Topic: This message is for TECH, and whoever else is on my 3DS friend list

Man, why isn't there a PM function on this forum? Anyway, my 3DS got stolen yesterday on Christmas Eve, so if you see me come online since yesterday, it IS NOT ME. It will be the thief! That is all.

Because honestly it's not needed. There are hundreds of other ways to get ahold of someone. Like Facebook, emails, Backloggery etc. A PM system would just create more work for the mods and PM boxes would just get filled with spam posts.

That is true, but for some friends I don't have access to their facebooks or emails or backloggery, etc, so a PM system would be most welcome in those instances. It's better to privately message someone about something well, private, instead of having to announce it in a thread in a public forum.

I used to think a PM system would be perfect for this site but changed my mind when recently the forums have been flooded with spam (sometimes even worse).

That's terrible, have you reported it to police and/or nintendo?

Report to nintendo, actually if it's stolen and resold to a gamestop or something nintendo may still be able to track it's serial code down. It has happened before.

I already filed a police report last night, and I hear Nintendo needs a copy of the report before they can do anything, so I have to wait until I hear back from the police first before calling them. I was thinking of calling/going to EB and letting them know (with the serial code) just in case someone does turn up to trade it in. Does that work too? I also lost my imported Digimon cell phone strap (it was attached to the 3DS) and my purple case (the 3DS was in it)

It was stolen in the lobby of my apartment building. There's no cameras there as far as I know, but the management office won't be open for the next few days so I can't find out. I never keep funds on my account, and the thief can't get into the Eshop without a p/w, and my CC info isn't saved on it, so at least I'm safe from that. He/she probably is having a very merry Christmas now, since he/she now has access to all my digital games.

Honestly news isn't needed - there are many other news sites out there. Honestly forums aren't needed, there are dozens of forum sites out there. Features are never 'needed' - that's not the reason for them being there or being absent. Yes, people could use other sites, but many people would actually enjoy the feature as a part of this site. For the record, Nintendolife staff have said a PM system isn't happening, so this doesn't really matter, but it gets annoying to have people continually jumping to a ridiculous reasoning whenever someone asks for a common functionality on forum/news sites.

Also, spam bots wouldn't bother messaging single players when we only get a few a month on the forums, even if they did, its like saying no one should have invented email because people will eventually get junk mail. There's no need to create a list of possible reasons every time someone asks this question. If the answer is that the site doesn't have the time or staff to make/sustain such a system, just let that be said.

And I hate it when people ask 100 times for the same thing after it has already been said 100 times before or when there are other options available.

To be fair, there's no FAQ where this is stated, and many of the times this question has been asked no mods have posted about it. There isn't exactly a great way for people to find out if they're new to the site.

Actually both Ant and TBD have both said that a PM system probably wont happen at least in the sense that most think a PM system works. The reason is due to spamming, bulling etc. The are looking into ways around this but so far they haven't found anything (at least that's my guess since nothing has been announced).

A PM system requires alot of work and moderation to maintain. (Even if they say mods can't see PMs that's bullcrap, they use that excuse so people don't know they're spying anyway. It's how they block advertising and reported trolls.)

It's not entirely necessary since there is little reason for us to use it, we have enough dedicated threads to say what we need to say. Mods are pretty soft and lighthearted around here too, they won't delete post and threads willy nilly like most forums without a very good reason, you can get away with messing around and requesting/asking certain things in those threads. Any other reason for a thread deleted is if it's down right asine or already made. (On other forums I guarentee all of your post would've been deleted because they talk about a PM system over the actual topic, tbh I suspect a lock sooner or later here)

The only time a PM system was needed was during code give aways where we didn't want codes publicly shown, like smash for example, but people used their emails anyway which worked fine.

We have enough files on the site as it is, a PM system is just another thing to fill up the servers.. the site only crashes a couple times a year as it is.

I wonder if Tech is ever going to see this post. This is why I like PMs, because it guarantees he will see it whenever he logs on. Anyway, he's probably celebrating the holidays right now.

You can mention him with @ and he'll {probably} be sent a notification to his email account.

I agree that PMs are needed. Not everyone has or used Backloggery and if everyone had the same mentality of "use your email lel" as Nintendolife, no site anywhere would use PMs.

PMs are a basic and valuable tool for forums. The only reason we don't have one is because of staff, and nothing else. If Spam was a problem, just include a system where they can be reported and users can be blocked. If moderating was a problem, get more moderators and make the PMs easily viewable to them. The real reason is that this site only has one coder, and unlike most sites, this place doesn't use a lot of third-party forum software, so all of that would take a lot of work. For better or for worse, that's the closest thing to a good reason there is.

So I can delete that system then. Did you get a new one?
