you go to 32GB? Eeveryone I know says 2GB is plenty. I got a 16GB so it's futureproof but doubt I'll even hit 2GB.
Since Nintendo will be releasing games both digital and retail. Like NSMB2 will be 370 MBs so it's best to have a big SD card if you're looking to buy digital. Plus 32 is the max that can be use with the 3DS

Well for one, the 32GB was only like 20-something bucks on Amazon. I download A LOT of games plus I have well over 300 songs on the 3DS. Along with the fact that retail downloads and DLC are starting I figured I should be absolutely prepared. I've already soaked up like 6 or 7 gigs.
Tip if your looking to upgrade your SD Card: OfficeMax is currently selling 32GB Sandisk Class 4 cards for $20, compared to a regular price of $50. They also have a few other deals on Sandisk cards, but that was the one I jumped on: an 8 GB is around $9, and a 16GB is $12, and a Class 6 32GB is $25. I'm not 100% sure (yet) that they work well with 3DSs, but I'll report back once I'm done backing up and transferring my 3DS data to my 32 GB.
EDIT: Can't tell a difference between the new card and my old 8GB Lexar one, guess that means it's good!
Why would you put music on your 3DS though? It's a bit too big to use as an MP3 player.
Well if you carry your 3DS with you anyway like I and many others do, and bike ride and wanna listen to music while riding and searching for StreetPasses like me then it's really handy

I don't see the point in street pass in all honesty, but maybe I'm not educated properly about it.

I think (as we all know) that StreetPass works better in crowded cities like Tokyo or New York City. I'm still on the look-out for StreetPasses because I am really excited when I actually find someone who can give me a KI:U weapon, a new challenge in MK7, or even bullets in RE:Rev
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite
I like collecting the hats and puzzles in StreetPass when I move to Japan I should get a ton more StreetPasses
