Topic: Take League of Extraordinary Gentleman, throw in H.P. Lovecraft, add a heaping helping of Freedom Force, X-Com, and Valkyria Chronicles, and what do you have?

Codename S.T.E.A.M., or Lincoln vs. the Aliens in it's original Japanese name. This game is getting a bum rap, to be honest with you.

Influenced by the Silver Age of comics, and Jack Kirby, it brings to bear these other comic book influences: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (in that each hero is a famous character from various novels, such as the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz, and the main character Henry Fleming from The Red Badge of Courage - how awesome is that?!), Freedom Force (this game is dripping with Silver Age style, and is amazing to boot), and some people often mention Bruce Timm, but really his influence goes back to Jack Kirby, really...so, it's kinda repetitive to say him, but I guess he is the most famous modern artist to ape his style. Don't get me wrong, I do love Timm's style, though. How can you say, knowing all of this, that you think this game is horrible? The art style is a total throwback, and is truly awesome.

Then you have Valkyria Chronicles gameplay. But, really it's got a huge influence from X-Com. I mean, two of the best turn based strategy games to come along in the past 10 years, and you are telling me you don't like this game?

And then you have the whole reason Abraham Lincoln gathered these guys together...aliens influenced by the works of the legendary H.P. Lovecraft:

Ok, it's time to give this game it's due. It looks amazing, and I can't wait until March 13th, when it releases. Day One, and I don't do that very often.

It might interest you, but these factors might not catch the attention of others. I'm personally excited for it, but not exactly because of its influences. I just liked the concept, and thought it looked really fun. Everyone has their own interests and opinions, and they might not match up with yours.

The game does look amazing. I'll probably end up DLing it the day it releases.

Meh, the gameplay doesn't really interest me. It looks like a fairly generic hybrid TPS/RPG.

You're saying that as if that's a regular thing and the 3 that actually exist aren't amaziballs. Seek help.

It doesn't matter that it's not a regular thing. The mix of those two genres doesn't provide anything interesting.

Putting generic FPS elements together with generic RPG elements doesn't automatically make the combined gameplay interesting. There has to be something new that plays off both styles.

In other words, the game is basically the sum of two generic parts, that's why it's not interesting.

I'm not really seeing the Lovecraftian aspects so far, especially when comparing his creations to aliens from outer space... but the rest is somewhat fitting.

@Bolt_Strike It's your thing that the game doesn't interest you, but you might wanna note that it's more of a turn-based action game, since shooting is only one of multiple ways to approach a target. In addition, there are several position-based strategies that must be set up precisely to work well.
Or, to keep it short: the blend of RPG, shooter, and action elements stabilizes each others theoretical flaws, and adds multiple layers of input to the mix. None of the genre parts are used separately, but in conjunction with each other.

I see it more of a mix of Third-Person Shooting and Turn-Based Strategy and Role-Player mechanics. I am personally excited about the game.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

A lot of games mix role playing and turn based strategy, though.

Thanks for pointing that out, though, it's not an FPS.

Eh, I don't think the steam gauge or the position mechanics really does much though. Maybe if they did something more than that with the steam, I'd be interested, but as is it doesn't really stand out gameplay wise.

It stands out to me. Then again, I've played the only 2 games (not 3, I checked) that it's actually similar to, and they're two of the most interesting games of the last generation. I can understand if it's "not your thing", but I don't think you even understand what "thing" it is...

The comic book art bugs me about this game as it doesn't look like comic book art but rather anime trying to be comic booky, still I'm holding judgement for the final product.

There is no anime influence, and if you don't see the similarity in style between all four of the pictures I just posted...you need to get your eyes checked.

And lol @ the FPS remarks.

Actually, visually it feels like Freedom Force crossed with the recent Jojo Anime. It's hard to find some good pictures to show what I mean, though. Granted, Jojo had a surprising amount of western influences, so maybe that's where I get that...

I never said there's an anime influence, I said it reminds me of when anime tries to imitate comics rathern than being it's own things. Comic book infleunce wise I say it reminds me more of Cliff Chiang than Kibry or Timm.

Never played X-COM, but Valkyria Chronicles was both a bland TPS and a bland SRPG. As two separate parts, it would have been two very mediocre games. Nobody can tell me that a game that was just the shooter aspect of VC would have been interesting at all. But it's all in the way the two parts came together. The whole is much, much greater than the sum of its parts. It's one of the best and most under-appreciated games to come out last gen.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

I don't mean to be rude...but have you actually watched any gameplay footage of this or read any previews?? It's actually a 3rd person, turn-based TACTICAL game, inspired by the likes of X-Com and Valkyrie Chronicles. There is nothing at all that's generic about it, imo.

I think the game looks fantastic, it has a great pedigree behind it (Intelligent Systems), and I think people should give it a chance. There aren't nearly enough turn-based tactics games being made these days, and this one shows a lot of promise..

Currently playing: Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Legend of Zelda: ALBW.

Cliff Chiang is a great artist, but has a few different styles over the years. I'd say the first style, to me, has a huge Ron Lim influence...maybe even some Mark Bagley, and Mike Mignola. The second is Bruce Timm, big time. And lastly, Adam Hughes. He's an amazing artist, though. Always was so jealous of the guys who have super clean lines, tight styles, and minimal...yet so detailed.

And lastly: http://media.tumblr.com/75102acdaf995c73e776b9d44f13842d/tumb...

All that being said, I see nothing at all that looks like him. I pointed out the influences...and the only thing in common we posted would be Bruce Timm.
