Topic: The 3DS Design/OS Complaint Thread

It's some time we use our 3DS now and i think a thread like this is needed.

This thread is not about flaming but about constructive criticism about the design, the OS limits and more.

Starting with my complains:

  • Only 3 Wireless Connection Allowed: I always need to delete other connections when i need to connect to a new network, it's a pretty annoying limit.
  • SwapNote multiple selection & delete: Fixed with a swapnote update

More to come as i think of...

the lack of html5 support, which prevents users for accessing Youtube's 3D channel which would be a draw for the console.

Region locking of the fricking chargers, that's the most ridiculous thing ever to do for a handheld.....

The age checks on the eshop EVERY SINGLE TIME you want to see M rated content even within the same session, this is part of the wider lack of account system problem, since you don't have a user profile that allows to set your birth date once and the system remember it every time you logging it, but if they are not fixing that (and they should fix that ASAP) they could at least offer the option to disable age checks in the parental control settings....

Blocks...... I don't get the point of blocks, what's the problem with describing data size using the units everyone understands, I don't have a Wii U but I've heard Wii U uses MB and GB instead of blocks, why cannot they do the same thing for the 3DS...

those are the main ones I can think of right now

I would have listed it as a problem as well but has been discussed so much.

The whole stuff about the lack of an account system and having the digital content tied to the console is really a drawback, and i think that's the reason why a lot of (informed) people don't buy DDs retail titles on 3DS and WiiU.

The 3DS web browser sucks. Plain and simple.

The original 3DS design is truly beautiful in my opinion, but the corners can carve into my palms during long bedtime sessions.

I know. I experienced hand dizziness on both PSVita and 3DS during long sessions, more on the former than the latter and seems strange because PSVita looks like being a bit more ergonomical.

I actually agree with everything in this thread so far(besides post 4- web browser is definetly missing a lot of content, but I like the design of it too much to hate it).

It irks me that you can only have one tab on the Internet browser, as well. I often use many tabs at once and limiting to just one tab is terribawfully painturous.

Something else very annoying is that both 3DSes have lots of grooves that are good at attracting gunk. If I play for too long my hands will get a bit of sweat... Bam, my XL is messy and overly grippy again. This was actually a major factor of me upgrading to an XL from my aqua blue console on the launch date, the original 3DS just got way too messy all the time. The XL is certainly much better with this problem and easier to clean, but it's still unfortunately common.

Lastly, 3DS camera... It's good enough, and the 3D is awesome. But I miss all the extra modes from DSi Camera. I don't take photos much but I loved just playing around on DSi camera and I know that I would use 3DS camera a heck of a lot more if it had the same features.

I have to say the thumbstick kind of sucks. It's fine when your hands are dry but sweat even the tiniest bit and everything feels like a Mario Ice level. I'd like it if the next hardware revision had some kind of grooves or a better rubberized surface, or at least a rubberized sticker to solve the problem on my current 3DS.

The eShop is still clunky. Not that there's a whole lot of quality content on there anyway, but I feel like it could be much easier to navigate.

I feel your pain...

One other thing i got in mind is the 100 friend limit and how the friends can't be grouped in a folder-like manner. Let's say NintendoLife/University/Work.

I am surprised that no one mentioned the lack of a second circle pad.

That's my only complaint. 3dsxl should've had one built in. Otherwise, since the update adding folders, there's generally nothing worth complaining about for the xl.

There are, however, the lines on the top screen every time you close the standard 3ds.

@Shambo But if Nintendo included a second circle pad into the 3DSXL model, developers would be using that second circle pad for games far more, meaning that 3DS owners would either have to upgrade to a 3DSXL or buy a CPP.

Not to mention it would confuse consumers like crazy, look at how much confusion they went through at launch of the system. If Nintendo released the 3DSXL with the second circle pad, consumers might have thought of it as the next generation system rather than a redesign.

As for the topic at hand, I really don't have too many complaints with the console, except for the fact that dirt and gunk can hide in so many parts of the body, it's quite disgusting. Especially under and around the rim of the touchscreen. Just ewww...

Swapnote is an app, not the OS.

Agreed, they should have included it in the first design, making a SKU with a second stick at this point would create more problems than solutions.

The CCP is not a good solution also because it is an add-on. Developers don't lose time over add-ons with a lowsy install base.

SwapNote was updated a few months ago to allow this feature.

I see you're in Italy though, so I assume you have Letter Box, which I don't believe has been updated yet.

Thanks, good to know...
Did they update it when they made the "different color for different pages" thing?

Yes. Here's a full list of things that went into that update:

We got that update ages ago, I think we got it the same time as NA.

The biggest complaint I have (which I noticed when playing animal crossing) are the clicky nature of the buttons and how they don't work well when you try a different amount of pressure when pressing the buttons. Example: I'm trying to sneak up on a bug so I hold down the A button but sometimes I worry if I'm pushing down too hard so I try to remove some of the pressure off my fingers and the button just pops right up and my character ends up swinging the net and my bug escapes. I just don't like that the buttons don't respond well to the amount of pressure u add to them.
