I have a lot of friends on the 3ds that I can't talk to and I really want to. I know what happened with the Nintendo letter box but there's other ways to deal with that problem other then just cancelling it completely. I would really appreciate it if someone can help me with that problem.
I like the idea but unfortunately it's open to abuse . Like the PSS system on Pokemon X/Y,there's always people that HAVE to make rude/offensive trainer/pokemon names or shout-out disgusting things T_T. Perhaps it's just to keep people safe from abuse that they do not allow this.
Looking for friendcodes for my 2DS. I'll add anyone who asks :D

I think Nintendo should stop trying to play nanny. It's not their responsibility to prevent kids from seeing objectionable content. It's the parents'. All the system would need is a parental control that allows to switch between "friends only" or "everyone."
On the other hand, blaming content providers for the kids being screwed up has been the calling card of bad parents for years and it affects the bottom line. Nintendo probably doesn't want the hassle of having their PR department apologize to neglectful parents that view TV and video games as a babysitting service.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

This, absolutely this!
It's sad enough that bad parenting is so easily discarded by blaming media, but what makes this worse is how "inappropriate" stuff from other users is only a problem on Nintendo platforms, while on Sony and Microsoft platforms, every kid in the world seems to know more about cursing than grammar, yet nobody cares.
With that said, I think some kind of quick notification system would help immensely with coordinating online parties and matchmaking. The one thing I'm fully against, though, is some kind of live voice chat - such features should be limited to in-game usage.

This. They're essentially alienating everyone over the age of 10 with their draconian policies. Sure, having the protections in place is fine in itself, but there needs to be ways to make the system much more open for teenage and adult players.
Nintendo needs to a page from sony for this, In addition to playing with my friends, I like to add people who are better at me on certain games(for competitive reasons) and most often these people usually get games similar to mine and we become friends in time(sorry for the rhyme). This friend code BS and lack of communication is one of the biggest turn offs for the 3ds's online multiplayer. Nintendo needs to fix/update this, especially with MH4U online multiplayer coming next year.
I agree with everyone here, Nintendo needs to stop playing "Nanny". Its not Nintendo's job to baby-sit kids. Yes they need to protect people's information & what not but Nintendo should know by now that there are other means of communication. So I don't see why Nintendo doesn't put in a communication system on the 3DS. Doesn't the Wii U have a communication system? I also blame the parents for not looking out for the kids. I hope by next-gen, Nintendo will learn and move on and actually make a communication system. But it would be nice if they did it now. Cause some of us have 99 friends on the 3DS.

All of you are right and there are even semples to support it: xbox live and psn let's everybody talk to everybody they want and nothing is wrong and if there is a problem you can block anyone you like, also every social web deals with that problem and does it right. and also it's really hard to play with others if you can't talk to them and say what you what or mean.
They absolutely need to stop playing nanny. Parental controls are fine, but removing any kind of communication system whatsoever is going a step too far and reduces the value of their services greatly.
Also considering there are numerous ways to communicate thanks to the internet, skype, email etc. Is it really that big of a deal? Honest question here. As for Nintendo, if they are scrutinized more than the other two as the family and kids company then they have to keep PR nightmares out of their hair. So they let you communicate with your own methods. As much as I liked swapnote, miiverse is way better at holding convos.
Disclaimer: I'm not a parent or a child gamer but I don't want to deal with rude people (of all ages and genders). I just want to play games.

So if i want to play a game with someone on my friends list I would need to go on the internet(lets face it if i add someone i don't know yet im not giving them my contact information) say lets play Smash, then if by chance hes on there too then he would have to reply(refresh page... check email) if he says yes then go back to my 3ds turn on my game and play, as opposed to PSN where you send a message {play smash} then load up my game and go(also you can chat while playing, making the experience way better, other then silently listening to the same music over and over again. which to me gets old and boring) Also this friend code garbage feels like a full time job, finding players with a good competition attitude/edge, most of the time you get people who add you just to have you on his friends list and not bother with you anymore. It defeats the purpose of having an online community for the 3ds, and as for the miiverse, friend codes aren't allowed i asked and they said go to online blogs like this one. and most of the time its kids bragging about how the beat this and that and drawings, its not a 3ds community its a play ground for kids and monitored strictly by nintendo. If nintendo wants online gaming for the 3ds they need to take tips from the companies who have experience in it.
Wait, they got rid of Swap Notes!!? I didn't even notice! I do actually use it from time to time. Nintendo has traditionally been conservative when it's come down to anything that would offend or influence children, but come on.
