Topic: The best platform for INDIE-games...

I love indie games. Sure there's lots of trash but every now and then some indie game manages to hit my sweet spot. Gems like Dear Esther (this one devides people), Grimrock, Sprial Knight, Torchlight I + II, ... all of them would be great on 3DS. They aren't unfortunately. While i feel the best platform for indie games IS the PC I'd so wish its the 3DS. I do have a more than capable PC so I have actual access to those games whenever I want. It just doesn't feel right. I love handheld gaming, lying in bed or garden, relaxing, and I think its rather odd sitting in front of my high end pc and then playing games like Mutant Mudds (soon to be on steam, dont like it though) which just makes perfect sense on a handheld. There are many games on steam that are brilliant but just feel "too small" for a big PC and really scream "Put me on that damn 3DS i would look wonderfully on it, play perfectly and that thing is more than capable of running me".

So, what are your thoughts about this. I think we're getting by far not enough indie games on the 3DS and I hope that Nintendo and the indie developers themselves will push a bit more for it, it just purely is the perfect platform for smaller indie games. Discuss.

Indie means independent... it isn't always easy for a company with little to no backing to afford a 3DS dev kit! That is of course one reason why they thrive on the PC.

Or the licensing costs, or the costs of going through the classifications, or the costs involved in the sheer length of time it takes to go through Nintendo's approval process.

The iPhone and iPad have become the default platforms for indie games. Virtually free, over there.

Of course, that comes with it's own set of problems. Virtually free goes both ways; aka "Why would I spend money on it if I could get it free?"

I completely agree with OlympicCho on this one. Not only do they have to go through that, but they also can't do much to stimulate purchases through sales, or lower the price permanately, among even more things. Indie gaming is something that will always thrive where there are very little legal and monatary hoops to jump through.

Oh, and it's impossible for developers to release free games through the eShop. That makes it and possibly XBLA unique in that they're the only digital distribution platform that don't allow freemium gaming.

Freemium is another indie paradise.

rayword45

But Freemium is complete bull. Seriously. I don't want to get a game listed as free (not demo) when there's only 4 levels, and to get the other 96 you have to pay a buck each. Even games where the freemium isn't required is annoying (Order Up for example) because they deliberately set lame goals to make people die of the repetition (one reason the 3DS version is superior).

Ad-supported gaming (talking about banner ads) is perfectly fine in my opinion, but Nintendo doesn't seem to like that. Free gaming should be an option up to the developers, but I don't want a shop flooded with free games mostly made up of aimless play. I have my Smartphone for that (along with some actual good games)

I'd have to say steam personally; also wiiware in its early days was great for indie games so that's worth looking into; even if it was largely deserted later on due to sales and failure to update the service the quality of some of them is far higher than many seem to think.

Well Steam has most of the good games. I'd recommend Gamers Gate over it though - you actually get to access your games while you're offline. Crazy right?

Steam by far.

Why would that be special?

I'm playing Super Meat Boy (Steam V.) on my MacBook Pro without a internet connection as we speak.

Of all the ones I've tried, I prefer Steam, I get to play games offline just fine when I put it in offline mode and I get automatic updates which are a big plus as well. I haven't used it myself just yet, but I find it funny no one has mentioned Desura here. I've heard many good things about Desura which is supposed to be similar in some ways to Steam, but far more indie game focused.

Steam and XBLA are definitely the best I've seen. I suppose XBLA must have some kind of strict quality control, though. Most of the games on there are at least competent, and they really help out smaller developers from what I've heard. Maybe not the best for developers looking for a quick buck, but definitely great for developers with an actual vision.

While there have been many solid points raised - most of them quite obvious - no one of you actually touched the matter of the actual consumers end device about indie games, the system itself. All legal problems and distributional assets aside, does anyone of you feel like me - a bit weird playing some awesome pixel indie game on my high end pc if it would feel really at home on your 3ds? I know this is mostly wishful thinking and I am well aware of the hurdles the Nintendo eshop provides compared to the AppStore, still don't you think many of those indie games found on steam would be actually more enjoyable and "feel right" IF they WERE on 3ds?

I have no problems playing Indie games on PC, but on more than a few occasions, if it makes sense, I have connected my wireless 360 controller to play them. Sure, I'd like to see some more good games released on the eShop, but not at ridiculous eShop prices or the maddening eShop release time table.

Same here. I don't even own a 360, I bought a 360 controller solely to use for my PC. Some games, especially indie games, are a lot nicer with a controller.

You CAN play steam games offline. Before you take your laptop anywhere open steam and click "Go Offline" and while in that mode you can play your games offline.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

Im really thinking of getting one of the newer NETBOOKS (namely from asus), they're already sporting dualcore or even quadcore CPUS, up to 8 GB Ram and dedicated graphics, sorely for the purpose of playing indie games (and yes, wherever possible I also use the 360 controller) in the comfort of my bed or even on the go. It's like a quite expensive DS then!
