My 3DS made it to Chatsworth today! Now I've got to wait and see how long it takes to fix. I'd be surprised if they don't send it back by Thursday.
It literally only takes them about an hour to fix. They have to run diagnostics to pinpoint the problem, then reset the specific abnormality. They shouldn't have to mess with anything having to do with the memory or processor.
You're games and memory will be fine.
My camera had green static, and they had to reset the camera app. This is an OS issue, which means it has nothing to do with anything being broken.
The brightness on your screen being past maximum brightness would be like overclocking a regular PC past it's recommended settings, except the 3DS seems to be 'overclocking' it's own settings somehow.
It's like finding a glitch in a game, but it affects how your console functions physically instead.
Okay, I now know more accurately what the problem is:
In Super Mario 64 DS, you can turn off the backlight. I thought the backlight might have gotten stuck on. I first thought of this when I saw the system restarting after closing a DSiWare game. The bottom screen could be seen to go out and come back on, but the top screen remains on the whole time. Thus, I turned off the backlight in SM64DS, and it remained faintly lit instead of turning off like the bottom screen. I noticed that the brightness setting does affect the top screen, but the brightness of (I think) the backlight prevents it from changing very much.
That's probably not the problem. My 3DS just got this problem today for no particular reason and I have not run any games with options like SM64DS.
I however am not within warranty anymore so I'm just going to buy a new one since the repairs will probably be high enough for me to just buy a new one. I will try the system reformat on the 3DS after I transfer my data to the new one and post back here if the reformat fixed the problem so if someone in the future has this problem they at least can know if that fixes the problem or not.
Yay! It came back today! And I'm happy to report that it works like a charm! It looks like they did exactly as @SCAR392 said. They also replaced my shoulder buttons and my top screen is also now scratch free! And all of my data is intact.
Hmm... I've just noticed that the colors on the top screen are slightly more vibrant than the bottom screen... I think they might have replaced the whole screen, and it's a slightly different version than it used to be. But I can deal with it. I only notice if I'm looking really closely.
However, it does say in the 3DS manual that slight variation in color between the screens is normal.
