No, he should wait. We should know what NX is before S&M release. It's best if he makes a fully informed decision.

@Ralizah S&M release? What's that?

But also, yes, I agree he should wait...I amended my post, I'll go back to the earlier one and amend it also.

Npd just came out for August. The 2ds is up 500 % year over year and the 3ds is up 84% year over year. Pokemon or/as and x&y also charted. I guess it's not to late for them. It's amazing what Pokemon go has done has done for the portable.

@Ralizah @faint Okay thanks, I thought it was hardware abbreviation...

...who knows, the NX is still four to five months out even if it's not pushed back. Not sure what the average time before release the reveals generally are these days...it's not information I have. :0/

@SuperPaperLuigi I've never seen a major new console that was revealed so close to its release date

@Meowpheel I'm not telling him he shouldn't...I'm just giving him the best advice I can to try and answer his question. :0/

Okay, thanks...I wonder what all the secrecy is about in that case. Maybe they're still not decided, maybe it'll be revealed right before release.

I love how everyone else is so sure that the NX is hybrid but there's no facs that point that way. And honestly I don't think that Nintendo is that smart. NX is going to be a home console just like every other time. Plus Nintendo has stated that the 3DS isn't going anywhere for a while. Plus Breath of Wild is a dual release for both the NX and Wii U which points to it being a home console, same with Just Dance , which has never come to a handheld ever. If you can wait until Black Friday, there might be good deals on a New 3DS. I know it's after Sun & Moon but if you want to save some money, it would be the best time to buy. Plus it gives you time to wait for the NX announcement.

Want: Harvest Moon: One World, Story of Seasons: Pioneering Town, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Finished the Alola Dex.
Now playing New Horizons, Wrath of White Witch and Sword

Even if it's discontinued I'm the future, a new user will have plenty to play. And it's still a supported console, and will be for at least a few more years.

It's kinda like telling someone wanting to experience the snes "don't get a SNES, they don't make new games for it!".

good post. for all we know, the new 3ds might integrateas a controller w the NX.

I'm totally hyped for NX and know it'll be a great system. But. Truth is it's gonna be more expensive than a 3DS, and it's gonna take a few years to build a big library.

3DS has at least another year of life in it, but more importantly, it has a robust backlog that can last you for many years to come, and the games are cheaper now that they're out.

You like RPG's? The 3DS is the best RPG machine in some time. And personally, my favorite platform ever made (and I own all 5 current gen consoles and handhelds, so it's not like I say this from lack of multi-platform experience).

Dragon Quest VII, Dragon Quest VIII, Fire Emblem Awakening, Fire Emblem Fates, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pokemon X/Y, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby, Pokemon Sun/Moon, Pokemon Super Mystery Dugeon, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Shin Megami Tensei IV Final, Bravely Default, Bravely Second, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Monster Hunter Generations, 7th Dragon III: Code VFD, Persona Q, Etrian Odyssey IV, Etrian Odyssey Untold 1 and 2, Stella Glow, Legend of Legacy, Little Battlers eXperience, Tales of the Abyss, Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance, Mario & Luigi Dream Team, Mario & Luigi Paper Jam, Final Fantasy Explorers... and that's making no mention of the slew of other classic gems that aren't RPG's.

I own both the New 3DS and New 3DS XL. I'll say this. I love the smaller New 3DS. It fits in my back pocket whereas the XL is just a tad too large, the faceplates are amazing, the smaller screen makes games look just a tad less pixelated... but... it has an issue where the top screen gets little micro scratches from the bottom plastic border around bottom screen from friction when closed. It's a small issue and took a year to happen over time for me, and can't notice really when system is on, but be aware nonetheless. Not saying it will happen to you, but it's a somewhat commonly reported problem with the smaller model. Also, the larger screen of the XL is unparalleled. It's just so much more luxurious. I prefer XL play most of the time. It's just that the other is more portable and stylish.

Also, DS backward compatibility is a huge plus. Incredible backlog there, including Chrono Trigger, Civilization Revolution, Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon, Advance Wars Days of Ruin, Advance Wars Dual Strike, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, Dragon Quesr Monsters: Joker 2, Dragon Quest IV, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy III and IV, Radiant Historia, Blue Dragon Plus, Blue Dragon Awakened Shadow, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts ReCoded, Luminous Arc 1 and 2, etc.

And if you love Pokemon, you'll love Dragon Quest Monsters. It's better- ask most fans of the series and they'll tell you how it's just the better game that, unfortunately, no one talks about. You'd have 2 of them from the DS.

So ya, I say look for one of those $174.99 sales (Target had one just a week ago) but if you're like screw it, I just wanna jump in now, it's worth every last red cent of the price tag. And just think, there's a Pikmin game releasing for it next year too!

Please let's not get so into detail about hacking, and specially let's not name any ways to do it.-Morpheel

Its never too late. Think about all the ds and 3ds games you can play. Just check which games might appeal to you and decide if its worth the investment. I havent regretted buying it and am amazed how much fun it provides.

Its not to late but just make sure you dont get screwed like i did......
Well kind of....
If you didnt know Nintendo is using 2 type of different screens most are TN panels and some are IPS.
What happened to me was the first one i bought was IPS but the screen and hinges were looser than normal (screen would slide without force) So i returned it this time no loose hinge but it has a TN i tried exchanging it again and it was again TN
So i gave up and im just keeping this
I also heard alot of bad stories about IPS(ghosting, bleeds, scanlines) on the new 3ds xl tho so maybe tn isnt so bad?

Thing is though we all pay the same price but some are getting more expansive screens no fair

@JaxonH you seem to know alot about nintendo lol kind of old news but do you know about tn or ips screens on 3ds?
Im kinda mad i got screwed over after having ips first but had to exchange it >< anyways im looking for a new game to buy after seeing your huge list what game would you recommand me? I love rpg and adventure and platformers typ games like mario, kirby, megaman, donkey kong, etc ...
i was thinking monster hunter 4 but i heard it has dark souls complexity? Not a fan of dark souls tbh

@Zeldalife89
I do, actually. Yes. I have IPS top/TN bottom. But some of my N3DS XL limited editions I display seem to be TN/TN like my FE Fates XL.

I love Monster Hunter. I can't not recommend that game. It's likened to Dark Souls because of its precision mechanics and importance on learning well timed dodges and utilizing i-frames for invincibility, and it's sheer depth, but it's also completely different. For one, no cheap deaths or overly difficult gameplay you can't overcome. You have to learn the game and get good at it, yes, but in Dark Souls you'll die, and die and die some more. And even when you're super skilled you still die. In MH, once you get skilled you'll never die. I mean, you might cart from time to time but rarely will you fail a quest. Not unless you refuse to update your weapon and armor on a somewhat regular basis ( that's the central mechanic of how you level up in the game- you don't gain stats or become stronger, you simply craft better armor and stronger weapons as you hunt more dangerous monsters.

It's seriously one of the most addicting games I've ever played. 600 hours in MH3U on Wii U, 400 hrs in MH4U and 400 in MH Generations. And you'll be glued to the game as well if you just give it a fair shake.

Life's too short, just buy it if you're thinking about it. I'm trying to join the Vita family myself, but they don't seem to be selling them anymore.

@JaxonH the thing is tho it seems like tn/tn is most common also idk if i should be happy or mad because i had a IPS top tn bottom but i had to exchange it cause the screen was really loose it would slide if i rotate the console so i exchanged it and got a goodnone in return but its TN top and bottom like your fates i cant return it again ive tried so im stuck with tn now but knowing i had ips bothers me since you have both is there rly that bigof differrnce? Or should i just be happy with ny tn?

Zeldalife89

@Zeldalife89
Honestly it's not a big deal. I mean ya, I'd try to get IPS if I had the choice but, you can't even tell unless you look at both side by side from really sharp angles. I mean, if you have to do all that just to tell it apart then, I wouldn't get all flustered over it.

It's one of those things where ya, if I had a choice, sure, but honestly you're gonna get better battery life from TN and I doubt you'd even be able to tell them apart without a side by side comparison, looking from really sharp side angles and scrutinizing to see if one flickers and becomes hard to read. Idk about you but I play looking straight on, and I have yet to tell the difference by playing.

I think IPS is definitely better but I wouldn't get all bent out of shape over it.

The thing that bothers me most is i had a ips screen but returned it and got tn in return sure the ils one had very loose screen i still kinda regret exchanging it..
If u were me and had to pick between a ips with loose screen hinges or perfect hinges but tn screen ? Like you said thr difference is small? I cant tell much difference betwren my old ips and my tn exept viewing angles but i cant get over knowing that i exchanged ips for tn
